For the past month, Nicole had walked through the halls of her high school with fear, shame and an increasing sense of paranoia. Every pair of eyes seemed to linger on her too long, every face seemed to wear an expression of disgust or pity. Her best friend, Sara, tried to tell her that it was all in her head. Nobody else knew, not yet, at least. She'd been wearing more loose-fitting jeans, and big, flowing tops. These things were usually enough to conceal her four-month bump. Her belly was only slightly swollen now, but Nicole knew it would only get worse from here, and then it would be impossible to pass her pregnancy off as being bloated, or gaining a few pounds. Not to mention, she'd been eating far more than she usually did, and her boobs had definitely gotten bigger; it would only be a matter of time until people put two and two together and figured out her not-so-little secret. (As if the rumors hadn't started already.) She'd passed the point of no return. A week or two from now, she would have to start telling the truth when her peers asked her what was going on. The mere idea of it scared her so much that she didn't even want to think about it.
After a quick stop at her locker, Nicole walked out the front doors of the school, trying her best to blend in with the sea of other students anxious to go home for the day. Nicole wasn't exactly excited to go home. Since her parents had kicked her out, she'd been living with her boyfriend. She loved him, and she knew she'd love their baby when it came...but he wasn't always good to her. Sara was the only person who had really witnessed it, since her boyfriend was out of high school and Nicole would never make a point of bringing him around a lot. Sara told her again and again that they needed to break up, but Nicole had never listened; and it wasn't as if she could break up with him now, not when he was the father of her unborn child. Sara just didn't understand. There were things she didn't know, things that Nicole had never told anybody...
Nicole saw her boyfriend's car pull up to the curb and rushed forward to get in. Once she was sitting in the passenger's seat, she breathed a tiny sigh of relief. She'd been sucking in her stomach all day, and it felt good to be able to act normally. She gave her boyfriend a kiss on the cheek, then settled back into the seat and buckled her seatbelt. "How was your day, baby?" she asked. She was always sweet and kind to him, in hopes that it would make the rest of the day a little more bearable. Somehow, though, he always found something to punish her for. "I'm hungry," she remarked, patting her belly. "Can we stop and get something to eat? I'm craving...tacos. With extra tomatoes." She laughed a little.
