In a somewhat small house located in a poor area, a family of four live together. The family has some problems but they still love each other and though they are not rich ,at all, they share a closeness with each other that most families never know. Karen, the younger daughter is 15 years old, only a week shy of 16. Her older brother, Jace, is 20 years old, he is a schizophrenic, sociopath with multiple personalities. The mother, Kate, is 40 years old and has been fighting cancer for some time, she is currently staying home under hospice. The father, David, is 42 years old.
Karen always does very well in school, she doesn't have many friends at school. She is mature for her age, both physically and mentally and throughout her life she has seen enough to know what the typical man is after. She even goes so far as to get dressed in her closet, not because her body is unattractive, it's the opposite, but because she is that paranoid about men, the upside to this is that she's kept herself out of trouble. Karen brushes her teeth, walks into her mothers bedroom and kisses her mom before going to bed, they are all fairly sure that she will be dead soon and the family is a wreck emotionally, except for Jace, who doesn't say much and stays in his room playing mmos on the computer, but tonight, he too walks into his mother's bedroom when Karen does, he holds Kates hand and without a word says goodbye and leaves. Karen follows Jace into his room "why of all nights, tonight, do you choose to do something like that" and Jace retorts "I really feel like tonight is the night".
That night, Kate suffered a heart attack while she slept, without much waking pain she had died. Karen stays in her room crying since 3AM when the ambulance came in and woke her and Jace. Hours later, Karen has decided not to go to school today, David can't blame her and doesn't say a word about it. Jace enters Karen's room without knocking, without a tear in his eyes he silently offers an embrace to his sister. Though this is extremely odd behavior for Jace, Karen accepts the offer and while crying she says "I love you".
