The ooc thread for the game. Feel free to post questions and comments. I will need player input to help concoct the plot.

Jotting down Approach Scores here. Will come up with a full sheet in a bit.

Edit--Another note, I'm having difficulty understanding Aspects. Early on they were described as a character background piece but on page 14 they have a mechanical effect. Do you have an abbreviated explanation?
Edit--Careful and Clever have been switched to +3/+2 from +2/+3 after writing my character background.

If I delve into the same sorta looking at Statistics for a concept like this, pondering on the rest with no knowledge of the world really. I do know my last character in the RPG game I play weekly I touched upon a suave, brilliant former noble turn mercenary so switching it up sounds grand. Will need to look upon this more. Below are options depending on the makeup of the crew. Need to broaden him out, thus far his Trouble aspect is being a Hedonist which trust me...causes all the trouble and an occasional blessing.

Adelheid

A tall and stocky barrel-chested bear of a man, with a grizzled flat top and a constant 5 o' clock shadow on his blocky face. Stroheim lives for technology. His bulky prosthetics were not installed upon losing his limbs, rather he deliberately designed his prosthetics and amputated himself to install his new mechanical arm, leg, and front pelvis. He believes technology and science to be man's ultimate tool and means of progression. His prosthetic limbs have a shell of anodized titanium, for a deliberate rainbow sheen, which contrast against his black shirt and pants, appropriately torn so the prosthetic limbs fit through the holes they're supposed to. Stroheim loves to show off his superior strength and jumping ability, especially for the ladies, which he also packs a special surprise for. Naturally muscular body from constant use of having heavy metal limbs. Has to watch his step, he's heavy enough he could fall through a bad floor. Loud, boisterous, and loves to make a good scene, but can get hot headed and be one to try and 1-up the other guy.

High Concept: The Bionic Shipwright
Trouble: "Self-centric show-off McMan" Look at mah bionic mahcles.
Aspect: "Machines are for men, magic is for dweebs" (Highly proficient with technology/engineering, but knows jack shit when it comes to magic.)
Aspect: "Man or Machine?" Prosthetic right leg, left arm, and penis (yes really, complete with a vibration motor installed, sadly, he gets to feel nothing.) Very powerful, but also heavy, slow, and clunky.
Aspect: "Mr. Fix It" Well, when it comes to practical problems. Social problems and philosophical conundrums... not so much.
Aspect: "Up Close and Personal" Loves a good brawl, hates shootouts and magic.

Stunt: "Bionic Gorilla" Can use his prosthetics for impressive, showy feats of brute force.

Careful: 1
Clever: 2
Flashy: 3
Forceful: 2
Quick: 1
Sneaky: 0

You need your High Concept to describe it as it refers to him. For example Voltair has "Feline Captain of Cirrus Skimmer". That one phrase describes who she is and what she does. "The Bionic Shipwright" Should be Adelheid's high concept. That says who and what he is in a nutshell. Other then that, the character is approved.

Alright, edited for rectification.

Name: Shiho H. Ettaran

Background--
Though she doesn't have very many memories of this time, Shiho's early years under the name of another family were spent in a large library. Her dad was a researcher, and her mom was a technician working on polishing skyship technology, Shiho's time there was truly one of wonder more than sadness - as while they spent their lives inside the royal library of [Non-canon technically advanced country] to focus on their research (with the occasional acquiring of a room from the hotel across the street) their cared about their daughter greatly, even if she had gotten lost in the building's elaborate structure easily twice over how many times you could count on two hand. She gained a liking to the written craft here, though by contrast she spoke rather more quietly compared to the other children.

In the month after her fourth birthday, a great sickness spread over the land. Her parents had Shiho stay with some family friends, the Ettaran's, with a lone island to the south, while they worked on a cure. Two weeks later, they were dead. The survivors could not rebuild. The country lie in ruin. It is beyond repair. Following this, the Ettaran's stored away what copies of research Shiho's father had sent them, and officially adopted Shiho into their family. It was not a smooth transition. Lots of screaming and crying was involved.

After this point, Shiho's family consisted of a 'father', a 'mother', and an 'older brother.' They had lots of money. She spent the most of the next five years locking herself in her room and getting her 'parents' to order her books from far-off lands. They were familiar to her. Her older brother was mean, but they managed to ignore each other most of the time. Her father was an international stockbroker who worked under a large company based in Valua. She has a hard time remembering what her mother did.

By the time she was fourteen, she began looking into some research elements she remembered from her time with dad. She started reading into concepts more attuned to someone at least a decade older. A year later, she managed to build a miniature skyship operated by remote control from scraps she found in the mansion basement. She was happy until it broke. The next month she saved a life when a business partner had a heart attack during a visit. He still died later that year, but she wanted to be proud of something. Her relationship with her 'family' got a little better. They still hated each other, but they learned to respect that at least. Her brother's friends bothered her a little too much, so she took a trip to a library and picked up a book on how to use a knife. Shiho started going out to practice every Saturday night, until her father noticed she was out often and she decided to lock herself in her room again.

Once, at sixteen, she asked for her father's help getting into a prestigious school. She wanted to find somewhere she felt safe. Being with others was painful. She might as well have just been there to be played with. She had meltdowns and broke into tears in the bathroom every other week. She left after her first semester. Father wasn't nice after that happened. Brother wouldn't fucking shut up about it, either. "I stomped on one of Brother's spare glasses after that because I was angry. There was a fight after that. He ended up with a black eye and I broke my arm. I remember wishing I had brought the knife. A week later, I was a little glad I had forgotten it."

...Things started getting better after that. She met a nice man once while shopping for medical supplies and spare gears. That birthday, when she turned 18, was the first time someone outside her family had joined her for one. He spent that night in her room. She said she loved him next week, and they haven't met since. She isn't sure if she regrets it or not. She can't even remember his name these days.

At twenty, she asked 'father' for her parents' old research papers. They were covered in dust, but still readable. Well, I say that, but her dad's handwriting was horrendous. Shiho was the only one in the whole house who could make heads or tails of it. There was a note on page 53 about dad taking everyone to an amusement park once this was all finished. Shiho cried herself to sleep that night. She spent the next few years working on iterating her mom's skyship blueprints and reading up on biology with a boost from her father's blueprints. There was a lot there that could serve as details for more than just a single cure. Notes of wild dreams and the applications her dad had written about how he could change the world were scribbled in nearly all the margins. He said he was sad so many people had to die in order to find an opportunity to make the world a better place.

"On the night mom died, dad wrote that he's sorry he wouldn't be able to be with me anymore. That was the last entry in the papers. I think he would be happy knowing I could read that."

In the week after she turned 24, there was a large fire. She blacked out after inhaling too much smoke, and it took her a month to finally wake back up. Older brother had a friend who died. He was out for the funeral when she woke up.

The papers 'survived', under one description or another. They were sold off to pay for the repairs. A rather extravagant Valuan shop that deals in things of historic and scientific value. Father's market shares hadn't been doing well lately. They were already low on money as-is. By the time the parents could ask to buy them back, they had already been sold to a buyer. The shop didn't keep records of who. They had a lot of customers who would have rathered stay anonymous.

She spent the rest of the day fixing up older brother's old glasses from the fight some years ago. It hadn't mattered if they didn't fit anymore. She cut her finger on the glass once and needed a bandage.

She gave them to brother when he returned from the funeral. There were still tears on his face. Shiho told everyone she was sorry she couldn't learn to be a family with them. Father said that dad would be happy with who she's become anyway.

That night, Shiho set off on a travel ship to a far-off country to find the papers. She wanted to go to Valua, but father had told her it was dangerous alone, even if he respected Shiho's wish that this was her own goal to solve. She took a random ticket and decided to start her search wherever it landed her.

Depending on what the first post is like, Shiho probably meets the rest of the party on a transportation ship somewhere on her journey.

Background's finished, so I'll put this up and post the rest of the sheet as I work through it.

Description: Shiho, 24 years old, is a young woman who takes pride in her intellect, or less commonly, her wit. She'd like to think she's reached a fair level of emotional maturity over the years, and generally manages to keep herself at least a bit cheerful out of sheer willpower. She's about the same height as most men her age, if perhaps shorter by the size of an eyeball, with bright brown hair that reaches about halfway down her neck, and eyes with a dim green hue like small emeralds. Her facial structure can usually be recognized as a foreigner, depending on where her travels take her, but it oftentimes takes someone more well-versed in the subject to point out her exact lineage.

Her body is fairly well-rounded, with breasts just slightly above average compared to others, and she sees her waist and her hips as fairly appealing though not exaggerated to the point of being bothersome. She has a preference for long skirts that reach below her knees as a minimum, and her underwear choices are generally more elegant without being outright chosen for sexual reasons or anything that might be cumbersome to move around in. Makeup is usually expensive or otherwise a bother for daily use and reserved for special occasions. She keeps a bag strapped to her waist for money, documents and the occasional bottle of water, whereas the upper rim of her skirt is a suitable place to hold her knife. In the events that her knife needs to be more easily hidden she can strap it to her thigh, but she doesn't like it too much as it means she needs a shorter skirt in order to pull it out.

High Concept: Searcher of Lost Texts. [Shiho searches for her parents' lost documents that were sold off after the fire. Her experience with written craft in-general means she has a much easier time understanding and researching written language - this is expanded to simple understanding of text in unknown languages as well with some careful observation - but by contrast she has much more difficulty understanding the vocal language of strangers. She also knows her parents' handwriting well enough to recognize it.]

Trouble: A Broken Spirit. [Shiho has difficulty staying calm or otherwise not-panicking under heavily stressful situations(generally in the same zone as hostiles), affecting her efficiency in noncombat actions.]

Aspect 1: Calm Hands and a Healthy Mind. [Shiho's practice in her parents craft, usually relating to medicine and engineering, make her much more skilled at making delicate hand movements and observation of how something works.]

Aspect 2: A Faint Whisper. [Shiho's internally-focused demeanor and general avoidance of crowds makes her much better at staying quiet or otherwise moving unnoticed. On the other hand, she doesn't deal well with crowds and being the center of attention.]

Aspect 3: Nimble and balanced. [Her training with a knife, while she's not strong enough to make her stab stuff harder, has given her improved dexterity with her body. She has an easier time moving swiftly and otherwise staying balanced without falling over.]

That's quite a bit. Should definitely have a bookworm attribute of some sort. Would definitely come in handy for "Create an Advantage," action where if you're able to read a book or something you can acquire a new aspect from it. Or even just have "bookworm" in your "high concept" aspect

Well let us kick this sucker off. But before start you three got to come up with a story how you all know each other and what you want to do. If you got nothing I'll unite you all through a common foe.

/ponders for a moment

Shiho is likely trying to do some research on where the papers might be. I'll leave the answer to that up to you - if she succeeds too early then it was too easy, but it should be resolved eventually. I'd say the story starts either on a transport between islands, a library of some description where Shiho is doing some research on the local geography, or maybe a bar where she's either staying in the attic overhead or speaking to someone who might have a lead.

I'd say my character has been with Gunnar for several years now, and the two are somewhat of a duo of trouble and mayhem where they go. Why we picked up Shiho, I dunno. Really the only plausible explanation from both our (meaning Adelheid and Gunnar's) standpoint would be with the intent of banging her, but that sounds like a cruddy way to start things off, so I don't quite know yet. Really that seems to be the hardest part, where does Shiho fit in the trio? 'Cause Adelheid and Gunnar both sound close enough that they would run together to begin with.

Well, you could have been without a mechanic or something. Or we could have a side-character who drags me on.

Really that seems to be the hardest part, where does Shiho fit in the trio? 'Cause Adelheid and Gunnar both sound close enough that they would run together to begin with.

Well, you could have been without a mechanic or something. Or we could have a side-character who drags me on.
I'm the shipwright though. I am the mechanic. That's what a shipwright would be. Plus I literally installed artificial limbs just cause. Mechanics are my guys bread and butter.

Owning her a favor could definitely be befitting. As Color joked in the chat I embrace the Viking side of things so Shiho just might have secrets to ruins with an awesome treasure and totally he enough of a hot dog to let the libido be a reason too. Probably be a hilarious feat having someone not of his rowdy demeanor. Her sense could be useful.

Also I just saw this thread again .... Was my character alright barring the fact need to add a stunt?

Hey guys! So sorry that I've been pretty much incapacitated all weekend, and haven't been around. At any rate, I'm almost finished with my character, and I wanted to ask a systematic question: Are aspects something we make up? Or is there a pre-determined list somewhere we have to choose from?

Okay, so I've submitted my character on the profiles page. :) Hopefully he looks okay. Let me know if I've screwed something up, as this is the first time I've used the FATE accelerated system, and wouldn't be surprised if I misunderstood character creation. (I can be dumb sometimes)

Where does he fit in? Maybe he was injured while robbing a cargo ship recently, and winds up seeking medical attention wherever Shiho is. Perhaps if you three have made plans to search some nearby secret ruins, Tempest can offer himself up as a guide, and passage on his small ship as payment for treating his wounds. Just an idea, though.

Read all of Rauk's character data for Tempest. The first thing that comes to mine is him being a Blue Rogue, he'd be more inclined to be with Shiho in some manner helping her out. Especially concerning finding cures for illnesses or something perhaps. I dunno. Sanoci as a captain jives with more of a Black Pirate rather than a Blue Rogue like Tempest. So why they'd be with Sanoci's character Gunnar seems a bit up in the air. Though his knowledge of Valuan ships and procedures, having served on them for quite some time, could provide ample reason for us to take him on. The question would come to what would happen if Gunnar decided to attack an unarmed vessel or merchant ship rather than a Valuan one. Then again, maybe Gunnar would only be interested in attacking high-value Valuan ships for quality bounty anyhow.

I think perhaps a start similar to this might work out: Gunnar has fallen ill with some sort of sickness that he can't find treatment for. So has Tempest. Maybe my character does or doesn't, he's not captain so it's not priority. Perhaps even Adelheid is the one that brings his sick captain to Shiho in the first place. Anyways, Shiho, without having to actually do it, winds up nursing both of them to health. Gunnar is moved to owe Shiho a favor, while also probably trying to get in her pants, and grants her aid in her quest. Tempest, sensing Gunnar's lack of... noble character, feels inclined to travel with Shiho to make sure nothing bad happens to her, and that her quest is also found out. The basic goal of the game would be to seek whatever Shiho's character is looking for, seeing as she's the only one who has put forth a clear-cut goal with her character. Tempest is along to balance out Gunnar and keep things civilized. He's allowed on the ship in exchange for giving valuable data concerning a Valuan vessel, which at some point we raid in our story, even if it's not the main overall goal. Thus Tempest rightfully earns his spot to stay on Gunnar's ship for the time being. At the same time, since Tempest owns his own ship, he is not entirely beholden to Gunnar, having his own means and way of life, so he can feel free to act against Gunnar's orders if he so feels like it. Drama arises however it shall in the game. What does everyone think?

Cannot necessarily say I like the idea of having an illness be the factor for becoming comrades but its a start. Based on Gunnar's mentality an unarmed say Merchant ship would need to be packing awesome wealth to waste his time, preferring some competition vs slaughtering civilians. Rauk proposed something like robbing his vessel, could not see many results that doesn't result in attempted murder on his behalf. Zeth brought the idea of a common foe as a plausible method. Easily argue Tempest knows of the ways to certain ruins thanks to time in the Armada with Shiho possessing the proper lore on bypassing traps and whatnot.

Gunnar isn't some kill happy psychopath, but the things in life that pleases him will be options. On cases of those targets; he wouldn't lethally attack passengers unless they are shooting lead at him. Again the concept is Boisterous Sky Captain so the prospect of a good fight is a motivator.

I don't see Tempest plotting to attack Gunnar's ship, really. His plundering is pretty much focused on valua trade ships/military patrols only. Which is convenient anyway, seeing as how they most commonly have the best loot (if staying true to the game, that is). They're a very rich and powerful entity. Nasr on the other hand, are essentially egyptans with flying ships. They have some good stuff too, but Tempest doesn't have beef with them.

I think a good way for Tempest to join the crew would be through getting his own ship destroyed somehow. Perhaps Shiho is with him for starters, and they get ambushed by super insane/murderous black pirates on their way to wherever he's taking her, and gunned down. With The Houston quickly plummeting into deep sky, they escape via a lifeboat/escape pod. Just an idea.

Also, what if this object Shiho is looking for hidden in these ruins ends up being one of the 6 moon crystals? (whether the character knows it or not) Sort of like the game, Valua could be plotting to gain control of them, in order to control the 6 Gigas', and thus rule all of Arcadia with an iron fist. They are essentially priceless, which would attract any treasure hunting type, I'm sure. But very dangerous, as whomever controls a moon crystal is in control of its respective Gigas. In the world of Arcadia though, this isn't exactly common knowledge. Most common people don't even know that they exist.

Basically, 'moon stones' are what people in Arcadia use to fuel ships with. They rain down from the 6 moons (Red, blue, green, yellow, and silver). There are six moon 'CRYSTALS' which are essentially moon stones on crack and used to control the gigas'. Extremely highly concentrated energy. The Gigas are ginormous monsters the size of a city that have legendary abilities having to do with their respective elemental power. Their only purpose really, is to destroy everything as a "reset button" type deal. But that can all be explained later if needed.

Each moon represents an element.
Red is for fire, and performance enhancing magic
Blue is wind and water.
Green has some negative status effect type stuff, as well as healing.
Yellow is lightning.
Purple = Ice
Silver is about void magic. Curing status effects... instant death spells, etc.
