"Now, now!" The man at my section shouts with excitement. He throws two dice into a cup, shaking it into a blur before smashing it down onto the polished table.
"Evens!" I put down half the money I have left on my wager. It's far less than what I came here with. The casino is bustling with tension as money changes hands with what may as well be the flip of a coin.
The setting is New York City, 1967, in a wealthy casino on the 32nd floor of a large hotel building. If you look out the windows, at least three fully-grown men in height, you would see the bustling lights of the city far below. The room smells of alcohol and tears, and you can't even get to the bar from here anyway without taking three flights of stairs to the higher floors.
Narakawa Shiho would be my name - Family name, followed by personal name. 24 years old, female, a self-proclaimed biologist who dabbles in engineering and electronics. Rather charming, if I'm allowed to boast, in a red blouse with above-average breasts and a frilly white skirt that reaches right above my knees - I got it as a gift for myself upon arriving here. My parents migrated over here from Hokkaido before I was born, and I grew up on the western coasts before coming over to NYC five years back. It's been...acceptable, since then.
"Alright, here goes!" The man at the counter lifts the cup, revealing the scores of the dice laid within.
"Six, five! Odds!"
...Shit.
The luckier half of the table erupts in excitement, overshadowing my group in its entirety as my budget gets cut in half for the fifth time today. I sigh and turn back to the nearby table with my beer on it, drinking it down to a fifth of its maximum size and resting my head on the table. I don't feel like throwing away any money right now.
"Place your bets, everyone! What will it be!?"
