Upon the eastern corner of the Gestalt Empire, tucked away in a deep forest, there laid the ancient temple of Veran. Broken and battered by both time and nature’s cruel touch, the place of worship had long since fallen into utter ruin. The buildings were crumbling, the people gone, even the atmosphere itself grim and foreboding. It was said that the temple itself had once been the center of worship for an ancient civilization that had given tribute to the Water Goddess, and yet through some act of hubris they drew their deity’s rage. The civilization had vanished in an instant, leaving their cities to ruin. Even now their fate remains unknown; some claim that they were simply plucked from existence, others say that their minds and bodies were twisted and broken. Yet all can agree that they were punished for their unknown crime, never to walk upon mortal lands ever again.
Of course, these are naught more than legends.
What is known is that Veran is a massive temple of many opportunities and many dangers. Whether they be seeking treasure, knowledge, or a boost to their ego countless individuals have tried to brave the abandoned place. While some have proven successful, others have never returned. Those who have been fortunate to survive their venture into the place of worship speak of a strange, yet ferocious, beast that lurks within the ruins. Dangerous and supposedly without mercy, it has served as a guardian of the temple for as long many could recall. Of course there are those who don’t believe in the monster, who think that it’s nothing more than a myth used by treasure hunters to scare away any competition.
Who can really say?
