Space wasn't the final frontier. By all means, it was just one of many out there. Who was to know that there were several universal pocket dimensions waiting to be explored, planets filled with sweeping blue oceans hiding all sorts of secrets or vast mountain ranges with countless caves just ripe for spelunking into? More importantly, what kinds of lifeforms were out there? Thousands of scientists had already discovered life on countless planets while aspiring colonists and travelers had found sentient, intelligent life. As of right now in the year E-3769 there haven't been any hyper-intelligent creatures worthy of noting, though there were still plenty of unexplored planets out there with lifeforms who could very well have built their own mega-societies to rival mankind's own. All that these enterprising humans had to do was seek them out and discover them!
Which brings us to Zelon-3, the aptly-named third planet of the Zealous System, which in turn was aptly-named on account of the almost inspiring, bright sun and lively planets there. Zelon-3 was a planet of large, expansive jungles and roaming seas that held a treasuretrove of undocumented lifeforms. For the all-female crew of the Raven's Maw, a Galactic Research Vessel, the sight of this planet helped inspire them to collect as many samples as they could get. There were soil and stool samples, water and bacteria dishes, leaves from over a hundred plants and plenty of native fruit and vegetables. But the most important addition to the vast collection in the cargo hold of the Raven's Maw was a large egg the size of a six-year old human child. Found all by its lonesome in a cluster of trees and waste, the egg was too much of an interesting find to pass up.
So interesting and unique was this egg that it had to be analyzed right away, or rather, it had to be delivered to a nearby space station just a few solar systems away. The Galactic Federation had several research vessels in its employ as well as space stations, though it would be the Webster Research Vessel nearby that got the egg. After docking, delivering and then refueling their craft, the crew of the Raven's Maw decided to linger at the space station for some good ol' fashioned R&R, choosing to leave the egg in the hands of the many female scientists and workers there. Most of the people there were civilians and researchers, but the Raven's Maw crew had a captain, navigator, engineer, two pilots, field scientist, nurse and two security officers with them. All were quite lovely in their own way!
And so, after carting the egg off into the space station's vast cargo hold with the rest of the ship's bounty and other 'artifacts', there was the sudden call for all crew to come to the station's mess hall for the afternoon meal. Due to a few food shortages it was unwise to miss a meal, so nearly everyone left their stations to eat. But the Raven's Maw field scientist, a buxom woman by the name of Xiang, declined the offer and instead made her way down to the space station's cargo hold where clean, sterile white walls and rows of shipping containers greeted her. She was too curious about the egg her crew members had found and wanted to investigate it before any of the other scientists on this vessel could get at it. Xiang, quite simply put, did not like being denied opportunities and walked purposefully around the cargo hold in search of the sleek pedestal the egg rested upon.
But the cargo hold was such a mess, a maze of containers and boxes and whatnot. Xiang sighed and began her search, feeling like an ant amongst giant monuments. As for the egg, it was located near the center of the cargo hold and had been boxed in by a few other shipping containers. Shadowed and secluded, not to mention surrounded by questionable cargo containing various fauna and whatnot, there were so many places to hide if whatever was inside that egg decided to pop out and slink about. But nobody feared that the egg would hatch; especially Xiang!
"We should have just kept the egg to ourselves," Xiang muttered as she continued to look around for the egg. She peered down a long corridor and shook her head. "Where's that damned red container?"
