The sea was vast, unfathomably deep and far. Enos stood on a narrow sandbar and looked out to the infinite blue with wonder and trepidation. He had left the reef before, journeying to the nearby island chains. Places familiar to his kind and no further away than his eyes could see. Little dots on the horizon, always close enough to find his way back from should he venture out. It was not uncommon for him to go and spend days or even weeks on one island or another, looking for relics and artifacts to bring back to the reef.

As one of the Mer Enos was naturally adept to spend long amounts of time in the water. His pale, pearly skin was hairless and his feet were broad and flat. He resembled a human in his form and features but his fingers and toes were webbed, he had sharp teeth and his hair was stiff and stringy, sectioned off with beads into heavy locks. His blue tattoos were a mark of his status among his people. He was one of many princes, brother to the king and a well respected scholar. For the first time in his life his work would take him beyond the reef. The idea scared and enthralled him. He stared at the horizon until the sun sank. Then silently, he submerged, dropping below the waves without a sound.

He swam down to an opening in the reef and then up into a large grotto. Two guards were slacking off at the entrance. A blue skinned male with a striped pattern down his back and a sandy colored younger male were bent over a game featuring brightly colored shells and a single pearl for each player. They took turns guessing which shell held the other players pearl and with each failed guess a trinket was thrown into a pile to be claimed by the winner at the end of the game. Judging from the size of the pile of shiny stones, coins and ornaments the two had been at it for some time. Enos resisted chuckling to himself as he approached them. With a single withering look from him the pair snapped to attention, the younger of the two at least having the decency to look sheepish. Unable to maintain his stern countenance he gave the lad a pat, "Try to stay vigilant, I know it's boring but you have a job to do," he said.

"yes sir!" the boy said, nearly tripping over his spear in an effort to stand even straighter.

Enos grinned and shook his head. Without further ado he walked through an arched stone formation and entered the kingdom. It was larger than one might expect, a giant underwater cavern that ran the entire length of the barrier reef and the island closest to it. The walls of the cave were lined with cubic structures and stair ways, small homes stacked all the way to the high ceiling. Various colorful Mer bustled about, most of them on their way home. Broad stone bridges connected one side of the cave to the other and in the very middle of the wide pool of sea water was a wide strip of rock upon which the town square and market place resided. This central hub was in the process of emptying out as vendors closed their stalls and people returned home for the night. Though Enos always stopped to peruse the goods on display tonight there was no time for it. he walked up to the end of the square to a large building. The palace, where his brother and the queen resided.

His brother was still in the front hallway, perched on a whalebone seat adorned with coral figures of past kings and queens. In front of him groveled a thin, eel like man with enormous milky eyes and bumpy, mottled, algae coated skin. Enos frowned in distaste, a muckling. One of the lower citizens, more creature than the rest of the Mer, this one didn't have a tail like many of them did but his mouth resembled a lamprey's, circular and full of needle like teeth. He did not speak, rather he signed to the King and made harsh sucking sounds that seemed to shudder his whole body. Upon seeing Enos the King waved the muckling away.

King Talos was a large and imposing man, his skin was a blue grey color, adorned with faded stripes, he had sharp features and a long, muscular body. His stiff white hair was cropped short close to his skull and he had a wide mouth full of sharp teeth. Though most Mer were ambiguous, resembling other fish or sea creatures primarily in skin pattern and nothing else it was impossible not to associate the king with a large and deadly shark. Though Enos recognized his broad grin as affectionate an unfamiliar Mer would have been intimidated by the predatory mouth full of teeth.

"I'll be sad to see you leave us," said Talos.

Enos smiled at him, "And I will be sad to go, but if my calculations are correct there are remnants of another Mer kingdom to the North East, I must go and search for artifacts, before they are found by humans," he added with a note of seriousness.

Talos rubbed his chin, "Yes, as much as I adore my wife I think it would be best if no more humans were allowed into our world. Are you certain you don't want me to send an escort of guards with you? Perhaps my lovely queen would even agree to go with you, she knows a lot more about humankind than either you or I. At least speak with her before you leave, even if you are determined to go alone."

Enos smiled, 'You know me well, brother, I feel that I'll have more luck being undetected if I go by myself. You know I always work alone, but if it will appease you, I will speak to her majesty."

As Queen to the mer people of this kingdom Anya often felt pressure to do well for the sake of the people. Despite being cared for mentally and physically she and Talos hadn’t been able to produce an heir. Anya was beginning to wonder if it was because of the fact she was a human before that was complicating things but a visit from the palace Doctor assured her that was not the case. Now she had to figure out how to break the news to her beloved husband. Taking a deep breath she began making her way to the throne room.

The sky was a beautiful bright blue, birds chirped happily as they flew about gathering food and chasing their mates. Sighing deeply Luna breathed in the clean fresh air and smiled softly. She hadn’t been living in this charming little Oceanside town for long but she was in love with the area, especially the beach. The personalities of the people in the area were an acquired taste; she expected that from a small community. Even so, they were defiantly better than city folk by far.
Raising a hand she pushed her raven wing black hair behind her ear, the long tresses fell to her belly button and were straight and silky. Her flawless skin was a beautiful olive color and although her parents were Hawaiian she had dreamy seafoam green eyes surrounded by long black lashes. Her lips though mostly untouched were full and shaped in a way that was meant for long kisses.

Turning down the dirt path leading to her favourite place on the beach Luna frowned when she noticed there was more debris than usual washed up on shore. When she got closer she put down a small bucket she was holding that contained a mini shovel and a few other items meant for beachcombing. “What the hell?” She whispered to herself then crouched down to hover over a few dead fish. She was glad she wore a red tank top and not the matching shirt to her white shorts. Looking down at her feet she observed the waves rolling over her red sandals, her frown deepened when she noticed some sort of slime in the water.

Talos tended the court, his face stony and stoic as he and Enos poured over every grievance and addressed every issue. When the Queen arrived both men greeted her warmly.

"How fares her majesty?" Enos asked politely. Though he spoke to her as one was expected to speak to a queen his tone did not lack a brotherly familiarity.

....

Within the slime at Luna's feet was a shining shell, dark as a blood red ruby and as large as a man's fist. It swirled in the shape of a nautilus shell and inspite of the cold slime it was slightly warm to the touch, humming with power. Almost as though it were alive....

....

"Enos has brought an important matter to my attention," said Talos as he wound his arm around his wife, "He thinks he knows where to find an ancient treasure. He wants your advice for his upcoming journey to retrieve it."

Enos nodded, "If I'm not mistaken, a rare shell called the Heart of the Sea has 'awakened' and made its way to the surface. I can sense it drifting towards land. It has a strange magic, older than our own and I would like to find and study it before it falls into human hands."

"I am well Enos, thank you for asking." She gave him a warm smile then snuggled against her husband as she turned her head and looked at him. She wanted to tell him about the baby immediately but she wanted to wait for a private moment between the two of them. Sometimes she wished he wasn't so busy so they could be in a newlywed blissful faze again. She's even settle for once and a while but she knew the kingdom was important to Talos. It was also important to her so she held onto the hope there romantic time alone would come eventually. She just hoped it was before she started showing, containing excitement was hard. She had a whole new respect for an eager child now. Children, they were going to be parents and she couldn't be happier.

Anya did her best to keep the light of excitement from showing in her eyes but when Talos spoke about needing her advice on an important matter he had her undivided attention and she focused immediately. "When I was human I loved beachcombing, I'd spend hours looking for anything the sea pushed out. So I can say with absolute certainty that a human will indeed pick up the shell the second it surfaces. If you want to get it before the humans do you should leave to retrieve it as soon as possible." As she spoke she looked from Enos to Talos and paused on a thought.

"However..." She looked at Enos. "If you notice the location of the shell directing you more inland the best place to check for the shell are road side markets, humans sell numerous items there along with anything they discovered on the beach. The second place to look would be an auction where some people try to sell rare or valuable items, but an auction would be further in land, like a larger town or in the worse case... a city. If the ancient treasure ends up shipped to a city it will be next to impossible to find without help." She finished with a sigh and placed her hand on her belly without thinking.

Luna blinked twice as her attention shifted from the odd slime to the the deep crimson color in the water and her heart stopped for a second, she thought she had hurt herself somehow but there was no pain. If the source of the color had been a fish it would have darted away or floated to the surface by now. Frowning she reached down and poked her fingers into the water where the red color bled and expected to find a polished stone or sea glass but her fingers moved over the smooth curves of what could only be a type of shell.

Reaching further into the water with both hands Luna carefully felt around the shell until she freed it from the sand and pulled it up out of the water. A soft gasp left her lips the second she saw the size and color of the remarkable shell but the warmth though subtle coming from it surprised her and she dropped it thinking some sort of sea creature was living in the shell. Silently scolding herself for being so touchy she carefully picked the shell up once again, as she stood and turned it over to examine it closer. "How beautiful..." She whispered.
