It seemed to start slowly and gradually, and strangely out of no where. The dead were abnormally coming back to life. It wasn't noticed right away at first you heard about sick people here and there. There was some kind of virus going around they would say. A lot of people would be out sick from work or school and would just never come back. Tales of strange behavior, of homeless people biting random people. Riots seemed to break out in cities due to the mass confusion. The police were overwhelmed and the news wasn't reporting on these strange incidents. Homeless people doing crazy things and viral epidemics happened all of the time, right? It wasn't until the random power outages started occuring that people started to pay attention. By then it was too late and utter chaos, rioting, looting and property damage began after a week with no power, and people started going missing. Little did people realize that another missing person was just another person for the army of the undead. Soon the army was dispatched to random cities to try and keep the peace, and quarantine zones were established to try and deal with the sick. No one knew how this disease was spread and soon quarantine zones were over run with more walking dead people. Soon the armies disbanded and people were left to fend for themselves. It was either survive or become one of them.
Bryan didn't know why he went to school that day. It seemed nearly 25% of the school was out from some sort of flu. Being in ground zero just meant that he would catch it, yet he went anyway.
The school principal came over the loud speaker that morning to tell the students to wear face masks to prevent even more of an outbreak, the classrooms seemed a lot more empty and even some teachers didn't show. It wasn't until later in the morning when teachers were told to put on the television sets in the room and turn to a news station.
"The governor has issued a state of emergency. The epidemic has spread to Valera county, Marise County and New Lexon county. The governor has ordered that people stay where they are, do not leave your homes if you are in a place of business or school, stay there until army personal can come to escort you home or to a safe zone. We repeat stay where you are. Do not approach any suspicious people on the streets, and stay away from the sick."
Naturally this message lead to mass confusion and hysteria within Valera Highschool. Students and faculty wanting to get home safely with their families were ordered to stay put until help arrived. The principal and security guards had every student and faculty move to the school gymnasium and cafeteria until army came to bring them home.
One hour went by, then two hours, three and four and it was already dark out. The school cafeteria workers tried to provide food for the students and staff. Five hours then 10. Students were falling asleep in the gym. At night people near the windows could make out gun shots outside in the distance. When morning arrived and panic starting to set in many students tried to leave on their own accord much to the principal trying to keep them safe. But there were too many of them for a few to stop. After about 14 hours half of the students had left to find their way home on their own. Faculty was ordered to stay behind.
Another day went by, and no help had come. Students were getting restless in the gym. Finally a few faculty members and about a group of thirty students said they would go out and try and get some help. That was two days ago.
Bryan called his parents from the gym when he was ordered to stay until help arrived. His parents sounded worried but it seemed that everything was under control. He tried to call them every other hour to check in, eventually they stopped answering their phone and his battery died from too much use, his last text from them was "Going to safe zone, meet us there."
After four days of waiting for rescue it seemed there were only a handful of students and faculty left in the gym, the principal seemed disheveled and tried to make some desperate calls out of the school for help but the phone lines seemed down. All during this time there was the sound of gun fire and explosions going on from who knows where, and pillars of smoke could be seen in the skyline from distant fires. It seemed that society had collapsed somehow.
Things seemed pretty safe the principal had the gymnasium on lock down, and there seemed to be enough food and water to last everyone for a few more days, and even though people had been sitting in their same clothes for that time and the bad body odor had began to settle in, things seemed alright. Until that night when the dead got in the school building. There was a knock at the gymnasium door, or rather a bump into. The principal thinking help had finally arrived went to answer the door, and that was the final mistake he ever made as he was grabbed by a dead student and bit in the neck. Everyone who was in the gym jumped to their feet, and clamored for any window or back door they could find, as the dead seemed to be filling into the gymnasium now.
Bryan sat up and ran down the bleachers following the other students as they made their way to the back door of the gym. With enough force everyone got the gym door opened and everyone spilled out into the night. Everyone seemed to run off in their respective directions towards their homes. There was safety in numbers though and nobody seemed to be following that rule.
Bryan tried to stay with a teacher, at least how she was dressed she seemed like a teacher. One he hadn't had before.
"Excuse me Ms. What the fuck is going on what was that?" Bryan asked the lady as they came to a stop, absolutely horrified after seeing his principals throat get ripped open by another person's mouth.
