It had never occurred to Sasha that she could be more than some menial cubical worker who answered phone calls all day, supplying her knowledge of the basic products her employers offered to the drones of humanity: technical service was all she was good at and all that she thought she would ever amount to, that was until one particular morning while sitting in a local coffee shop, her honey brown eyes fixated on the luminescent screen of her Apple Iphone, did she have a strange, unyielding desire to look up job offer's posted to the world wide web.
Her fingers flew across the keys, typing in 'Jobs in my area', the Google search engine bringing up a plethora of websites, all searching for that special someone or group of someones. Nothing jumped out at her immediately as she tucked a lock of her long brunette hair behind her multi-pierced ear, that was until she gazed down at a website, a familiar one at that and pressed her thumb against the blue hyperlink.
While it wasn't the most glamours of sites, it was certainly a place to find the odds and ends of career choices; usually they were scams but there were always diamonds in the rough. Ah Craig's list.
It was while she searched through full time jobs did she come across an ad that asked, "The Hive Mind". Looking over the title a few more times, blinking away any sleep that might have lingered within those honey orbs, she pondered why such a strange title.
That title in of itself was too good to pass up, what idiot or what evil genius had posted such a tantalizing title? Whoever was responsible, they were brilliant! Sasha looked at the time stamp and a wide grind turned up the corners of her mouth as she clicked on the title and her screen went from the hundreds of ads into the details of his particular ad, quickly reading over the brief summary.
What she read shocked her, horrified her but by the same token, excited. Sasha was your typical twenty something year old who yearned to be recognized from some great accomplishment like most people but was never one of the lucky ones to be recognized for anything interesting. Instead she worked a thankless job and returned to her quiet apartment each night to browse the internet on her labtop or mindless watch Netflix until she fell asleep on the couch, only to repeat the process countless times. However, what she didn't tell people was that she was a closet freak. Nothing so abnormal that she would be thrown into some dark, dank dungeon, but she yearned for a handful of things.
She desired to bring life into the world by abdominal means; what did this mean? It meant that in a world that had accepted higher sentient beings, everything from a the smallest creatures to those that were still being discovered, she desired to offer her body up to them (whomever), to use her body to incubate and birth their young. Conventional pregnancy was great but it lasted months and it often didn't show immediate gratification. Sasha was not a patient person, even for her line of work, and because of this she yearned to feel the life that was placed within her womb squirm and wriggle within the tightening confines as it grew.
This ad, this "Hive Mind' add was offering that. It offered her a chance to be something more, offered her a glimpse into a world that was beyond her and to be forever in an endless loop.
Collecting her things and racing down the street to her car, she dialed the number and scheduled a meeting with the originator of the post.
Anxiously she sat in a white lobby, her heart hammering as she waited for some sort of test results that her potential employer had required of her before she could be introduced to this "hive mind'.
"Sasha?" A female voice called for her, instantly standing up to collect her test results, hopeful that fate was on her side. Quickly sauntering up to the young woman, her skin a deep hue of greens and blues, her inviting smile making the young brunette hopeful that her tests had all come back good.
"Everything checked out, you're a healthy, twenty-three year old female with no problems with fertility." If not for such a formal meeting or the desire to impress the stern looking young man beside her, she would have jumped up and down and clapped her hands "T-Thank you!" She squeaked, allowing herself to betray her true happiness in her voice alone.
When the nurse disappeared and the man came to occupy the space beside her, Sasha regarded him with wide eyes, "You're positive this is what you want?" He questioned, his tone completely uninterested. Instead of declaring herself a blatant freak in front of god and everyone, she weakly nodded, though jumped for joy inwardly.
The man huffed, perhaps worried that she would back out as the two left and went to an entirely different location.
It was upon arriving did Sasha understand the title that had sparked this entire escapade in the first place. When the vehicle they had arrived in came to a slow halt, Sasha looked up in pure amazement.
They had come to a part of the city that was untouched by the cold fingers of technology and instead thrived on unspoiled earthly beauty. All around them everything was in bloom, everything was alive and green! Above her within the trees that had to have easily been hundreds of thousands of years old, bird sang happily or men with large bags flew over head.
Wait...men?
It was apparent that these men were workers, part of a hive that Sasha and her unnamed escort were walking towards.
"S-So the hive mind is-?" She questioned, letting her unfinished sentence hang between the two.
"Yes, it is exactly as the name suggests, a hive." How very peculiar but so very exciting.
