Mike sighed as he picked up his backpack and started walking home. It was the end of another tough day of classes and he was tired. The walk was not far, which was one good thing. He took the slightly longer route as always. Even though he was tired, he did not want to run into the girl from next door. He knew she walked home at about the same time as him and he wanted to avoid any awkardness.
They had been friends as kids, living next door and having a good time. Then they entered high school. As the years went by they seemed to drift apart. Mike had the feeling that she no longer liked him. He had the idea that she might even hate him. Yet he liked her a lot. He wanted to ask her out, but had never been able to. Now that they were in college, he was certain she would be picked up soon by some jock. Mike knew he had no chance. He was average. Average height, build, fitness, and looks. Short brown hair, blue eyes, thin, but not very muscular. So he stayed away from her, afraid of the awkwardness between them as he tried to make conversation with someone who didn't like him.
He got home and went right to his room. He dropped his stuff next to his bed and immediately started to work on his assignments. He was fairly smart and could do the work easily, but liked getting it done early. Then he could go out with his friends and hang out. Anything to get him away from the house and the view of the neighbor's house. Unfortunately his room had a view right into "her" room. He didn't like the constant reminder of what he couldn't have.
