Chloe couldn’t remember the last time she felt this energized. It could be that she was drunk and that didn’t really go hand in hand with memory but, she really didn’t think so. Not when she finally got a moment to hang out with her friends for longer than an hour, not when she got hit on more than a few times in one night, and definitely not when she had drinks and good music to keep her spirits up. And damn if she wasn’t high on life right now. Life after college was kick right up the ass and she was still recovered. It made her value the moments when she could forget about it. The only odd thing about it was the presence of her brother. They got along great but, with the age difference and interests, they didn’t travel in the same circles. Fortunately, by the end of the night, none of that seemed to matter.
“Don’t forget to look both ways before you cross the street Lo. Those lights are there for a reason.” Chloe pursed her lips in mock annoyance at Marcus as he hugged her a little too tight and a little too long. She slapped his chest lightly before dislodging herself and moving closer to her brother. The music was still loud and there were more than enough people left in the house that it was clear the night was far from over. Even so, she was ready to wind down and her feet were starting to hurt.
“I’m not a 5 year old and we live 3 blocks away in a residential area. There are no street lights.” She pressed her petite frame against her relative with a wide smile, his arm now cushioned beneath her pillowy cleavage. It was clear to anyone watching that she had a few too many strawberry daiquiris. Marcus only wished it was him in her brother’s place. “Besides my brother will take care of me.”
Melinda’s brow rose in amusement as she looked at the two siblings and replied, “I highly doubt that. I can’t tell which one of you is worse off. Just text me when you get home.” The two friends hugged as a few others shouted their goodbyes before the two left. She was quiet as she took in the fresh air. The nights were finally getting cooler as autumn made its presence known and Chloe was grateful. She felt warm despite wearing a thin, short shirt dress and boots so she pulled her hair into a high bun as they made the short trek to their apartment.
“I know it’s late but I don’t feel like going to bed. I don’t have to go to work tomorrow and the night is yo…well it’s late but, at 23, I’m still too young to turn in early. I want to hold off walking with a cane and turning in at 8pm for as long as possible.” Chloe didn’t know what she wanted to do instead but, her brother always had a way of curing her boredom. She didn’t think tonight would be any different.
