Of Poets and Pirates
The water churned in the wake of many oars as the black ship cut through the water. The black sails were down now, as the ship tore towards shore. Standing a mid ships Captain Owen Breaker, nicknamed iron hand, from the basket hilted saber he wore at his right hip, showing his left handedness, just yet one more thing for people to underestimate him for. The Captain was not a huge man, but smaller, wirey and quick. He did not need to be 400 pounds to slit a manâs throat, just faster than he was. As many bigger would be captains of the Black Death had learned.
Ironhand gave his orders in quiet tones as they closed in on a merchant vessel. Their lookout wasnât even awake⦠This would be easy. One of his men snickered aloud at the pitiful ship they were approaching, and out came ironhandâs saber, the hilt and its basket guard smacking the man upside the head. The sailor fell to the ground holding his jaw but knowing better than to cry out. Owen raised the saber high and then brought it down and the ship lept forward the oars churning as the longshipâs ram slammed into the side of the merchant vessel and the pirates swarmed over the sides. The battle was on. In truth the battle wasnât very difficult, the few defenders were soon killed or surrendered and soon the ship was in custody of the crew of the Black Death. The sailors of the merchant vessel were swiftely secured or executed according to their value.
âPut her ashore, we need fresh water.â Breaker called and the longship moved into the beach smoothly. "Theres another merchant that won't be sellin no goods." Ironhand said smerking to himself.
