A woman was waiting inside of a local Starbucks downtown. She was on the second level waiting patiently drinking a passion fruit lemonade shaken ice tea. She had earbuds inside of her ears keeping to herself but casually and anxiously looking around, observing the other people, waiting for the person she was supposed to meet in exactly five minutes. She had been here half an hour, wanting to arrive earlier than expected.
She had focused on a couple her age, possibly a little older at the counter. Her eye’s watched as the male wrapped his arm around the woman’s waist as they made their transaction with the barista.
“Emma?” A low gentle voice inquired. Emma turned her head to look up at an older male who had strong facial features and dark mysterious eyes. Emma nodded silently and took a few prolonged moments before responding. “I’m Adam….”
“Ughh Oh H-H-Hi.” She stammered nervously and raised out of the seat pulling her earbuds out. The man gave a charismatic smile and kindly put a hand up walking over to the other side to sit across from her.
“Please have a seat. No need to be nervous around me. I am a representation of hopefully your future loving family. You don’t need to overthink this meeting.” He watched her sit down and kept a smile planted on his face.
“We see that you’re very curious of our ways Emma. We saw your blogs, we’ve seem your excellent research and actually with your consent would like it for reference. We also know when you have been spying on us. Emma….you could have just asked about information directly sooner. We are not vicious. We don’t take hostages.” The man was very smooth and fluent in the way he spoke. He had Emma’s complete and undivided attention. He placed a hand hesitantly over the table and tilted his head asking and she nodded as he placed one hand over both of hers.
“We normally go through a process. You already know this. You’ve studied it. You’ve witnessed parts of it. You have weeks to wait if we went that route. We’ve had council and spoken it over and think you deserve advancement. So in that case we’ve made an exception, the only exception in years.” He continued as Emma looked at him, fear, curiosity and excitement in her young youthful eyes.
“What exception?” She asked eager.
“I don’t think there is anything you could ask that you don’t already know. You have to witness it, seeing is believing.” He said squeezing her folded hands. “Maggie wants to see you. You’re invited for the week to our family.” He said and Emma’s eyes widen, almost in horror. It was so unexpected. She was prepared to start the strenuous process of multiple meetings in order to even be recruited.
“You’ve got to be shitting me.”She breathed out and caught Adam’s smirk.
“Everything will be provided and paid for. If you wish you can bring a bag of belongings. We will sign a written contract that will be notarized for your safety, reassuring you of your return.” He pulled out a folder that was neatly organized. He slid it across the table.
“Take this home. Go over it, sign it and if you wish. I will be here the same time tomorrow to collect it and give you further instructions. You don’t have to meet me and I will assume your decision." Adam said nodding.
Emma stood there looking like someone had just knocked the wind out of her chest and sat up awkwardly brushing her hair back. Her eye’s darted around, she was panicking and trying not to show it.
“There is nothing to fear Emma, were not what the media thinks of a typical cult. There have been to mass suicides, no sexual harassment, no main focus on god and using his name as an excuse to do anything unjustly….you have studied.”
“Maggie wants to meet you. She’s very excited to see someone so young interested. She welcomes you with open arms. Her kindness is ever ending.” Adam said getting up.
“Think about it. Go eat, go rest, go distract your mind. You’re worrying, so much stress, so much anger and depression is radiating from such a beautiful soul." He said making her look at him flabbergasted. She watched Adam bow and smile before grabbing his messenger bag and walked out of sight, blending in with the crowd before she could make him out. Emma sat there bewildered.
