Brianna's Story begins...

The world had seemed to be falling the pieces. Droughts that were only ended by torrential floods, forest fires that were only doused by terrible storms, and sickly crops harvested from the nearby farms that made any who ate them ill all plagued the city of Jahanis where you grew up. When an avalanche from the Twin Mountains blocked the road to the city fully and prevented much needed help from arriving, the city was at a breaking point.

So when a possible solution was found, it was little surprise to anyone that the council leapt at the opportunity to solve their woeful problems. A cavern had emerged in one of the recent earthquakes, the walls etched with strange markings that looked like a language nobody could read. More importantly, the back of the cave contained a wall of shimmering purple light, which as it pulsed and glowed seemed to beckon people towards it.

That was when it was decided a sacrifice was needed, with the name of every girl in the city being placed into a lottery and a single name chosen. Brianna Taylor had been the name chosen. Your name. That had been a week ago now, and since then you’d been held in a ‘place of honour’ in the finest mansion in the city. Your every whim was catered for with the utmost luxury, fine foods (or as fine as could be managed given the troubles) strong drinks, entertainment fit for a queen, and of course your family had been very well compensated for the loss they were expected to receive.

There was one thing you were not allowed however, your freedom. Despite the luxury of the rooms you were given with the feather bed so soft it felt like a cloud, any number of fine gowns you desired… it was still a prison. A way to say ‘thank you for your life’ before your inevitable death as you were forced through the shimmering wall of light.

This morning, you had been woken early by all twelve members of the city council, and each of them had exchanged a solemn farewell before handing you over to a group of armed guards, who had escorted you to the cave where the wall of light waited. Your family had not been allowed to come with you, simply you, the guards, and a handful of city officials to act as witnesses. A prayer had been offered… and with that one of the guards had roughly pushed you into that strange pulsing light.

The whole world seemed to turn white, forcing you to close your eyes for the sheer brightness of it, and then with a loud *Thwack* and a pain in the back of your head, everything turned black as you lost consciousness.

Two hours pass….

“Oh thank the gods, you’re waking up!” a high and somewhat panicky female voice announces from behind. “I’m so sorry I hit you! I just saw you appear out of thin air and thought you were one of those demons, then whacked you with my staff before I saw who you were, I’m so sorry”! The words came out in a babbled rush, now sounding more relieved than apologetic. “You know you shouldn’t just pop up in front of people like that, not in times like these!”

As you come to your senses properly you find yourself out in the warm breeze of an open plain, shin-high lush green grasses interspersed with small colourful flowers, clusters of trees and the occasional bush decorating the landscape. In a few places the plants seem to rustle, likely small animals moving about, as well there also seem to be a few herds of wild cows. Birdsong is audible, if faint, given the small number of trees in which to perch. To the north the borders of a forest are visible, the view to the east is cut off by hills, to the south is the stream that supplies water to the area, and to the west the plains seem to stretch for miles… certainly not the cave you last remember yourself in.

Standing over you is someone, or perhaps something, you have certainly never seen before. That voice you heard belongs to a feline looking creature, perhaps five and a half feet tall, greyish-white fur covering her entire body, a bushy tail swinging lazily behind her. She’s wearing a fairly modest black and white dress with a ruffled hem, the red hair on her head framing a pretty, if cat-like, face holding two concerned looking blue eyes. In the woman's hand is a long but fairly thin walking stick, probably what she hit you with in her panic, and behind her is a wooden hand-cart filled up with a variety of strange looking vegetables.

I gulp and look in a mix of amazement and fear to the strange creature over me. Driven by instinct, i move my hand over the plain's grass, as if seeking for something to grab and perhaps use somehow over this dire situation.

I can remember the cave, the mansion, the food, drink and clothes and i remember my parentes and my city. Suddenly the cave's image comes to my mind and i smile wide after my first shock of having a so weird creature over me, when i understand the fact the indeed i still alive and not dead as expected. Alive at a strange place and with a strange creature over me, for sure. But i still alive and in sounding health, as i may feel.

I shake my head for a moment and take a glance around, more to thr horizon at all direction i may, just for a while, to understand a little bit better what sort of place is that. At my inconsciente, the color and beauty of wild life and flowers work in a relaxing manner, making me few a sort of fond of the new place in question. Then my attention turns to what really matters: the strange creature ove me. I frown a little bit, cocking my head and trying to understand what that thing would be and what that words would mean. "Demons" is not a nice word to use and for sure,if there are demons, then it would be a twisted version of hell.

I wet my lips and prepare myself to talk to a cat. It is not the first time i talk to a cat, for sure, but it is the first time u actually wait hearing a reply from the creature: "So... hmmm... my name is Brianna. Miss... cat. Would you, please, tell me where i am and... if it not a problem at all, could you please help me to get on foot once again? It is importante to a girl knowing if everything is in place after a shocking travel which she believed would get her killer!" - My tone sounds very serious, even with so ironic words.

The feline woman rolled those eyes of hers as you scramble around through the grass, quite obviously looking for something to defend yourself with. Your fingers only find the roots of grass, a few small pebbles, and the soft dirt of the ground below, nothing useful. “Oh I said I was sorry didn’t I? It’s just not an everyday occurrence that a girl pops out of nothing in front of you, and uh, well, pardon my saying so but you don’t exactly look like you’re from around this neck of the woods”.

Remembering her manners eventually, the creature offered a furred hand to help Brianna up to her feet, but of course what the human girl said just prompted a chuckle “My name’s Minerva, not Miss Cat” she laughed, before repeating herself “Sorry about the whack on the head there sweetie, you just shocked me and it was a natural reaction”.

Noticing the way you wet your lips, she unfastens a water skin from her belt and hands it over “water?” she offered, before listening to your questions. “Well, as for where you are… I can’t be right certain given that the sun's covered by the clouds right now so I can’t tell how long I’ve been walking, but I’d say somewhere in the region of about four or five miles north of Vanheim” she answered, as if that helped at all.

Frowning at the last thing you said, the woman demands “Hang on a moment, you figured you’d be dead? You’re not leading some pack of demons down to me are you? Where are you from and… well, not to be rude, but what exactly are you?”

With the help, i take back on my feet, using a moment to shake off any dirty, dust or grass from my dress, as i am very concerned about appearance and specially my clothings. After that, i make a short and a little clumsy courtesy to Minerva, introducing myself: "My name is Brianna, Miss Minerva. And i am a human. I was picked by the people of my home city, Jahanis, to be threw against a purple glowing thing, what was supposed to kill me!" - I rise my hands, checking i am alive once again - "But i guess this is not what happened al all. People did it because e serie of strange cataclismic events, and they believed picking a virgin at random and throwing the girl against a misterious glowing wall would help on calming things. They are very smart! - I sigh for a moment, looking depressed, before following - "As you can see, Miss Minerva, i am not a very popular girl."

I smile a little, as water is offered. I am not trully thirsty, but drinking a sip or two would help me calming down. "Honestly, miss, i guess i want to avoid any demonic creature as much as you!" - I handle back the water skin - "I am a human. A person. And everybody looks pretty much like myself at the place i came from!"

I make a concerned face, looking the horizon once again and then the sky. "Suns, you said?" - I ask, looking up and then to her - "Miss, i know nothing about this place and i confess i am not feeling much fine. Could you be gentle on giving me some information and directions?" - Then i take a look at the wooden cart filled with vegetable. "Perhaps i could help you on dragging this goods, in return for the favor." - I smile wide, looking cute to the cat like creature, not sure if she will be willing to be so helpful.

Giving her head a confused shake, the cat woman looks at you and muses out loud “Girl, I’m starting to think that that thump on the head knocked some of your senses loose”. She sighed and voiced things out loud to try and make sense of it. “You’re from somewhere called Jahanais, a place I’ve never heard of, and you were ‘killed but not’ by being pushed into some purple glowing wall… sounds like magic to me, some kind of portal like the ones that…” her mouth shut then, cutting off her words as a grim look passed over her face.

Fortunately she was delayed having to explain, as when you look upwards and see indeed there was only one brighter patch behind the clouds rather than two. “What? No. Sun’s. As in Sun is, not two”. With a quizzical look she glanced at you and asked tentatively “They, uh, they have two where you come from?”

As the conversation changes to your utter lack of knowing where you are though her curiosity seems to dampen, if just a little, and Minerva gives a little grimace. “Like I said, four or five miles to the south is Vanheim, a big city. I’m going there myself so we can walk together if you like, I think you and I need to have a talk on the way there as well, ‘cos if I’m right there’s going to be someone who wants to talk to you when we get there”.

“I have one condition though” the cat-creature warned, holding up a forestalling paw. “You’re gonna have to stop calling me Miss. My name’s Minerva, or Min”.

I take a smile as i stop for a moment, taking sure to make things sound right as i talk in a more controlled and calm manner after the first shock: "I am sorry, Minerva. I know i sound confusing. But things got confuse to me. I hope you understand." - Then, taking a step closer to the cat-like creature. "Listen, my name is Brianna and i came from a city named Jahanais. That s true and i took part on something don't understand and i am glad the experience kept me alive. Honestly, at the moment i am loving this place!" - I take a warm smile. "I suppose i misunderstood a few things. We have only one sun too!" - I giggle and take a glance to south, before looking o Minerva excited - "And i confess i wold love to travel south alongside you, and check the big city you talked about!" - I feel genuinely excited, because for the first time in my life i am not tied up, bound to work or my parents or anything else and feel blessed in having a sort of adventure by my own, like hose i ever heard on tales. Then, Minerva's last words drops into my mins and i frown, curious: "Minerva, i would be really glad on talking to you, specially to know a little more about this place. But, why do you think someone would like talking to ME at the big city? And who would be this person?" - I blink curious, but also a little concerned and mostly puzzled about how i could interest someone i never head of.
