Favorite Anime OSTs?

The question is simple. What are your favorite anime OSTs?

For me, a good anime always has a good OST!

For example, Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Kill La Kill! (Among many others!)

Not sure if this counts, but...

And also something SUPER old...

Also virtually all the gundam ones.

Turn A Gundam. It has a gorgeous soundtrack that sounds more like an orchestra soundtrack for a movie than for a series.

Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo also has a great soundtrack.

If an anime is all about a band, a talented band, the music better be good. Luckily, Beck delivers on this front. Every song from the title song to the ending song is very nice. Once you learn that the entire soundtrack is essentially the Beat Crusader's covering songs that other Japanese bands have created, it isn't a surprise that the music sounds "real". Below is two versions of the song "Like a Foojin". One is performed by the Beat Crusaders, as Beck; and the other performed by the original artists, Typhoon24 Feat. Tatsuzo of YKZ.

I really enjoy both versions, however I feel the original edges out the cover.

If you're a fan of anime, you've probably seen Cowboy Bebop. If you're a fan of music, you probably appreciate the care put into the soundtrack. Watanabe Shin'ichirō has a good ear, and it shows in the music he selected. I don't think I really have to list anything other than the opening, Tank.

I'm sure there's some level of nostalgia that makes me enjoy this soundtrack so much, however I feel that it is very strong. Having aired in 1979, there's a whole lot about Gundam that exemplifies the kind of style of anime from the 70's and early 80's. It certainly isn't for everyone, but even has a kid in the 90's I was able to appreciate just how cool this anime was, even up against the likes of the then recent, New Mobile Report Gundam Wing.

This song is one of my favorites from the series, and plays at the end of the third movie. Originally Mobile Suit Gundam was entirely unpopular in Japan, and was later re-edited into a three part movie. For those of you that prefer more of a contemporary rock sound, you might want to check out Andrew WK's, Gundam Rock, album.

Personally, I don't feel like I can go wrong either way.

Those are probably my top three.

You definitely can't go wrong with Mobile Suit Gundam. Char Ga Kuru is still one of my favorite tracks.

Gackt also did some pretty good remakes of Gundam tracks for his Gundam anniversary album.

Char Ga Kuru is another very good one. It's probably in my top three as far as the MSG soundtrack goes. I'm not a fan of Gackt, however. I'm sure some weeaboo types out there would consider it sacrilege for me to say so, but I prefer Andrew WK's covers (I actually don't like the rest of his music either), over Gackt's. That being said, the video for METAMORPHOZE is pretty neat; I want that cockpit as my desk chair.

I agree that Gundam has some great music especially, the intros for 0083, 8th MS Team and my favorite intro ZZ Gundam: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwRlvn1v8Ns

Then I would have to say Macross/Robotech is my favorite as the show has a lot of connections with music and story, and music is a very important element in the story.

I would also add Persona 4 cause it is a anime, though more a game but the OST is so epic.

Then special honors to Dragonball(Z) and Naruto which has some good intros and music. My favorite intro of these two being of course : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dP75aZvWVdw

Oh, that's right, how could I have forgotten Robotech? I don't know about the Japanese version (Macross) but the English version had some awesome '80s music.

Robotech is actually Macross(the first arc) Calvary Southern Cross(second part) and Gensis Climber Mospeada. Of those I can only speak for Macross which is still very based on music, and its sequel Macross 7 is and the OVAs like Zero and Plus are too. Plus is the only English one I think.

Macross 7

Fairy tail has always had great tracks but this is one of my favorites. :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXedWYVsIfM

Might I humbly add Samurai Champloo to the list? :) Particularly "The Million Way of Drum" (used in the below video) and "Same Ol' Thing"?

"Yusuke's Power Up" from Yuyu Hakusho always had a certain charm. And the truly brutal beatdown scene it came from viewable below:

I can't believe I forgot this one, this actually is the best use of music in a anime, the whole anime's music style is so amazing, the intro though is classic. Then again it is one of the great anime of all times.

Also forgot to mention Baccano, especially its opening theme:

If you're a fan of Cowboy Bebop's music, Baccano may be right up your alley. :)

.hack//sign!! Loved the OST. Not the anime quite as much though I did enjoy it.

Somehow I managed to overlook one of the better animated, and confusingly written, OVAs in Japanese animation: FLCL. With a soundtrack skillfully belted out by the Pillows, FLCL is a modern classic on every level I can think of. Like the works of the great Watanabe Shin'ichirō, this one does a great job of marrying the music with the imagery on the screen.

I'm totally fallen in love the la' corda primo passo soundtrack, I don't normally enjoy classical music but that soundtrack is so amazing and kicks a lot of ass.

Wow Fate OST hasn't been mentioned.

Fate/Zero or Unlimited Blade works are amazing OST's.

Also the Naruto OST has a special place in my heart.

Practically anything by Yoko Kanno: Macross Plus, Turn A Gundam, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain and so many more.

And I love the opening to Lain.

Also Makoto Shinkai picks wonderful songs for his movies. The soundtrack to '5cm Per Second', 'The Place Promised in Our Early Years' and 'Your Name' are all amazing.

Thanks to those who put up some amazing ones already, like many Gundam series, FLCL and others.

Psycho Pass and Parasyte: The Maxim certainly have something special. But I'm also a fan of instrumentals, and find myself listening to the Claymore soundtrack a lot. Shingeki no Kyojin, too.
