The man sat in the Cornerside Diner watching the final moments of the game while eating his burger with one hand, the other idly rolling a rather plain yet somehow remarkable ring along his fingers.
He finished his burger and stood going into the bathroom. He would never return. The ring lay on the counter beside his payment and his empty plate.
The ring drew much attention, especially from the cook and the waitress who had served the man. They closed for thirty minutes after the lunch crowd left to clean up and it was then that the cook and waitress both went for the ring.
Cleaning had been finished and the two were out back catching a smoke when the cook noted the woman wearing the ring. "Gimme that."
"Fuck you."
His heavily bearded face grew red as he lunged for her, gripping her throat and slamming her against the wall. "Gimme the fucking thing!"
She spit in his face, then dragged both hands down it her nails exposed. he shrieked in pain then fell back, blood spurting out of his somehow opened skull, his eyes destroyed.
She screamed herself, sobbing in terror now, as two patrolling policemen drew close their weapons drawn. The ring bounced out of the alley and into the main street of the small town.
