Katherine leaned back in her seat as the plane shuddered ever so slightly from some turbulence, perfectly normal she told herself, though she didn't entirely believe it, this was her first flight after all, and she was doing it alone to boot. But being alone, that was exactly what she needed right now. It had been almost a month now, and Katherine wasn't sure if the time had flown past in the blink of an eye or seemed like it had taken years, somehow she felt both at the same time. One month since she had broken up with her boyfriend after she had caught him with another woman, hell, not only that but the other woman was supposedly her friend! And what was their excuse? Because Katherine wasn't putting out and he had needs? Was that all a relationship was supposed to be about? Sex? Katherine thought the most important thing had been to be happy...she wasn't opposed to something more physical, but she didn't see the point in rushing to it. Half of the enjoyment was in the build up right? At least that's what she kept telling herself, trying not to blame herself for what had happened. No, she couldn't let herself think like that. This was not her fault...it was their fault. Neither of them had respected her enough to not go behind her back. Neither of them had been able to just talk to her. Maybe if he'd talked to her, explained how he was feeling and what he wanted....well maybe she would have considered it. Then again if he was the kind of person who'd cheat on her if he didn't get what he wanted then maybe it was a lucky escape. It was probably better to find out what kind of people they really were sooner rather than later. The girl shook her head in an attempt to clear it. She didn't want to think about that right now. This trip was supposed to be to get away from all that, a vacation just for her, where she could relax and forget about all of her problems, if only for a little while.
Katherine had just been about to drift off to sleep when the plane shuddered again, though this time somewhat more violently than before. As she glanced out of the window she saw nothing but black clouds....odd, it had been perfectly clear outside just a minute ago hadn't it? As the plane shuddered again there was an announcement for everyone to return to their seats, though a moment later the plane shuddered as there was a flash of lightning and the loud crack of thunder, a bolt of lightning seeming to pass mere feet from one of the windows. There was a single scream at first, but that one scream seemed to trigger others, panic starting to spread through the plane like a virus. Katherine had to hold herself back from joining, clenching her fists on the armrests. She wanted to close her eyes, but something prevented her from doing so.
Another crack of thunder, then suddenly the plane went dark. The lights cut off, the sound of the engines stopped suddenly. For a brief moment there was utter silence in the pitch darkness, it was almost peaceful. But it was broken quickly by screams from the entire plane, only intensifying when Katherine felt a lurching motion as the plane began to fall from the sky, the G-forces pinning her into her seat.
Everything that happened next seemed to be a blur. Bolts of lightning briefly illuminated the cabin, people screaming with hands in the air, loose items flying around the cabin. As Katherine looked around, she gasped as there was another bolt of lightning, just giving her a view of the bag heading straight for her head, giving her no time to dodge before it struck her, knocking her out entirely, her final thought one of resigning herself to her fate rather than trying to uselessly fight it like everyone else onboard seemed to be deluding themselves into doing.
When Katherine awoke she was rather groggy, her vision a little blurred for a few moments. When it finally cleared and she looked up and around, she found herself still on the plane. A second later though, through the pounding pain in her head, confusion set in. She was on the plane, and it seemed to be intact, but nobody else was here. Bags were scattered everywhere, a food cart tipped over nearby, it was like every single person on the plane had completely vanished besides her. "What in the world...?" Katherine turned her head to look out of the window, water being the first thing she saw. "Water...? Ah...looks shallow...I can see the sand...the plane must be sitting on it" She slowly looked up a bit, seeing an island right by the plane, somehow they must have either crashed or washed up in the shallows of the island. Had everyone else left already and gone there? Maybe they'd left her behind thinking she was dead. Right now it was the only thing that made sense. "Ok...come on girl, you can do this" Slowly, with shaking hands, Katherine reached for her seatbelt, taking several attempts to grip it before finally tugging and unfastening it. Even then, it was several more seconds before she could bring herself to begin standing, slowly, carefully, daring not to move too much. It took another few deep breaths, before Katherine started to move away from her seat, into the aisle and further up the plane. The same eeriness was everywhere, signs of people, but no actual people. Oddly when she got to the door of the plane it was still closed, she would have thought it would be left open, why bother closing it after all?
Opening the door took some considerable effort, though finally the emergency handles gave and she was able to push the door open, unfortunately falling out of the plane in the process. Fortunately for her, the use of the emergency handles had triggered the inflation of the emergency ramp as well, giving her a soft landing as she slid down into the shallow water, coughing a little as she got up. "Wait....if that thing just came out, then nobody opened it before? Where in the hell did everyone go?" Katherine surveyed the plane slowly, it seemed more or less intact. A few scorch marks, presumably from the lightning strikes, and the nose cone seemed all but crushed from the impact whilst crashing, but otherwise in one piece. That both reassured and further confused the poor girl as to what had happened.
"Well, no point in just standing here...I wont figure anything out doing that" Turning around, Katherine began to move through the shallow water and up onto the shore of the island. If she could find some footprints then she could find where the rest of the passengers had gone.
