Scene 1: Winter 13th, 913 – Day Time
Kendra was proud of herself. A little upset, its true. Because all that snow falling. All that freezing wind. Greyhall was a cold place during winter too. What place is not cold during winter? But she got a little grumpy after travelling weeks in order to reach a small village lost to the world. “Haygrove my ass!” – the young girls mumbles to herself. The caravan master said that Haygrove was the end of the line. That would be fine, if the gods damned convent wasn’t three miles away from the damned village.
She adjusts the blanket over her back and glances back. She is sitting at a cart, over a pile of bags and crates, while the old man pulls the cart as a mule. “These hilly billies ARE mules.” – Kendra thinks to herself. From the place she chosen, she sits backyards, not facing the way ahead, but the village getting distant and distant as they climb more and more the Purehill. The view is nice, but the idea of been stuck on a convent, full of nuns around her, nearby a small village is a terrible thought.
Once again, she remembers how the caravan master told her to walk. Walk is not one of her best traits. Luckily, Eddinard was there, with his cart, ready to help. “Men are so fool!” – once again she mutters. Nothing a well placed wink and a handjob on the wilderness could not solve. And Eddinard got happy enough to climb the hill taking the little princess to her destination.
Kendra squeezes her eyes, as the man stops the cart. Looking back, she gets spooked and cannot help herself, except rise on cart’s top and behold. The convent was a solid stone building, full of slits and a few windows placed here and there. She sees arcs on many points of the architecture, as the two levels buildings extended next to an abyss. Kendra jumps from the cart and she can see the man door opening. She gets curious, risking just a few steps, up to Eddinard’s side, as she realizes there is a little door opening framed over the main door.
“Guess the old ladies are too much lazy to open the large one!” – she says playful. Eddinard smiles to her under his hood. The old man looks to be a nice guy. He answers: “You are about to start a new life. Need to find another coin to buy your travel tickets, lady!”. Kendra rolls her eyes and moves forward to the door. Foot after foot, struggling against the snow.
At the door, Kendra finds a woman standing. Her blue eyes cold as the snow looking down to the young candidate, who cannot avoid the chills. “I am Mother Superior Mariella. Be glad I am here to meet you, young lady! Obedience is important here. Hope you understand this. I don’t care what you have done on your previous life. As soon you be accepted in this sisterhood, your life will change forever and your past will be forgotten. This IF you be accepted.” Kendra tries to pick anything she would say to break the ice. But she couldn’t. Hard to admit, but the old lady, around her 50’s, a severe face and her cold blue eyes intimidated her at the point to be speechless. “Come in. Novices Dollanda and Ninare are waiting. Ask for help to one of them and she will prepare you to the interview and the Purity Rite. After that, we will decide about your fate.” – The woman moves from the door, vanishing into the dark hall inside. Kendra risks moving up the stairs and looking inside.
From the door, she may see in the dark hall two nuns standing. One at each side of the hall. To the left, Kendra sees a petite girl, as young as herself, both hands inside her habit’s sleeves. She looks placid, calm, balanced, but also unable to look directly to the new arrived, preferring check the convent’s floor than facing Kendra. To Kendra’s right there was a much more aged woman, perhaps on her 30’s, and black eyes, patient but a little sad. She nods to Kendra when faced, just there, waiting to check if will be upon her the responsibility on preparing Kendra.
The postulate removes the blanket and sighs, knowing there was a decision to make ahead. She notices as both nuns get uncomfortable to her dress - both sides open, revealing much of her legs and her bold cleavage. There was an irony on that scene. The courtesan becomes nun. “Could nuns become courtesans?” – Kendra thinks to herself, trying to pick a guide.
