Is it just me, or does anyone else share this view? (Concerning the word SMUT)

SMUT

I hate that f$#&ing word...
for some reason I associate it with low quality pornographic content
it feels like a pejorative, an insult that is readily thrown around with abandon to describe anything with an erotic component...

Am I alone here?

Smut to me is anything that lacks finesse or artistic talent.

Someone random: "I want to write/photograph/imagine/whatever Smut."

Me: "Not worth my time"

Allow me to clarify. Most of the request threads I see in here asking for smut do not fall under my definition of Smut, they have thought out plot lines (even if they are less involved) they have defined characters, and have something in mind they want not the usual chat room/ random instant messages that are all bots.

Example:

Bot/smut seller: "Hi"

Receiver: "Um Hi who are you?"

Bot: "I'm horny"

Receiver: "And?"

Bot: "Come click on this link."

^ THAT is smut. Smut is shamelessness and not being able to value the form of art it can take. That is the difference between eroticism and Smut to me at least. Most users here on BMR have their own variations and ideas as to what Smut constitutes I personally feel that if there is any form of art involved tasteful or otherwise then it shouldn't be defined as smut. Another example is in magazines. Playboy for instance is artistic, sure they show everything and have articles. This is different compared to a magazine full of women spreading themselves open for an internal shot (which can still be art) as opposed to another magazine full of nothing but penetration and repetitive images that just look like a thrown together mess for the sake of getting off.

Well I guess it depends on your personal relationship with and interpretation of sex and intimacy, I spose.

Smut to me sounds like a furry term.

So I'm not the only one? Phew...

I don't know, I always liked Erotica, till 50shades of Gray ruined that

How did Fifty Shades ruin that for you? It's not like all the erotica genre was great until just that one series came along. There are books that seem more like cheap porn than 50 Shades. Go on Goodreads, click on the erotica section, and you'll see what I mean.

Smut is dirtysex. No plot, no point, no meaning, just vulgar embrace of animal rutting instinct.

Which isn't always a bad thing.

For me, people who just come in and do nothing but sex stuff with no characters or anything else, thats cybering.

Smut to me is a RP where nothing but their characters do sexual shit all the time. I don't care how much thought they put into the background or set up. If all they do through the whole thing is non-stop sex shit that is smut.

Thats all it is. But thats to me~

@ Try :: Not really into that for an entire RP. Now if we are talking real life...thats another story.

I always thought that smut meant more-sex-than-story focus. The whole dirty meaningless pointless plotless sex sort of roleplays makes me think of Cybering. :S

You're thinking of 'yiff'!

I know the term yiff, but smut sounds like another furry word lol.

Smut seems to me to sort of express a carnal leaning towards sex, now that I think about it.

Like a romance novel can have smut, even though by archetypal standards it'd be considered out of place. I don't really think smut has a bearing on the entire medium??

Oh I know, but it used to be this open thing, not one first reminder for almost everyone, now, whenever Erotica gets mentioned 50shades will pop up almost inmediately...

At least on the places I have been

When ppl say Smut I look at them as if they're speaking another language. Bit seriously, what can we just say sex? Like, is sex a bad word? But noo, we be like just smut. Wtf.

I have to differ with the majority opinion here. Smut, porn, lemon, raunchy story, PWP... At least to me, they are pretty interchangeable. I don't associate any connotation one way or another with these words.

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=smut

well that is interesting.

Imo porn is visual only and smut is literature only.

how do I personally feel about it? It's word porn, no story or hacked together story, maybe a quick character intro description of setting. And then right into it. Maybe 2-3 posts from each party before the panties drop.

Words mean different things, to different people, and definitions evolve over time. At one point I might have agreed with Pazzo's original post regarding its definition I've pretty much some to see it as shorthand for adult content.

Dealing with many people who don't know English as a first language I've come to ignore most of the conceptions I have of words and their definitions and go with context.

For me it is just a slang term for sex. If I were to read into it though I do feel it has a low brow sound to it.

I don't associate the word Smut with Erotic for example.

In real life it's an amazing thing.

Writing wise? Nah.
