It was a burning hot day and Ashley just had to pick this day to get lost. The twenty-four year old had earlier broken up with her boyfriend of ten years and as a sort of ushering in a new phase in her life, she had decided to go on a bagpacking trip around her neighbouring states. Having lived a pretty sheltered life in North Carolina all her life, most of her friends were shocked by her sudden decision and had attempted to dissuade her from it, but she was determined. The bagpacking trip started off well, with Ashley trekking most of her way around, sometimes even hitchhiking with truckers, but now she found herself getting sick of not having a proper bed to sleep in, not a proper place to stay.
Currently she found herself in Florida, during the hottest summer. It was her last stop before she headed back home, and wanting to save enough money to upgrade her plane ticket to a business class, as a reward to herself for having completed the trip, she decided she was going to foot it all the way to the airport. The route from the motel that she had stayed at to the airport didn't seem all that far away, but apparently she had taken a wrong turning and was now on a some deserted mountain road that didn't seem to have any road signs or anything. Annoyed with herself, she completely gave up on her idea of saving money and decided she was going to go find a payphone and call a taxi. Unfortunately there wasn't even a payphone in sight.
Finally, Ashley saw a house just further down the road. Thanking her lucky stars, she mustered the last spurt of energy and hurried over to the house. Even entering the cool shade of the patio felt like a blessing to her at this point. She was perspiring profusely, and could feel her tank top sticking to her shirt in a disgusting fashion. If the owners of the house turned out to be a nice sort of family, perhaps she might even ask for a bath, but Ashley daren't get her hopes that high. She rapped on the door and waited for some time, hoping really hard that the owner was at home.
