As beautiful as the sight of the sun vanishing was, it also meant for anyone traveling on the roads of Japan that it would be wise to seek shelter out. Alas, twenty-one year old Hitsuki Takeda was no exception to this rule. If anything, he perhaps applied to it even more so than most other people. Not to say he was a bad man or anything, heavens no. But many people tended to believe that from a simple glance at him and the swords attached to his side.

"The concern is valid enough I suppose," he mused softly to himself, nodding after thinking it over a few moments.

The day was ... hm. What was today anyways? It was difficult to figure such things out, especially while one traveled so often from place to place like Hitsuki did. However, from what he could quickly guess, he was pretty sure it was the middle of September, leaning towards early October of 1868. The Meiji era had almost literally just begun, and with it's arrival, there were supposed to be promises of many new beginnings for everyone in Japan.

And yet, from all that Hitsuki had seen, not everyone accepted this. In fact, there were a good number of radicals who wanted things to remain the same, those who sought to continue the needless bloodshed. It was a shame, really. There was never a need for it. There was definitely no point in trying to initiate a needless war, that was for damn sure. Japan had seen more than enough of it's share of blood, be it in the past or present.

"No need to repeat history," he muttered softly, moving a few raven strands of hair away from his eyes as a gentle breeze danced along his flesh and locks.

Among the sun vanishing, he could feel the temperature beginning to drop. If now wasn't the best time to find an inn or somewhere to stay ... well ... hell if he knew the best time to find a place to remain in for the night.

Thankfully, a nearby sign ahead hinted that Kyoto wasn't too far away. A soft sigh mingled in with the wind as his pace seemed to quicken. The ability to stay warm and have a fresh meal sounded very good right about now and he was more than ready to earn that.

He didn't have the most in terms of currency. But ... he had managed to find some rather reasonable people on his journey thus far. Maybe his luck would continue?

Only time would soon tell, Hitsuki figured.

Golden light spilled forth over the horizon one last time...painting the world in its vibrant color, before leaving to allow navy blue to invade. Shopkeepers began closing for the day, their last customers lingering before heading back home. A number of children ceased playing in the streets, having been called by their mothers or their fathers to return home. Overall…it was a peaceful ending to a rather uneventful day… at least, that was the case for many people within the walls of Kyoto.

“Oh no… Mistress Riku is going to be angry if I’m late with supper again…” came a worried whisper. Several glances went in the girl’s direction, numerous quickly darting away. Most of the people within Kyoko knew who she was, and didn’t cross paths with the young woman… not because of her demeanor, but rather because of her status as a ‘slave’.

Slaves were not common in this day and age...but every once in a while, one would come across a person who did own a slave or two. It was a sad existence, really...for that slave has to follow their master’s orders, no matter what the task may be...no matter what risk may come, or danger onto themselves. This particular slave’s name was Hitomi… Hitomi Fukuyama. A sickly child, she was abandoned by her parents when barely six months old… or rather, not simply abandoned, but left upon a doorstep.

From that moment on, Hitomi was a slave to Riku Kotabe’s whims...whether they be silly, or otherwise. Ever since she could walk, talk, and think for herself, she has followed the woman’s orders...not that she hasn’t thought about the concept of freedom. In fact… it has crossed her mind several times over the years. Where would she go, though? Who could she rely on, during her time of need? There was also the possibility of Mistress Riku tracking her down, even when free and beyond her grasp...

The fact of the matter is...there is no way Hitomi could escape her clutches. There was no possible way to obtain freedom, at least...none that she could think of. Her hands holding onto the shopping bags ever tighter, she hurried her way down the street, not bothering to look at the surrounding area. After all… she knew Kyoto like the back of her hand.

Of course, what Hitomi didn’t anticipate was that someone would be walking into the designated path she chose to take...and so, a collision was inevitable. Hard muscle met soft curves, and with a startled cry, Hitomi fell to the ground with a hard thump. The bag of rice tore, grains littering the road, while other things began to either roll away...or make some sort of escape.

“Ow, ow, ow…” Hitomi found that half a dozen places hurt, and rubbing the back of her head, sending several black threads of hair flowing down over her exposed shoulders. The collision had loosened the kimono she was wearing...making it to where a great deal of skin was revealed, inappropriate and otherwise. One golden eye opened, pain filling the orb and painting it a darker hue.

Hitomi began looking around nervously. “Did I really hit someone…?” she wondered out loud, unaware that she was sitting on top of the young man involved in said collision, in fact… straddling his lap. “I don’t see anyone, though…”

Entering Kyoto had been an easy enough task. Navigating it, however, was a different story. He had heard many various stories about this city, some good and some not so much. The history had intrigued him and soon Hitsuki found himself zoning out, seeming to look at everything and nothing in particular all at once. Various flashbacks began to enter his own mind as his former hometown of Nagasaki came to his head. It brought a smile to his face though it quickly turned into a slight frown. There had been many massacres there over the years thanks to an array of radicals who wanted chaos to still linger through not only Nagasaki but Japan itself. The day those very people emerged and let themselves be known was the same one that Hitsuki took up the path of a swordsman.

His duties had started out with him being a simple mercenary. Whomever gave him the most currency, he would do whatever they asked of him. That could range from an escort mission to an assassination one. Not to say Hitsuki was ever proud of taking a life. But there really were times when it was practically inevitable. Even now, this seemed to hold true. Thankfully, he hadn't needed to use such measures in a few good years; about two or three if he had to guess.

The abrupt sensation of bumping into one of the citizens, however, made Hitsuki fall onto his back. Normally, he had much better balance. But in times like this, well ... his coordination tended to be horrible. His own eyes soon found him gazing at a very young woman, maybe sixteen or seventeen at the absolute youngest. But she was definitely a young adult, if even one at all.

"My deepest apologies, Miss." he finally greeted, bowing his own head slightly to her. "Here ... hm. Let me help."

Sitting up - all while not moving her off of his lap - he began to gather the fallen groceries and place them back into the bag. The sight of the opened up rice bags made him frown. Those would be some of the hardest items to replace, no doubt. In fact ... they may not be able to even be dealt with until the morning.

"I can accompany you and explain you're not at fault if you wish. I should have been watching my step as opposed to zoning out, after all. It's the least I can do."

Well ... there were probably a few more ideas that he could have suggested. But if there were any, none were coming to Hitsuki's mind. His eyes lingered upon the golden ones across from him for a few moments before going back to assisting with packing the groceries into the bag once more.

"Ah! I...I appreciate the offer, but...you really don't need to go out of your way for me..." Hitomi has never seen such a beautiful man, in all her years. Most would not use the word 'beautiful' when it comes to the opposite gender, but...she didn't think 'handsome' or 'gorgeous' fit quite right. His hair was a long, luxurious black...and his eyes, an amber she could melt into, if she wanted. There were subtle hints of muscles under that kimono...not that she was looking or anything...and his manner may be polite, but there was also... a note of something to his words, one she couldn't quite name. Realizing that she was staring, Hitomi jumped up, her own kimono falling to lay where it will. The obi was loose around her waist...making the folds of the kimono loose about her slender frame. Unbeknownst to the teenager, she was revealing quite a bit of cleavage...and much more than that, really.

Dark, golden eyes swirling with embarrassment lifted, watching as the stranger began to gather the fallen groceries and place them back into the bag. Nothing could be done about the torn rice bags, that much she knew for certain...but she also knew what sort of punishment awaited her at home if she didn't bring rice. Her cheeks dusted a light, rosy shade of pink, she bent down, picking up various things and placing them back into the bag as well. "I...I appreciate your thoughtfulness, though..." she murmured at last, biting her lip and trying not to look -or seem- foolish.

Hitomi gathered what was left of the rice, and placed both in the bag along with the rest of her groceries. I really do appreciate the thought...but no matter what, I will be punished...for both ruining dinner, and inconveniencing this handsome young man... she thought, a wave of dread washing through her body at the memory of her last beating. To say it was painful was a drastic understatement...for she was just now recovering from that particular punishment, and it happened over a month ago. "It really is a shame I can't go and replace these before I head home..." she murmured under her breath, a look coming over her features. There was dread etching itself into the color of her eyes, and in the way her lips were curved... yet, something else was there, too.

Everything back in the bags, Hitomi picked them both up, and gave the stranger a polite bow. "Thank you for all you have done, perhaps I could repay you in some way?" she offered, glancing up at him through a veil of black. All that was playing along her features earlier was gone, and was now replaced with a distinct air of nerves.

It would be nice to repay his kindness...even if it was in some small way. Nibbling on her bottom lip, making the flesh darken until it was more red than pink, Hitomi lifted herself up from the bow, and ran both hands over her kimono. The sun gave out one last, brilliant wave of light... orange, pink and green playing over the nearest buildings, the people lingering in the streets, over the girl's kimono and features...right as it dipped down below the horizon. Those golden eyes of hers rose after a minute or so, indecision still there in those lovely depths.

Night fell quickly after that little display of color, casting the world into darkness. Hitomi blinked, her eyes trying to adjust to the darkness, only to recognize the nearest buildings. "Ah, I should have brought a light with me..." she spoke, letting out a soft, almost musical laugh. Her fingers curling into the folds of her kimono, she tried to swallow past the lump in her throat. Fear started clawing its way into it, however... making it hard to breathe.

As a child, Hitomi was often punished...either with vicious beatings, or being locked away in a dark room. That last punishment could last anywhere between a few hours...or several days, depending on how angry Riku was. Even now, she fears the dark...for it reminds her of such times. Her smile awkward, forced, she met his gaze... waiting for whatever answer he has to give, at the offer of repaying his kindness.

Hitsuki couldn't help but raise an eyebrow and chuckle softly. If she had thought this was going out of his way ... he was amused on what would have truly counted as such an action. Usually, people suggested others were doing too much with things like getting expensive gifts, especially when there was no real motive save for the hell of it. Things like that were understandable ones that Hitsuki would agree were a bit more than usual. But what he'd just done? That was common courtesy .. wasn't it?

His instincts began to slowly click as the thought of something wrong going on registered into his mind. Yet, his eyes and face showed no hints that he already began to realize this. Instead, they kept a calm and collected expression as she assisted Hitomi picking up everything that was able to be put away in one piece. He couldn't help but glance back at the grains of rice every now and again, hating that there truly was no way to save that.

One of the few times Hitsuki looked back up to the young woman, he finally noticed her chest and .. almost everything else that was slowly becoming exposed to him. Clearing his throat - and waiting to make sure she finished putting away whatever grocery she had been holding - Hitsuki gave her a soft nod. "I figured you would want to fix that, yes?" he offered, finally getting up to his feet and taking some of the bags into his arms.

Clearly, he wouldn't easily take no for an answer. Especially when she definitely needed assistance. And if his guess was right, it would be with much more than some mere food she was trying to return home.

His instincts and thoughts only seemed to strengthen as he saw, with peripheral vision to check up on Hitomi, the look of sheer fear in her eyes. That hadn't just come from nowhere and it certainly hadn't been from him.

I doubt she's randomly reacting this way. What from, though, I want to find out.

"Yes, there is a way," he began upon hearing the offer. It was, however, not at all likely to be anything she would have guessed. Or if it was, Hitomi had better skills with reading people than Hitsuki had originally thought. "Let me help you bring these back, at least. Even if I don't speak on your behalf, I would love to see where you reside. In fact, I'll pay whoever is in charge since I am technically looking for somewhere to stay for the night."

Added onto the look of anxiety was the sight of her biting gently on her lower lip. That was definitely a nervous tick; he knew because that was one he did every now and again. So, if she was doing that, the expression he had seen in her eyes was not his imagination. No, that was very much .. accurate.

"I can still see pretty well. Just give me directions and I can lead us." he offered, taking the opportunity to watch the last bits of the sun fade away, giving in and letting the darkness begin to creep over Kyoto.

Of course, at first...Hitomi didn’t understand what the stranger meant, when he said… ‘fix that’. It happens to the best of people, not understanding something right at that very moment...or needing to run it through their head first, before giving an answer. For some, it will take a little while...and for others, just a millisecond. Hitomi...blinked, her eyes dropping down to see what he could possibly be talking about...and those golden eyes widened with realization. Dark red blooming along her cheeks, she quickly fixed the problem, and tightened her obi and adjusted the folds of her kimono. “U-Um… I… I-I’m sorry…” she whispered, embarrassed beyond words.

Dark red painting the girl’s cheeks, nose, and even the tips of her ears, Hitomi noticed that he had taken some of the bags into his arms. Clearly, he wouldn’t take no for an answer...at least, not easily. Her mouth opened, about to protest...when the silence was finally broken. “There...There is?” she asked, eyes widening slightly and looking up at him. Their heights were six inches separate, him almost towering over her...though she didn’t feel scared, standing in his shadow. “What can I do-?” His next words caused her question to be cut off, and for shock to make an appearance.

‘Let me help you bring these back, at least…? I would love to see where you reside…?’ Hitomi started nibbling on her lip, a nervous habit she picked up over the years, though most of the time she didn’t notice when she’s doing it. A hand lifted to play with a few black strands of hair, a pink bow perched on top of her head keeping most of the hair out of her face and at bay. Torn with indecision...she finally lifted her gaze, those golden eyes meeting his, various emotions swirling within the depths.

Hitomi could tell it was no use talking him out of it. This stranger was a stubborn one, chivalrous and sweet, and though it was touching...she didn’t want him to see any of the ugliness of her life. A soft, inaudible sigh leaving her lips, the girl nodded, adjusting her grip on the bags she had. “My home is not too far from here…” she murmured under her breath, turning her bag to him, gesturing down the road. “I cannot… I cannot see well in the dark, so… I will give you the directions, and if you could, please...just...just lead me there.”

People lingered in doorways, light spilling out onto the street while they watched the scene unfold. No one offered to help, nor did anyone speak any words of kindness. In fact… there were quite a few pairs of eyes that were anything but friendly. Hitomi paid these gazes no mind, instead heading down the street, back straight, and her expression blank. While her face gave nothing away… terrifying images began to play within her mind, each one worse than the last.

I just hope that Riku will take this in stride, and at least wait on my punishment until he leaves…

It was a simple enough wish, however...the chances of it happening were slim. Riku was a cool, sweet hostess to anyone who comes knocking on her door...and yet when that door does close, that temper takes over. The sweet words are replaced with cruel, biting ones… and there was no escape, not for Hitomi. It didn’t help that Riku reminded her of this often, saying that she must repay her kindness with servitude, seeing as how she took in the infant when she could have easily just left her out in the cold.

Hitomi blinked, returning to the present when her foot slipped on a rock. Luckily she managed to catch her balance easily enough, and glanced to her left and right. “We must go to our right...at the first intersection,” she relayed, unable to see whether or not they had reached it yet or not. After adjusting the bags in her hand, she reached out towards his arm, politely hanging onto his elbow.

One right turn, and a left several feet down, and the two arrived at their destination. Hitomi didn’t bother knocking on the door, instead removing her shoes and entering with a bow of her head. “I’m home…” she announced, resisting the instinct to cringe. The bags rustled with every move she made...and it was because of this noise that she did not hear the other woman approach. Her muscles immediately tensed at Riku’s cool voice...and the cold current underlying the innocent words.

“I see you brought a guest with you.” Riku’s cold blue eyes gazed from one person to the next, her lips curving into a smile. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, sir… My name is Kotabe Riku, and...you are?”

Hitsuki gave a small smile, figuring no amount of words would be able to help calm this young maiden. Moreover, hm ... how to mentally explain it to himself. It wasn't that they didn't mean anything to her. But she seemed almost .. unable to accept them? Probably. She was definitely appearing to have a difficult time with taking his offers, be it for help or just simply making small talk. That was when he began to try to replay how they had met, wondering if he had almost failed to notice any specific details.

It did happen so quickly. Had she been in a rush? She definitely almost sounds like she is in one now to get back. The sun just vanished too so ... it doesn't sound like the reason is because it's too late. But maybe tardiness is an issue somehow?

While Hitsuki realized there was always the chance he was simply thinking way too much, he didn't feel that was true. There were few, if any, times his instincts had ever failed him. The initial thoughts on something being wrong with this picture continued to strengthen. Yet, he also resumed keeping these hints away from his face or eyes. Hitomi clearly had more than enough to worry about. There was no sense in adding more onto her plate.

His head bowed politely to Hitomi upon hearing her ask if he would lead her. "Of course. It'd do me no good to mislead you, anyway."

Gently, he placed a hand upon her shoulder, never letting it slide down towards an uncomfortable spot. He took slow, cautious steps, making certain to follow her instructions. Thankfully, Hitsuki had always been a fast learner. All the same, he had never once been in Kyoto before. It was one of those cities that despite it's dark history, he had been intrigued with it regardless. Many would probably consider him an idiot for wanting to go to such a place. Yet, the rumors of its typical traditions were part of what made it all the more intriguing and began to make him wonder more and more on why Hitomi seemed so ... uneasy.

It wasn't as common as it used to be, but Hitsuki did hear that slavery was still practiced in Japan. Hell, he used to be one himself. So even though many tried to keep the practice very hush-hush, he knew it wasn't a rumor at all but the very cold and harsh truth.

As Hitsuki began to guide Hitomi, the feeling of eyes upon them was almost instantly felt. Sure enough, as he glanced up while still helping escort Hitomi, he saw for himself that many people were staring yet refusing to help out.

Hm ... and why is that the case?

The looks in the other citizens' eyes all but screamed they definitely knew something. If he didn't know much better - and perhaps he didn't - Hitsuki almost felt as if he were doing something very taboo.

Ah well. Things would get cleared up soon enough.

Hitsuki glanced down to see that Hitomi had gently taken a hold of his elbow. Taking the cue, his hand slid off her shoulder and moved beside her so she could better grasp it.

Soon enough, they came to what one could assume to be where Hitomi resided, becoming soon clarified after she announced her arrival. As Hitomi took her shoes off, Hitsuki followed suit with his sandals. His swords lightly bumped against his sides as he followed close beside the young girl.

And finally ... she came into view. The first thing Hitsuki noticed were those icy blue hues that almost seemed to try to pierce through him and gaze at his soul. If she had given him that impression from the get-go .. Hitsuki had few doubts that this was likely to be the source of Hitomi's uneasiness. For now though, he would play the gentleman card, as it were. There would otherwise be no sense in causing any unneeded chaos, especially if his thoughts were indeed wrong.

"Takeda Hitsuki. A pleasure to meet you as well. I accidentally ran into Miss Hitomi seconds after entering Kyoto. I was wondering if I could pay you to remain here for at least the night, by chance? I know you're not an inn and I apologize. But most of the establishments have signs hinting they're closed, booked, or in the worst case both."

He went silent, holding his wrists behind his back while patiently awaiting to hear Riku's reply. All the while, he watched Hitomi out of the corner of his eye, trying to note her reactions to everything going on around her.

Riku Kotabe was a beautiful young woman. Tall, slender and petite, there was no denying such an obvious fact. Her hair is a long, luxurious black, her eyes pieces of topaz set within delicate features. The purple kimono she wore did nothing to hide her figure...and yet, it was tastefully done. Light played along her face...bringing out little details a person would not notice upon first glance. For instance...her lips were full, sinfully so...and a light pink color most men would find irresistible. Her fingers brushed over the kimono she had on, while she considered her words carefully.

“Ah… so you ran into Hitomi, just seconds after entering Kyoto? Fate must have brought you here,” Riku told him, voice warming by gradual degrees. “To stay the night, there is no need for you to pay. We have an extra room, so it is no trouble at all to dust it out, before you settle in for the night…” Riku tilted her head while giving him a smile, hands folded delicately in front of herself. There was a sophisticated air about the young woman, which spoke volumes about the sort of lifestyle she was used to.

Hitomi could practically feel the hostility boiling underneath the surface, it poisoning the air like a noxious gas. It was choking the poor girl, making it to where she could not speak, or move, for that matter. Her lips stretched into a thin smile, she bent her head, black falling over her shoulders and their very ends almost touching the floor. “Mistress… We ran into each other quite literally...so I am afraid dinner has to be delayed… I managed to save all but the rice,” she informed the other woman, muscles rigid while images of what the punishment will be ran through her mind once again.

One moment became two...and Hitomi kept her position, expecting a slap, a shout… anything but what really happened. Instead of anger...she felt a hand stroke the top of her head, almost gently. Her eyes shot open, the pupils dilating while a fresh wave of fear poured throughout her body.

“It couldn’t be helped. The bags must have torn when you two...collided, so of course you could not save it,” Riku cooed, continuing to pet the top of her head. Every stroke caused revulsion and fear to sink ever deeper into Hitomi’s bones...especially when a finger tucked under her chin, lifting her head up until their eyes met. Topaz blue met gold...and with as well as Hitomi knew her mistress, she could see fury boiling deep within the depths. “Calm yourself… Why not you cook what you can, and after we have dinner...you air out that room for Takeda-san, hm?” Almost trembling at this point, Hitomi felt that same hand pat at her cheek...clearly dismissing the girl, at least for now. It was a huge relief to be out of her presence...especially given the circumstances.

With another quick bow, Hitomi retreated from the room...feeling daggers in her back as she did. In the kitchen, she took a moment to simply breathe...to get her nerves under control, before putting away the groceries. A chill had fallen over her skin, making goosebumps appear along her arms, and causing her stomach to feel like...very strange. Every move was tight, nervous...her hands trembling while she moved about, and there was an expression upon her face that gave it all away.

Mistress Riku must truly be angry, if she’s acting as though she cares about me… Hitomi lingered in the kitchen for far longer than what was necessary...and after summoning the courage, she began going through the cabinets to see what could be made for supper. There wasn’t much...however, with what little rice they had, and the groceries she just bought… she could make Kaiseki Ryori. It’d show off her culinary skills...not that she was trying to, but at least he will have a wonderful meal before he leaves.

Takeda Hitsuki… so that is his name. Did I ever introduce myself…? Hitomi couldn’t remember, and it was embarrassing that she couldn’t.

Meanwhile, Riku lead their guest into the living room area, and gestured for him to take a seat. “I must apologize for the mess… I was not expecting guests.” There was no mess to take note of, in fact...it was very neat, very tidy. Riku took a seat herself, both hands running over the purple kimono she had on, while she presented him with a smile. “I usually do not receive visitors… besides the ones who seek my advice, or are personal friends of mine…”

A moment of silence fell between the two, not so much awkward...but rather, tentative, seeing as they were still strangers.

Hitomi broke the awkward moment, however, by walking into the room with a small tray. “It… It isn’t much, but… I thought we could start dinner with drinks…” she hesitantly said, sparing a glance towards her mistress before setting the tray down between them. On it was two small cups, filled with sweet wine.

“Shokuzen-shu,” Hitomi murmured this time. Of course she hadn’t poured herself a glass, for Mistress Riku would not approve. While she did not drink often, Riku valued the alcohol highly in her house...and drank on special occasions. Hopefully… Hopefully she won’t be too angry about having some tonight. Keeping her head down, and a shadow falling over her eyes, she offered a glass first to Hitsuki...and then to Riku.

After swallowing the lump in her throat, Hitomi lifted her gaze...the light glinting off the golden pair, and making the pools appear as though molten. “I will be bringing out...some… some appetizers in about...ten minutes...maybe fifteen… so ah...please be patient with me…” Once she bowed, she lifted up onto her knees, before climbing onto her feet fully. Her colorful kimono fell about her curvaceous figure, making it to where nothing was left to the imagination. The colors brought out the color of her eyes and hair...while the cut of it did nothing but make her feel...less.

Hitomi returned to the kitchen, and began chopping various vegetables and meat. The appetizers were not going to be elaborate, by any stretch of the word, more than anything, they were just going to be bite-sized morsels served on a hassun. Her cuts clean and efficient, fast and precise, she had the appetizers ready within ten minutes. The main course won’t take much effort on her part, however...she decided to serve the appetizers now, to ward off the hunger setting in.

“I-I brought appetizers…” Hitomi announced, reentering the room with her head ducked down. “I-I’m sorry it isn’t much, but… I thought it would be a nice treat, while I am preparing the meal itself…” The hassun was set down between both Hitsuki and Riku, revealing an assortment of delicacies.

"It very well could be, yes. Regardless, I'm grateful to have found a place to remain in during the night. It was beginning to get cold and I'm willing to guess it would have gotten much worse before better."

All the while, Hitsuki continued to monitor Hitomi, especially during her exchange with Riku. She was very tense. Hitsuki could practically see her muscles contract. The same hints of fear and anxiety only seemed to strengthen, becoming even simpler to see in her eyes. Clearly, there was something going on in this household. And even if it would have been in his interest to stay out of it, Hitsuki got the nagging sensation that would be a much easier said than done task to accomplish. It was ... some sort of curse that had no doubt been put on him. Maybe it was an odd form of revenge from his former Master for escaping from him? Regardless, whenever someone was in trouble, Hitsuki almost always found himself assisting even when it was definitely not his place to do so.

Right now, Hitomi needed ... something. He couldn't yet pinpoint the exact details. But there was definitely something there. Everything would likely be revealed in due time, he decided.

For now, he would focus on the here and now. Besides, on the off-chance he was wrong, Hitsuki would merely enjoy his stay. It wouldn't be right to intervene without seeing any proof that something was amiss. Until then, he would try to stay out of whatever conflict may be in this house.

"Thank you, Miss Riku. The free stay is more than appreciated."

Gods knew few places, let alone people, even offered such generosity nowadays. Everyone seemed to want something, even if it wasn't as much as they could have asked for. Still, to find a person who wouldn't demand some coins was definitely a nice change in pace, especially since Hitsuki didn't have the most on himself.

As Hitomi left to prepare dinner, he snuck one last glance towards the young woman before following behind Riku. She was at least doing a good job of seeming like a good hostess. But was that only an act? It'd be another thing that would be revealed in time, he supposed.

A small smile crossed Hitsuki's face as he sat down on his knees. "It's quite alright. I wouldn't ask for any perfection. Besides, you're giving me more than enough. So, if I may inquire, do you have any line of work or hobby you specialize in, Miss Riku?"

As Hitomi entered and set down the sake, his head bowed in appreciation. "Itadekimasu," he murmured in reply, offering Hitomi a reassuring grin as he looked up to her eyes. "Take as long as you need. No sense in forcing yourself to rush then ruining the meal. I can be patient when needed."

For a while, Hitsuki allowed the silence to embrace him. It took a lot to genuinely make him nervous and he wasn't quite at that point yet. If anything, he felt very calm and at peace, both before and while drinking the sake. Gently clasping the small cup, he placed it against his lips and took a small sip, savoring the sweet alcoholic drink.

"I haven't had any this sweet in a while. This is very good."

His head bowed again as the appetizers were put down. He didn't say anything aloud this time, merely smiled again to Hitomi.

She doesn't give herself much if any credit. Hmm ... that's already making the already loud alarms scream and increase in volume.

No woman who knew they were doing well with something would just willingly degrade themselves .. would they? Not likely. The thoughts that something was wrong continued to strengthen as he grabbed one of the treats and began to eat, setting his sake down in the process to save and enjoy it as best as possible.

"I would not say I specialize in any one particular hobby or line of work..." Riku replied in a thoughtful tone, picking up the sweet sake and taking a delicate sip. It was, indeed, one of her more...favored drinks, which meant that Hitomi knew she was in trouble. Her lips parting with a sigh, she set the cup down, and thought over her words carefully.

Hitomi left the room without saying much else, with a light pink blush, no less, and Riku didn't bat an eye or pay any mind to her leaving. "I suppose I can say...that if I had any one particular hobby or line of work... it would involve swords. My father taught my sisters and I when we were very young...for he always longed for sons, rather than daughters...and for myself, well...it stuck. I rather enjoy the weight of the blade in my hand, and I enjoy teaching those who are willing to learn how to defend themselves, should the case ever arise." The woman's smile serene, she took another sip of the sake...its rich, sweet flavor invading her senses for a moment.

The next course came not too long after the appetizers, and these she picked over, taking a sample and nibbling on it before putting it back. It tasted quite good...but never will she give Hitomi that personal satisfaction. Not now, and not in a million years.

While Hitsuki reassured the black-haired beauty (the one with warm golden eyes, not the one with icy blue) to take as long as she needed when it comes to dinner, that there was no sense in rushing with its preparation… Hitomi knew of her mistress’ impatience, and knew better than to keep her waiting. Cold sweat trickling down the back of her neck, soaking into her kimono’s collar and traveling down her spine, she made sure everything was cooked to perfection.

“D-Dinner is served…” Hitomi bent her head, black falling down over her shoulders like molten midnight while the young woman stepped forward.

Hitomi brought out an assortment of dishes, each simple...and yet, the dishes culinary delights even with their simplicity. The suimono was a clear broth, sparingly garnished with seafood...and she experimented with its flavor, so that instead of just tasting the seafood, one would taste garlic, salt, pepper, and a hint of oregano. The otsukuri was thinly sliced raw fish, served on a bed of shredded Japanese radish, with soya sauce and a small amount of wasabi paste. Of course, the girl didn’t know how much would be used of either...and so, brought out a small bowl of each, so that there would be plenty. A lump forming in her throat, mostly out of nerves and fear, she continued putting each dish on the table.

I hope...they like this… Nimono followed the Otsukuri, a dish made by boiling, simmering or stewing vegetables and meat. Tonight, Hitomi decided to simmer it, that way there would be more juices in the meat, and had cooked it all in a mixture of soya sauce, sweet cooking sake, and sugar. Really, all in all...it wasn’t much, but she did hope their guest would like it. What was his name again…? Takeda...Hitsuki? Nervous under all this pressure… Hitomi tried not to appear as such.

Yakimono was next to come, little whimsical curls of steam rising up from the plates of grilled meat. Hitomi knew that it was a bit risky, serving this...given how she was on thin ice as it is, but she did hope it would improve Riku’s mood… perhaps enough to lessen the punishment, even slightly. It was prized Japanese beef...something they did not often partake in, for it was on the expensive side...and yet, it was very delicious.

Riku cast a critical eye over all the food, and found it...satisfactory. It was a good enough meal to serve while a guest was among them, which she thought most important. Her icy blue eyes blank, not revealing any thought she had, Hitomi took that everything was alright. Her lips curving around the edges into a relieved smile, the deep fried dish of their meal was unloaded from the tray, which was revealed to be tempura (seafood and vegetables deep fried in a light flour batter). There was a light dipping sauce for flavor.

The last two dishes were Mushimono and Sunomono. The steamed dish was chawanmushi, a rather savory egg custard Hitomi was particularly fond of, flavored with fish stock and containing small morsels of mushrooms, chicken, ginko nuts and seafood served in a teacup shaped dish. The vinegared dish consisted of vegetables and octopus, dressed in a vinegar based sauce...and served in small, shallow bowls. Head bent, Hitomi finally held onto an empty tray...and the table had a great number of dishes gracing its surface. “H-How does it all look…?” she hesitantly asked, first glancing towards their guest, Hitsuki...and then looking towards Riku.

“It looks fine, dear. Come, sit, eat.” Riku said this rather impatiently, gesturing to take the last remaining seat with a wave of her hand.

Hitomi froze in place, panic written clearly on her features. W-What? I’ve never eaten at the same time she has… M-Maybe this has something to do with...him being here…? Not daring to glance in the man’s direction, she moved delicately over to the proffered seat, and arranged her skirts before doing so.

Gold eyes peeked up through a veil of black, not sure whether or not to wait until Riku takes the first bite...or to just dig in. Hitomi nibbled on her lip nervously, torn with indecision, when… her stomach gave a rather vicious growl, one loud enough for the other two to hear quite clearly.

“Ah! I-I’m sorry!” Embarrassment using a master artist’s brush to paint pink along her features, Hitomi bent her head in apology, with Riku glowering across the way. “I didn’t… I didn’t know… I…” Lost for words, she simply hung her head, hands splayed out underneath the table in her lap, almost expecting something...anything from her mistress. Of course nothing came...however, that didn’t help the knowledge that punishment was to come in the near future. “It is alright, Hitomi… Go ahead and eat. You’re hungry,” Riku said with a forced smile, handing the embarrassed girl a bowl.

"Oh?"

Hitsuki was honestly amused and intrigued to hear Riku's answer. Few women took up the art of sword wielding. It wasn't that none could but rather an old and typically followed tradition. Men usually fought with blades or other various instruments. Even during this new era which was slowly building up, many still practiced the more typical habits. Most women were lovers, the people who made most of the meals, things like that. But in its own way, it was refreshing to hear that there was one woman whom didn't want to keep to the usual routine. Hitsuki had always been an advocate for equality in skills, regardless of gender. So to see someone practicing that in a very risky and unorthodox way was good.

Yet, if she was indeed the main worry in this household, Hitsuki tucked this information away. It would more likely than not help him out later in some form or fashion.

"It's good to hear a woman not be afraid of going against what society deems isn't normal for them. In fact, I'm honestly impressed. Do you prefer any specific type of blade over the other? Wakazashi? Katana? Something else?"

Katanas were by far one of the most common and best blades, be it for killing or self-defense. But .. would she be able to handle them? And he pondered this in terms of her weight versus theirs. Something like a wakazashi would statistically be the simplest for her to hold without straining herself. But if she truly had been given proper training like Riku said, even she could handle katanas. But did she even carry two? Only one? It was answers to these sorts of questions and more which he took note of.

Hm. Most hostesses initiate talks to their guests, not the other way around. Is this something else I should be weary of?

Hitsuki never got to ponder much on the matter as more food was set down. First was suimono, followed by otsukuri, nimono, yakimono, mushimono and even sunomono. His eyes blinked a few times before he gave Hitomi a smile.

"I haven't seen many who can make this much in a short amount of time. You're very gifted with cooking, I see."

Clapping his hands, Hitsuki bowed his head as he gently murmured, "Itadekimasu," before beginning to eat. However, he couldn't help but notice Hitmoi's reaction when she was asked to sit down and eat.

Would she not have been asked this? It almost sounds like she's ... denied meals? Or has to wait for them?

The thought made his blood boil. Just that alone sounded very unjust and unfair. If anything, Hitomi should have gotten the first bite after making all of this food.

Something truly is amiss here.

Yet, that meant nothing still. Not yet. It pained and irked him. Clearly, Hitomi was some sort of victim. But he wouldn't go against his vow. Until this was proven for sure, Hitsuki would remain out of this.

His head bowed in approval as his smile widened. "This is all very good. Thank you." he replied, waiting to speak after finishing chewing and swallowing first. Even if he didn't appear to, the man definitely had manners. Even with the nagging feeling of something not being right here, he wouldn't just up and forget about them. Not yet, at least.

It was rare for women to take up the art of sword wielding...Riku knew that much. Men usually fought, brought food to the table...and provided for the family, while the women stayed at home, and took care of things there. A barbaric way of thinking, in her opinion...an old tradition, which gave women no opportunities...no chance at equality.

Riku took a sip of her sake, using the moment to consider her words carefully. Not many know of her gift with swords...for she knew many would look at her with contempt or disdain upon knowing...but this stranger was but a wanderer, so it did not matter if he knew or not. "I am well trained with the wakazashi and the katana...however, I find myself...partial to the Katate-uchi, or the Uchigatana. I grew up with these blades, and I must say... I probably will not be so familiar with any other."

Hitomi tensed upon hearing, having not expected the conversation to revolve around swords. Her face pale, she kept her head down, and absently brought small morsels of food onto her plate. Appetite gone, she knew it would draw attention onto herself...and so, chose the lesser of the two evils.

Arctic blue eyes lifted, gazing at the young man for a long moment before lowering. Usually, Riku could tell what a person is thinking, based upon what expression they wear -whether it be fake or otherwise-, but this man concealed his emotions well. Takeda Hitsuki was an ideal guest, polite, courteous...at least, on the surface he is. What thoughts lurk underneath the man's exterior however, was a mystery.

"It is...quite pleasing to hear such words coming from one such as you. Not many men would agree with you, that much is certain, or women, for that matter." Riku tasted a tiny piece of grilled meat...its flavor exploding on her tongue, leaving it tingling and wanting more. Of course, she gave no indication of how good it was, merely taking another bite before continuing on with the conversation. "My mother did not want my sisters and I to be taught in the ways of the sword...yet my father thought it best if we learned how to defend ourselves."

There was a tense silence following the words...mostly from Hitomi’s end, but that was to be expected. It was unnerving, hearing all this...especially from who it was speaking. Her dark golden eyes intent on her plate, merely playing with the food on it...it was difficult to find any appetite whatsoever, much less pretend. Shadows dancing along her features, keeping her hidden, at least from Riku’s attention...she tried not to play too much with the food, or else give herself away. When Hitsuki mentioned her culinary skills...it was then that she finally lifted her eyes, curiosity and surprise obvious on the girl’s face.

Was...that a compliment? I’ve never received a compliment, about my food...or about anything I do. It’s certainly… nice… Finding herself blushing, Hitomi quickly diverted her gaze from his, dropping it back onto the plate in front of her. “Th-Thank you…” she managed to answer, the words a little breathless...not to mention there was still a note of surprise hidden among the words.

Black strands of hair fell forward, concealing Hitomi’s eyes, and the pleasure she felt at his words. Riku shot her a glance, a long look following...one that was studying, critical even. It wasn’t long before those icy blue eyes narrowed...which was a silent warning, in any case. Nothing had to be said...nor did a gesture have to be made. Of course, most of the time...none was required.

Hitomi felt the cold stare, and immediately sat up straighter, her shoulders stiffening while she fought to breathe past the lump in her throat.

“I, ah… I plan on bringing out takenoko gohan…miso soup, and tsukemono next…” Hitomi found herself saying, finally working up the nerve to say something. Takenoko gohan was just a fancy term for white rice, with bamboo shoots, and as for tsukemono… it was a small assortment of pickled vegetables. What sort of vegetables, though...she has yet to decide. Perhaps a bit of takuan...and umeboshi?

Riku didn’t bother making a comment, and instead just sipped her sake yet again...using it as a distraction. It will only last for so long...but at least it is working.

Light pink spreading along pale, porcelain skin, Hitomi realized that she must sound like a fool...and bit her lip, nibbling on the flesh. The soft, rosy pink gradually turning into a more rosy red, the girl couldn’t figure out where to keep her gaze...much less what to say next. Of course, such confusion persuaded the blush to turn darker...to spread to unexplored territory.

“If you...If you like, I can also prepare us dessert… perhaps sorbet...or fresh fruit?”

“There is no need,” Riku snapped, the words like a sharp knife. “I am sure...this is more than plenty. You must not over-extend yourself… If we require dessert, I believe we can take care of it ourselves.” Hitomi immediately shut up, her jaw closing with an audible click, and a subdued look in her eyes. Her hands shaking, she quickly dropped her gaze back onto her plate.

A faint smile playing along her lips, Riku tilted her head, black falling over her shoulder while she did so. “I hope you...are enjoying the meal, Takeda Hitsuki. Here in a little while, Hitomi will go ahead and prepare your room for the night.” Hitomi gave a silent nod to confirm the words, not even bothering to speak up.

So she can use blades well enough? Noted. This woman may truly be dangerous.

It wasn't something that Hitsuki often came across. But he wouldn't begin to say that the opposite sex couldn't defend themselves or - in the worst case scenarios - be aggressive against men. Quite the opposite. They were definitely capable. It was just a matter of discipline and willpower. And if one had more than enough of said aspects, even a woman could be on par, if not defeat, some of the best swordsmen in Japan. Riku sounded like she may fit under that same category. With all the negative auras coming from her, it was definitely something to at least note if nothing else. Hitsuki also noticed that she never seemed to speak unless he brought up a topic. That same role of failing to play hostess was showing once more and beginning to truly bother him.

Why does she refuse to do so? Would it really be so bad for her?

It almost seemed like Riku was hiding something. Whatever it may be, she was doing a decent enough job of it for now. But it was obviously taking every ounce of her inner strength to not reveal whatever this ... "thing" was.

Or ... was he overreacting once more?

A small hint of a smile crossed his lips as he noticed Hitomi blush from his compliment. Was it really that foreign to her? Even though she worked so hard to earn the praise? It .. baffled him, honestly. That should have been something she was natural accustomed to. Yet, her reactions seemed to spell out the very opposite. Finally, Riku snapped as dessert was mentioned.

That ... was uncalled for.

As badly as he wanted to say it aloud, Hitsuki took his own turn to restrain himself. After taking another bite of the food, he grabbed his sake cup and raised it against his lips, closing his eyes slowly. A soft, content sigh left his parted lips as he continued to savor and enjoy the food and drink before him.

"Yes. This is by far one of the best meals I've had in a long while. Thank you again." His gold eyes opened once more as he finished speaking, bowing his head to both Riku and Hitomi. While the lash could have easily been from the sake, Hitsuki had a feeling it was from .. something else. And it only strengthened his thoughts that something was definitely wrong in this house even more. But .. the truth would definitely be revealed in time. That much had been proven when Riku finally spoke harshly to Hitomi. It was the first and most definite clue he had which began to reassure him his instincts were likely correct.

And yet, it pained him, very much so. He had entered Kyoto with intentions of seeking out peace, a break from chaos for a while. If anything, that just seemed to reappear. The thought irked him ... but he kept himself and his emotions in check. After all, if he was wrong, there would be no sense in getting worked up over nothing.

Vile, disgusting little whore. Once our guest is dealt with for the night, I must make sure to punish her… appropriately.

"You are more than welcome," Riku told him, a warm smile forming on her lips as the woman tilted her head. Another wave of black fell over her shoulder...the dark threads catching whatever light they can, and reflecting it, looking very much like a molten river. Her arctic blue eyes were melted pools. "I must apologize for my... how should we say... lack of conversation? I must say, I wore myself out earlier...and I find myself tired, and unable to start any particular topic for our conversation... for that, I apologize. I hope my failing as hostess does not make you look poorly onto me." Riku bent her head, contrite. It was a bit of a surprise, such words coming from such a dignified young woman... and yet, who's to say that she didn't mean every one? Her hands were folded neatly in her lap, and more obsidian cascaded forward... hiding her expression from view.

Lies... It is all lies... Mistress Riku is never apologetic about anything...and when it comes to conversation, she simply sees no reason to bother herself with it...

Hitomi found that her hands were trembling, and so laid one over the other, in order to calm herself. Those golden eyes of hers were pinpricks, pupils dilated and panic clearly written on the girl's features. While the words were simple, she could hear the underlying threat hidden between. Make a fool of yourself...and cast a poor light onto me, I will make your life hell. Her heart slamming against her rib cage, over and over again... panic forcing it to race at a faster pace than what was normal. Her fingers curled into a fist underneath the table, which continued to shake.

A shadow falling over her face, one hand came to rest on top of the table...while Hitomi slowly gathered her composure, and rose onto her feet.

"I...I am happy you enjoyed the meal, Takeda Hitsuki..." Hitomi lifted her gaze, the golden depths lacking their usual luster, and her smile missing its...easy radiance. "I will go on and prepare your room for the night... It will not take long, I assure you." With a bow to both him and Riku, she left the two alone... needing a little more time in order to help her frazzled nerves. Obsidian black flowed out behind her in a rich, shimmering river...strands catching what light is possible, and yet disappearing around the corner.

Riku bowed her head, but otherwise said nothing in response. Her icy eyes lowered onto the cup of sake held delicately between her fingers, watching ripples break the amber surface.

Silence befell the two yet again...only this time, it had an awkward note to it. Riku sipped at her drink, content with the silence, for it was an old, familiar friend. Never will she find discomfort within its grasp... nor will she feel uneasy. In all actuality... she felt more uncomfortable amidst others, who spoke, laughed... and everything else.

It wasn't but ten minutes later that Hitomi made a reappearance, hands hidden within the sleeves of her kimono, and head bent. "Takeda-san... Your room is ready whenever you are." Luckily it was an easy enough task, airing out the seldom-used room reserved only for guests...not that there were many. Every day she cleans the rooms used on a daily basis, and the rooms that are not, once a week. Her fingers played with each other inside her sleeves...an old habit that she has found hard to break. After a heartbeat, Hitomi lifted her head and gave a faint smile. "I will go ahead and start washing the dishes and kitchen... I will probably not see you again tonight, but I hope you get a good night's sleep."

Hitomi bowed her head...a thought occurring to the young girl. "Unless...you wish me to show the way to your room?" Of course Takeda-san won't know how to get there... being as how he is a guest, and has never been here before. A little sheepish at the realization, she couldn't help but let out a soft, breathless laugh... which Riku took note of, disapproval swirling within her eyes. "Ah... sorry," Hitomi apologized, sounding sincere. "I did not mean to laugh... I meant nothing by it..."
