While I'm waiting for the second season of the BBC series The Musketeers to come to the US, I'm having a serious jones for a good old fashioned swashbuckling, bodice-ripping RP. While I am expecting this to be plot and character driven, I'll be disappointed if there's not plenty of smut as well!
I'm thinking our starting point would be close to canon at the beginning of the novel, but we can go off-cannon pretty quickly (as the series did), so you don't have to know the book.
I'd like some canon characters (I want to play one) but in this case I'm also open to a canon/OC mix. I'm also open to players taking on more than one character.
Here are descriptions of the main canon characters. The images I'm using are from the series.

(from l to r: Athos, Porthos, d'Artagnon, Aramis)
Athos (Taken!) The eldest and most experienced of the three (and the one with the most mysterious past), he is on the surface a world-weary cynic, but as is often the case, this is emotional armor built up to protect a wounded soul. He becomes a father figure to d'Artagnon, while the other two are more big brothers.
Porthos The biggest of the Musketeers, Porthos is (most of the time) a jolly giant. The friendliest, most outgoing of the three, Porthos loves nothing better than a rollicking night in a tavern, with wine, songs, good friends and pretty girls. When battle begins, however, there is no one better to have at your side.
d'Artagnon (Taken!) A young man (about 19) who travels from his home in the country to Paris with dreams of becoming one of the King's Musketeers. His father had been a soldier and trained the boy well with both sword and pistol. He's smart but naive, courageous to the point of being foolhardy, and an incurable romantic.
Aramis (Taken!) The youngest son of wealthy and pious parents, Aramis seemed destined for the priesthood. He disappointed his mother by dropping out of the seminary to join the Musketeers. He still occasionally speaks of returning one day to complete his studies and be ordained, but for now, he's happy as a soldier. And to not be burdened by a vow of celibacy.

Cardinal Richelieu (Taken!) Holding two positions of power (he is both the highest ranking Catholic clergyman in France, and Prime Minister), His Eminence is a force to be reckoned with. He is a master of intrigue and behind-the-scenes political maneuvering, and employs many spies and agents, and even his own troops, the Red Guards, rivals of the King's Musketeers.

King Louis XIII A young king, he is nearly always dependent on the counsel of Cardinal Richelieu, unaware that the Cardinal always has his own agenda. The other influential voice in the King's ear; Queen Anne, who often serves as his conscience.
Female

Lady de Winter (Taken!) Beautiful, intelligent and completely devoid of conscience, she is among the Cardinal's most trusted spies and, when necessary, assassins. An accomplished seductress, the young d'Artagnon is soon in her sights, but she soon learns she must deal with a ghost from her past.

Constance Bonasieux (Taken!) The pretty landlady of the boarding house where d'Artagnon lodges. She has common sense, a good head for business and courage she hasn't yet tapped. As one of the Queen's dressmakers, she sometimes finds herself summoned to the Palace. Her arranged marriage to a much older man brings her little happiness, while their handsome young lodger brings both romance and adventure into her life.

Queen Anne Young wife of Louis XIII. She cares for her husband and takes her duties as queen seriously; too seriously for the Cardinal's liking. Hers is the one voice that can occasionally have more influence over Louis than the Cardinal's. But she does not love the King, and is often tempted by the young soldiers sometimes assigned to protect her.
