The Jump was as active as it was any morning, and in some ways it was quite similar to any airport one might have visited on earth. There were people waiting for new arrivals, some held signs others anxiously waited to see a familiar face walking down the arrivals lanes. This was the earth side of the Jump, and as such it was basically mundane in every way...at least until you traveled to the departure gates.
These gates, did not lead to airplanes, in fact...they technically led nowhere. When they were turned off these gates were little more then oval shaped frames, each one nine feet tall and four wide and made of a very odd blue metal that seemed to tremble even when not active. As the days group of sustainability officers prepared to make the trip off world they would find themselves staring at these odd oval passageways...and looking at the plain wall behind them. Until they are activated of course...
A deep green light fills the gap, shimmering even under the bright industrial lights...but producing no light of its own. It was sort of an odd idea...that people 'walked' to another world, to Phobos. It was likely an even stranger idea when it was realized that these same people were in...the simplest terms, government funded prostitutes. These men and women were traveling thirteen hundred light years...to mate with an alien species. Most of these people...some fifty at gate eight, were in the General Sustainability Core or GSC. They wen't to sustainability offices, where they would head to their assigned room, and simply wait for the days participant. The GSC officers generally didn't know who impregnated them, or who they impregnated, it was disconnected and impersonal...simply a job.
The Private Sustainability Core on the other hand, were considered priority employees. They were sent to specific families, sometimes even specific individuals in order to preserve important bloodlines. One of these PSC officers, was among the fifty men and women at gate eight...and she was about to meet her new 'mate' for the first time. On the other side of the glimmering portal was an alien, who would soon father a child with her...and baring any complications, he would likely do so several times before they parted ways.
As mundane as it was, all she had to do was file through to the other world to start her new adventure...
