Soft morning light fell in through a curtained window, onto the resting body of a young woman. The light seemed to envelop her pale skin shown by her pajama shorts and tank top, making it glow. She lay on her stomach, her fingers delicately holding a paperback, as she got lost in her world. This is where Cassiopeia spent most of her time, her chestnut hair cascading in ringlets over her shoulders as her emerald eyes eating up the words in front of her. Now that her nineteenth birthday had come and passed she reveled having more time for her books since she finished school. The only thing that interrupted her now was her part time job at the local grocery store. She looked up from her book as her mother knocked on the door before entering, a nervous smile on her lips. Cassiopeia set her book down and listened to what her mother had to say.
It was the weekend before the holiday season, a time for families to come together and spend time with each other. But Cassiopeia never expected it to be this much quality time. The young woman froze with her mouth hung slightly ajar in shock and indignation at her mother's words. Not the part about her grandparents getting her brother's room because it was furthest from the stairs, oh no. She cared for her elderly relatives very much and did not want to hear them crash down to their death in the night. She was very much upset by where her younger brother would now be sleeping.
"Why does he have to share my room?" she questioned, finally able to speak after the initial shock died down. Quickly she moved to a sitting position, her leg crossed over the other as she moved her light brown locks from her face. Resting her hand on her forehead she watched as her mother cleared a space in her room for her brother.
"Cassi, it'll just be for a couple of weeks. Your dad and I would enjoy the privacy as much as your grandparents would." her mother smiled at the light trace of Cassiopeia's blush, "Plus, it wouldn't be far to put him on the sofa downstairs, you know how cold it gets in the night." Her mother busied herself as the young girl realized her point, letting out a long sigh. She still was not satisfied with the circumstances, but they still had a week of being apart during the day. Maybe they could figure out how to make this work. She placed her bookmark inside of the book she was reading and set it on her nightstand. Her fantasy world had been ruined by life's misfortunes. Still, her grandparents would be here within the hour, she needed to get ready. She jumped up to rummage through her closet, tactfully avoiding her mother as she reorganized her room, and set about picking out her outfit. She settled on a dark green dress that matched her eyes and smiled in triumph. Leaving the dress on her bed with a bra and a pair of panties she made her way to the bathroom to shower. Her mother offered her a warm smile as she went but Cassiopeia returned it with a forced one, at least trying to accept her fate.
