"Alright, that's the last of your belongings ma'am"

The hired mover closed the back of his truck and wiped the sweat off of his brow, as it was a particularly hot afternoon despite being early spring. His client seemed awfully young, fresh out of high school in fact, to be moving into a house of her own. She must really have her act together he thought. That, or her parents were very wealthy and/or careless. Whatever the case, it wasn't important to him as he had more work to do. He took a clipboard from out of his truck and handed it to the girl.

"Just sign here and I'll be on my way"

At eighteen years old, the young woman seemed to have quite the life ahead of her. She had her classes at the college already planned out, she had a job lined up, and she even had a place. The house was in a nice neighborhood, and to her, it was a cozy place. The small, black compact car was parked in the driveway, a few bags still packed in the back of it as she spoke with the man moving her belongings from the moving truck. At five feet in height, she was quite shorter than the man she took the clipboard from. Her bright blue eyes skimmed over the paper as she adjusted the large, black framed glasses, making sure there weren't any odd fees added on before she signed the paper, a soft smile on her pink lips.

"Thank you." She said, smiling as she handed it back, the signature that of Rea Madison. Her waist length black hair fell around her slender, pale figure, a few shorter strands framing her face. She was dressed simply in a pair of black, loose fitting sweatpants, the white tank too she wore clinging tightly to her slender frame and large breasts. She wore black sandals on her feet, though she was beginning to wish she had dressed more nicely, but the long drive from her home town seemed to make her think comfort as opposed to her image. "I greatly appreciate the help." She said before she moved to her car, unloading a few bags before she walked into the entrance of her new home. The boxes were scattered around the living room as she glanced around, a small sigh leaving her lips. This was a new beginning, and she was anxious to get this new chapter started.

The mover tipped his hat to Rea as they parted ways, unable to keep from smiling at her visible excitement to be living on her own. After climbing in his truck and starting up the engine though, he remembered that the neighborhood committee asked him to give her an envelope. Rummaging through his papers, he found the parchment and scurried over to her front porch, slipping it under her door before returning to the vehicle and taking his leave. The letter's contents read as such...

To Rea Madison

Hello, and welcome to our humble neighborhood! We are pleased to have you as part of our thriving community. We would highly suggest that you visit our neighborhood committee office located on the corner of Elm. Street at your earliest convenience and register as an official member so as to be more involved in any local going-ons and events. We hope to hear from you very soon.

Signed, The Neighborhood Committee

She looked around the house sighing a bit, knowing she had her work cut out for her. The young woman would be unpacking for the rest of the week, she was certain of that. Part of her wished she had some friends in the area, or some that moved wit her, but at the same time, it was nice being on her own, living on her own. The sound of something brushing against the floor caught her attention, her hear turning as she saw the note. She smile as she began reading, getting an idea as she rummaged through a bag, grabbing her roller skates, and her pads. Her hobby was roller derby, and the idea of skating to the committee office seemed alluring to her.

After making sure she had the outdoor wheels on securely, she changed into a pair of black shorts, her knee pads tossed on, green and black striped socks rising to her knees. She put her skates on next, making sure she had any papers she might need in her messenger bag, along with some sneakers before she put on the black elbow pads and wrist guards. Once her helmet was on, she was out the door and skating to the office, listening to the music that blared from the headphones around her neck. She read the street signs as she skated, turning onto Elm Street, only stopping when she got to the office. She stopped at the door, taking off her helmet and skates, her shoes replacing them before she walked in with the skates slung over her shoulder.

The secretary stationed at the front desk didn't notice Rea at first, being pre-occupied with her magazine. Working at the office wasn't a very busy job. Easy perhaps, but definitely on the boring side. She peered up at Rea only to turn back to her magazine. It took her a moment before finally realizing that someone needed attending too.

"Oh! Oh hello!" She sputtered, fumbling to hide her magazine whilst simultaneously putting on a nervous smile. "Come, come in! You must be Rea Madison, we've been expecting you." She said, aware of her obvious fib. "They've prepared all of the forms in the back room for you, right this way please." She motioned for Rea to follow her as she stood up and entered a door to the right of the front desk.

A few hours later...

"Alright, looks like your good to go Ms. Madison. Thank you for stopping by and again, welcome to the neighborhood" The front desk lady said as Rea left the building, waving her off.

Rea laughed a bit as she watched the woman, stepping inside as she followed her. Part of her wondered if that was true or not, but it was nice to be in a cool environment. She followed her into the side room, soon going over the paperwork, reading everything and asking any question that came to mind. After a few hours though, she was lacing her skates up, waving as she began to leave. So far, she felt she was going to like living there.

"Let's explore a bit..." She mushed to herself as she turned onto another street, deciding to explore the neighborhood a bit. She had been told there was a pool and a large park, and she knew she wanted to check them out to see if she would enjoy them.

No sooner then 30 seconds after Rea had decided to roam the neighborhood did a nearby dumpster in a secluded ally suddenly rumble, making a load noise as it shook side to side. The quake was short lived, but began to resume a moment later. The waste container continued to repeat this pattern again and again.

It was as if something was stuck inside, unable to get out...

The sound caught her attention as she came to a stop quickly, her eyes on the dumpster before she skated closer to it, the young woman inspecting it slightly. Rea bit her lower lip, almost certain it had to be a person stuck inside, especially as the shaking began once more. Whoever, or whatever was stuck inside had to be strong to shake it like it was. Carefully, she got the lid to open, opening the dumpster fully as she stepped back.

A silence seemed to befell the neighborhood as the dumpster was opened. After a few seconds passed, something extraordinary emerged.

A praying mantis.

A giant praying mantis.

One could see that the massive insect must of measured at least seven feet in height as he surfaced from within the dumpster, its back facing Rea. It looked to the left. Then to the right. It then turned it's head a whole 180 degrees, Finally laying eyes on the person who freed it from it's unhygienic prison. It gasped. "Oh wow! A Human! My first interaction with an actual human!" it exclaimed.

It talked.

It turned around and climbed out of the dumpster, approaching the girl. Dwarfing her in size, it loomed over her and spoke again in a rather cheerful tone. "Thank you for helping me out of there human. What are is your name? My name is Squishy"

She moved back from the dumpster, her body tensing, eyes wide as she found her gaze on a giant praying mantis. Rea froze when it looked at her, her mouth open when it spoke. It... Spoke?! How was that even possible? Scratch that! How was a seven foot praying mantis even possible?! For the life of her, she couldn't wrap her head around this, and part of her began to wonder if this was some kind of prank.

She found herself rooted as it came towards her, unable to move as it thanked her and introduced itself to her. "I....I'm Rea..." She stammered slightly, but at the same time, she knew he couldn't be seen in that neighborhood. "You...you should come with me." She said, thinking a bit. If anything, her house would be a good place to hide this Squishy character. Please let this be a prank...

Squishy was giddy beyond measure to be talking to a human for the first time in his life. He had been looking forward to this moment for quite some time now. He shook his lower body, removing pieces of garbage that clung to his abdomen. He then unfurled his wings, rapidly flapping them in order to rid them of any trash that might have gotten lodged within them. They made a loud buzzing noise as he did, blowing a moderate gust of wind in various directions. Finally, he quickly ran his elaborate mandibles through each of his forearms, eating both edible and non edible liter that was wedged within his many sharp spines.

Once he had finished grooming himself, began to follow her and replied in the same happy tone as before. "Certainly Rea! Where is it that you would like to go with me?"

Rea couldn't take her eyes off him as he cleared the garbage from his body, the buzzing from his wings catching her attention quickly. She bit her lower lip, fidgeting with her hands as she began skating home, her eyes on him slightly. "How about my house?" She suggested, becoming a bit curious. So far, he seemed nice enough, civil and well mannered. How was that possible? Was this some prank? Or the product of a genetic experiment? Maybe she had hit her head, or she was dreaming! There were so many possibilities, but she knew one thing. He couldn't be seen out in the open like this.

Squishy was momentarily entranced by Rea's curious (at least to him) method of locomotion, his head following her legs as they slide across the ground. He snapped out of it a few seconds later as he realized that she had invited him to her house and that he was to follow her. He began to follow suit, requiring only a quarter of the paces took by her to catch up due to his large, spread out legs. "I would love to visit your house Rea-chan! Thank you so much for your hospital." he said in a chipper voice, completely unaware that the proper word he should of used was hospitality. Squishy was overjoyed, and though he tried to make it inapparent, he did so poorly.

Hospital? She laughed softly, her eyes on him a bit. Why did she find herself amused by a seven foot preying mantis? Rea was certain he could rip her into two if the wanted. "I think the word you're looking for is hospitality." She said with a small smile, the young woman remaining relaxed, though she was quite curious. "Squishy, how is it you can talk? And that you're seven feet in height for that matter?" She asked as she turned onto her street. Was she dreaming? Had she been hit by a car?

Squishy took note of Rea's correction so as to use the word properly next time. Though he had an unusually decent grasp on the human language, it was still very complex and he made mistakes often. Nevertheless, he was excited about being able to hold his end of a conversation with her and eagerly answered her question. "Oh that's easy." He said. "See, by moving my mandibles and breathing out, I can make words come out and talk to people. And when living things become older, they grow bigger and bigger." He felt very proud at being able to answer her question, oblivious to the fact that that was not what she had meant at all.
