Despite the year being 2050, it felt as if time had gone backwards. For some unknown reason, many nations throughout the world had seemed to go back to traditions and lifestyles of the Medieval Ages; or their proper equivalent. At first, this new change had been quite the shock. But over the years, many had come to accept it. The most common answer from many different people had been something along the lines of 'things were simpler back then'. And thus they had tried to revive an old era as best as possible. Most of everyone had gone along with it well enough.

Elaine Thompson was no exception to this rule. Though honestly, her case was more like she had always been intrigued by this time frame anyway. So the change wasn't at all a bad thing in her eyes. Well, not much. There were a few things she could do without. The lack of women having much of a role was definitely one. But she had been able to find one that suited her perfectly, a seamstress. Her hobby and job was one of the few things that was keeping the eighteen year old sane and occupied.

Her parents had died years ago from an abrupt illness. None of the doctors throughout London, England, had been able to help them as it was apparently new and unexplained. This had happened when she was ten. Soon after, around the age of twelve, she was taught in her school how to sew and create clothes. She found it to be something which made her happy, especially when she could make things for other people.

That had thus led to her opening her shop last year. Despite it being relatively new, Elaine had been rather successful. Even still, however, it didn't alter her status. Her parents had always been poor and managed to get her in public schools as opposed to the refined, wealthy private ones. Even with all she made, her attire wasn't nearly as rich as the true aristocrats.

In some degrees, Elaine envied them. In others, she didn't. One way in which she did, however, involved the king's son who was to be wed soon. These rumors had caused her to work on a dress for herself. It was mostly done and thankfully, she had all of today off. She could devote every second and minute to herself and her craft.

"Still, not like anything will happen." she mused softly, carefully stringing some thread through a needle. "That only happens in fairy tales." While Cinderella had been one of her favorites ... no. She was asking for way too many coincidences to occur for her to have such luck. But that was fine. If nothing else, the ability to get out of the house and get some fresh air would do her well she supposed.

Elaine hummed softly as she then began to work on the hem, the last part which needed to be worked on. No commoner had seen the prince and thus she was curious as to what he looked like. The party was supposed to be a masquerade. Thankfully, the king had been generous enough to make it an open-invitation as opposed to asking for only the more wealthy individuals to come to the ball.

All the same, Elaine perfectly understood that the masquerade factor would make it even more impossible to identify the prince. But a smile managed to cross her face. Just being able to go to something as magnificent as homecoming or even prom would be more than enough to make her happy. This was a true blessing and honor, one she would embrace. It wasn't like people got such opportunities every day, after all.

Elaine continued to work and gently hum, moving the needle gracefully through the cloth as more and more of her dress was being crafted before her very eyes. The sight of it also made her smile widen. She'd put so much effort into it. Elaine couldn't wait to wear it. Just from a quick glance, it seemed as if it would suit her. Hopefully all of this time and work would end up being worth it in the end.

Jonathan Harris

While the rest of the world seemed to be crumbling around them, the Harris family was making money. It was something to be said, there was money in misery, and this was the case even in the year 2050. For the quitters out there, it was easier to just accept that things were "simpler." For whatever reason, people accepted "simple" as a means to give up the things they coveted for a much easier life, the Harris family sought to accrue more wealth. They had one of the biggest financial empires in the country, if not the world, and the cause was nothing short of genius. His father, an old timey Jew, was as penny pinching and as frugal as they came. Nothing came easy for young Jonathan, not even money.

The passing of his father was rough. His mother was growing old and senile, and the symptoms just seemed to get worse and worse. His father served as her anchor to keep her grounded and keep her making good decisions. After his father had died, she had gone off the deep end. For all intents and purposes, Jonathan was running the company now and his mother just served as a figure head. No one on the company's board of directors trusted her and turned to Jonathan for the decisions. As sad as it was to say, his mother was nothing more than a figurehead at this point. An old, delusional figurehead.

It had been his mother's idea to hold a masquerade ball and it was an idea that Jonathan had decided to run with. It could be fun, he would open it to everyone who wanted to come, and for once in their pitiful little lives he would show them what luxury was. Jonathan certainly wasn't the sort of man who would give handouts towards the citizens, but he also wasn't one to shove his money in their faces. It seemed very hypocritical what he was doing in regards to the ball, but technically it was his mother's idea, and technically she was the one that was throwing the party.

In this time, much like throughout history, those with the money and the wealth seized control of power. This was no different. The country was without a king after the passing of his father. After that, his older brother seized the throne, and while his older brother was busy running the country, he was busy running the business. It was perfect, they stayed out of each other's hair, and they made it so they would be taken care of. In this way, Jonathan was still technically a prince. He was the heir to the throne if something were to happen to his older brother, god forbid. The ball was in a few hours, and the announcement would be made tonight. He would be mingling with the crowd, and he would find out if any of them were potentially suitable brides. There would really be no way to tell, everyone would be on the lookout for the king.

The party had started, and the announcement had been made towards the start. Most of the citizens knew of their new king, and had heard rumors of the other prince circulating around. There were large and lavish ice sculptures of mythical creatures, Gods, and of course the main skyscraper the company owned. There were fountains of cheese and chocolate, as well as a large banquet table that always seemed to be restocked, and always seemed to be full of food. The large chandelier that hung over the ball room floor must have cost a small fortune to make, and it likely cost more than most of the people's net worth. It was simple.

Jonathan had long been mingling, and while there had been some that caught his interest, he knew he had to work his way through them as quickly as possible in order to at least meet them. Stopping for juat a moment by the food table, Jonathan let out a sigh. It would be a few moments before the dance would officially begin. Everyone just seemed to be mingling and wondering which one was the prince. With the mask over his face, however, Jonathan felt a little safer. No one suspected him. .

Even without looking back, Elaine's head seemed to remember what time it was. That had nearly made her rush, not wishing to be late. She refused, however, and managed to keep her hands steady. The work was too delicate to go from her calm pace to a hasty one. She needed to keep her concentration on the here and now. "You won't be late." she repeated softly to herself, feeling her heart race in anticipation. Each time the needle went through the fabric, Elaine knew she was moments away from being able to adorn her body with the dress. She never bragged on things she did, although many of her customers suggested she should more. Still, Elaine did have a lot of pride in her crafting and it showed in her work. The sewing continued for what felt like forever before finally ... she was finished.

"Yes!" she cried out happily, quickly standing up to her feet and removing it carefully from the dress rack. She first held it up to her body before taking it with her into a nearby dressing room. Elaine had been in a comfortable blouse and skirt since waking up in the morning. Now, however, things were about to be different. One by one, the clothes that had covered her skin were removed and placed over the door of the changing room. Soon, she was in naught but a bra and pair of panties. Elaine glanced down at herself and swallowed nervously.

".. Here goes everything and nothing ... " she mused softly, pulling it over her and gently smoothing it out. A content and proud smile crossed her face as she looked at her reflection, seeing herself in her new dress. It wasn't nearly as fancy as anyone higher in rank than herself. But it would more than suffice; at least in Elaine's eyes. After looking herself over for a few more moments, she then headed into her room and grabbed a matching pair of slippers, placing them on her feet.

Dear gods, this is real! This is really happening!

She couldn't help but let soft, happy giggles pass her lips. Finally, she was about to attend one of the most famous events in ... quite a while. Even if nothing overly spectacular between herself and anyone else there happened, it was still a change of pace and one that Elaine desperately needed.

Now the main problem; how to get there. Walking seemed foolish. But would it really be worth trying to use a carriage? She mulled this over as she grabbed a silver mask with a sapphire set into the middle of it. She'd swallow her pride and arrange for a mode of transportation to take her there. After some quick calculations, Elaine grabbed enough money - which was more than she desired - and held it firmly in her hands.

Thankfully, a few things had remained the same during the change back to the Medieval era. Certain inventions had been kept in place. One had been the phone. Normal ones, mind you. But that was fine with her. She had never been overly fond of cell phones in the first place. After calling for a carriage, she headed out to the front door. Her mask remained in her hand as Elaine found herself playing the waiting game. Each minute that passed made her heart continue to pound in her chest.

This was one of the most anxious and exciting days of her life so far. The real emotions, however, would arrive once she did at the party.

The mingling was going quite well, at least Jonathan thought they were. The crowd had reacted how he had expected to his father's death. An odd mix of relief, joy, and sadness. While his father wasn't the best ruler by any means, he certainly wasn't the worst. No one had accused him of being the most compassionate, but in the same grain, no one accused him of being a tyrant either. He was just a man who had been in the right place at the right time and seized power from those who couldn't maintain it. Sometimes in life, that was all that it took, a good coincidence, for something either good or bad to happen that would change one's life forever. Jonathan hoped that it was that same way tonight.

It was easy for him to find a potential suitor. If he poked his head out of the window and called that he was looking for a mate, women would line up out the door for him. Jonathan figured, it was a mix of his family's prowess, as well as the fact that he was the younger prince. It meant that he didn't have any inheritance but he did have access to the wealth, at least while his mother was still around. In the end, she still called some of the shots, at least for the relationship between him and his brother. Jonathan figured that this way would be better. The more anonymous nature of a masquerade ball meant that everyone was more or less on the same playing field. Body type was one way to judge, but it would be more judged based on personality, at least in theory.

The man had gone from girl to girl, giving them a quick dance and listening to a little bit about them. No one had particularly stuck out, however, and no one expected him as being the prince. After a short bit, he decided to take a break. Move to the refreshments table where he had overheard some people talking about his deceased father. They only reaffirmed what he thought, and what everyone else seemed to already know. They didn't reflect on him positively or negatively, moreso in a matter of fact sort of manner. His father had done good things, and his father had made terrible decisions, but such was the life of a politician and a ruler. He hadn't plunged them into major debt, nor did he start any wars. He kept the citizens safe for the most part but he was a little more than corrupt. Such was the territory though.

Jonathan's 6'4 frame was disguised perfectly in his suit and his mask. The white mask with black accents wasn't super out of the ordinary. In fact, many people had brought similar masks. The only dead giveaway was his height, but seeing as how nearly none of the citizens had seen the prince up close, let alone stood next to him, it was almost a moot point. He was just a tall man amidst a fair amount of people who were somewhat shorter than he was.

Drinking some of the wine that was left on the table for the guests to enjoy, he picked up some of the bread and approached a woman with a silver mask and a beautiful gemstone embedded in it. It was one of the more lavish masks around, and it was one of the more unique get-ups at the party. Most people didn't have a dress or a mask quite like those and it almost instantly drew the man towards her. Offering her a spot of wine, he smiled. He hadn't noticed her before, so she must have just arrived. That meant that she had missed all of the announcements - the death, the food, and the prince in the crowd. Maybe this was someone he could just have fun with.

"Better late than never I suppose."

He greeted her with a wide smile.

It had taken about seven minutes for the carriage to arrive at her residence and ten to fifteen more to arrive at the palace. One could give or take a few in terms of time, of course. Even as Elaine stepped out, something hinted to her she'd probably been late. The thought made her inwardly curse. After handing the money over to the driver, she placed the mask on her face. Thankfully, if anyone had realized Elaine was late, no one cared much if at all to point this out to her. An inward sigh of relief echoed in her head. As her blue eyes glanced around the interior of the castle, however, she let out a soft gasp. Elaine had always guessed it would be glamorous, a sight to behold. But imagining and actually seeing such a thing were two very different things. And now, she was finding herself actually doing the latter.

"Amazing .. " she murmured, unable to find many other words to describe not only the surroundings she was in but how Elaine was feeling. All the while, Elaine at least made certain to avoid running into anyone while doing her looking around. Even with the masks on other individuals, she could at least notice that many people were giving her odd and uneasy looks. It was enough to make her body begin to tense up. Suddenly, this began to feel like a horrible idea, to come here.

But before she could even muster up the courage to try to turn and walk out, a voice caught her attention. It held a sense of calmness to it. That was at least how it seemed to Elaine. As she turned around, she saw a black and white, almost yin-yang like, mask adorning a man's face. She found herself staring at the foreign pattern for a bit before noting the wine. Usually, Elaine didn't drink but maybe, it'd help her get less anxious. Her head nodded as she gently took the glass.

"Thank you. And yes, definitely always better later than never." Her fingers carefully wrapped around the glass as she raised it up and placed it against her lips, letting the alcohol flow down her throat. Behind her own guise, it would be obvious to Jonathan the five foot six inch beauty had never had liquor before due to the face she made. "Ah ... sorry. A bit strong. But not horrible by any means." Elaine couldn't exactly pinpoint why or even what was making her think of it. But this man seemed ... different. The exact aspect, however, remained unknown for now.

"Not to sound rude, but may I inquire what made you come this way as opposed to any other direction?" Elaine was definitely not used to attention. She hadn't exactly planned to arrive at this masquerade and get much if any, for that matter. But now that the tables were turning, she was trying to go along with it and adapt as best as possible. To help her do so, however, she wanted to know the answer to her inquiry at the very minimum. It'd be heavily preferred but she wouldn't push for an answer if he didn't want to bring it up.

This scenario was absolutely perfect. No one knew who he was, and no one really cared. Everyone was looking for the prince, and no one had expected him. There were those with more ornate and more interesting masks than he was adorned with, and most people expected the phantom prince to be wearing a mask that was quite extravagant. The simple design immediately drew Jonathan in, and he was more than happy to blend in and mingle with the citizens of the tiny town. He could point out a few people, mainly those that had larger bodies, or were a little darker in color, but to a certain point, everyone really seemed to look the same. Only really differentiated by their mask, hair, and clothing color.

When she asked her question, he shook his head a little bit. He really didn't see the need to answer the question. If she was looking for something in particular, it wouldn't be coming from him. In truth, perhaps he was drawn to her mask. The sapphire in the middle was more unique than any other mask there. While he knew she likely wasn't fishing for compliments, he wouldn't give her much more than a subtle smile.

The woman reacted to the wine in a way Jonathan wasn't expecting, and he gave her a slight frown. That wine was one of the finer vintages from the on-site vineyard. All of the wine for the party had been created by the master brewer that lived within the confines of the compound. They had been saving the wine for such a situation. If she didn't like the wine, it was fine, she could say she didn't like it or that she didn't drink. She didn't need to come up with any excuses.

Finally, he elected to speak.

"I suppose I came over here on a whim. I hadn't seen your mask before so I just figured you had just arrived."

He said with a smile, before the live band began to play some music.

"Would you care to dance?"

The words left his mouth, and he held out his gloved hand.
