Despite the year being 2050, it felt as if time had gone backwards. For some unknown reason, many nations throughout the world had seemed to go back to traditions and lifestyles of the Medieval Ages; or their proper equivalent. At first, this new change had been quite the shock. But over the years, many had come to accept it. The most common answer from many different people had been something along the lines of 'things were simpler back then'. And thus they had tried to revive an old era as best as possible. Most of everyone had gone along with it well enough.
Elaine Thompson was no exception to this rule. Though honestly, her case was more like she had always been intrigued by this time frame anyway. So the change wasn't at all a bad thing in her eyes. Well, not much. There were a few things she could do without. The lack of women having much of a role was definitely one. But she had been able to find one that suited her perfectly, a seamstress. Her hobby and job was one of the few things that was keeping the eighteen year old sane and occupied.
Her parents had died years ago from an abrupt illness. None of the doctors throughout London, England, had been able to help them as it was apparently new and unexplained. This had happened when she was ten. Soon after, around the age of twelve, she was taught in her school how to sew and create clothes. She found it to be something which made her happy, especially when she could make things for other people.
That had thus led to her opening her shop last year. Despite it being relatively new, Elaine had been rather successful. Even still, however, it didn't alter her status. Her parents had always been poor and managed to get her in public schools as opposed to the refined, wealthy private ones. Even with all she made, her attire wasn't nearly as rich as the true aristocrats.
In some degrees, Elaine envied them. In others, she didn't. One way in which she did, however, involved the king's son who was to be wed soon. These rumors had caused her to work on a dress for herself. It was mostly done and thankfully, she had all of today off. She could devote every second and minute to herself and her craft.
"Still, not like anything will happen." she mused softly, carefully stringing some thread through a needle. "That only happens in fairy tales." While Cinderella had been one of her favorites ... no. She was asking for way too many coincidences to occur for her to have such luck. But that was fine. If nothing else, the ability to get out of the house and get some fresh air would do her well she supposed.
Elaine hummed softly as she then began to work on the hem, the last part which needed to be worked on. No commoner had seen the prince and thus she was curious as to what he looked like. The party was supposed to be a masquerade. Thankfully, the king had been generous enough to make it an open-invitation as opposed to asking for only the more wealthy individuals to come to the ball.
All the same, Elaine perfectly understood that the masquerade factor would make it even more impossible to identify the prince. But a smile managed to cross her face. Just being able to go to something as magnificent as homecoming or even prom would be more than enough to make her happy. This was a true blessing and honor, one she would embrace. It wasn't like people got such opportunities every day, after all.
Elaine continued to work and gently hum, moving the needle gracefully through the cloth as more and more of her dress was being crafted before her very eyes. The sight of it also made her smile widen. She'd put so much effort into it. Elaine couldn't wait to wear it. Just from a quick glance, it seemed as if it would suit her. Hopefully all of this time and work would end up being worth it in the end.
