This sucked.
It was hard to believe that she'd actually been looking forward to this. Her bones were aching, her lungs burning, and then there was the fact that she smelt like an unholy mix between a wet dog and moldy bread. What little comfort she'd found in the peace had long since vanished, and now all that remained was a bitter resentment towards her own decision. She'd thought the hiking trip would've been a welcome respite from college. A chance to break away from the doldrums of constant studying and massive papers, and opportunity to figuratively let her hair down. So far, however, it was anything but. A faint sigh slipped out of Len's pale lips as she trudged down the barely visible path, baggy gray eyes lingering upon the enshrouded horizon. She'd been told that the path through the Isolde Woods wasn't exactly an easy one. The path hadn't seen much use in quite a bit of time, and had a habit of twisting about at the most inopportune times. Shelter was in short supply as well, not to mention venomous snakes had a habit of napping beneath the rocks. Above all, however, there were the rumors. Of strange noises slipping out of the woods at night, of several hikers having long since gone missing. Your typical hiker would've stayed clear of the forest and taken the long way around via the highway, and yet for whatever reason Len had decided to take the risk. She'd already spent the last week or so trudging about in the boonies, how much worse could some forest be?
A whole lot worse, as it turned out. A faint chill ran through the girl's form as she continued her way down, a faint wince crossing her lips as she shifted the weight of the massive pack upon her shoulder. Though she hadn't had the good 'fortune' of being whimsied away just yet, the forest had done her few favors. People were right when they mentioned how the path was a mess. It twisted and turned, sometimes vanishing completely. Not to mention, the wind had picked up as well. The chill of the Autumn breeze had been pleasant at first, and yet now all it brought was a runny nose and constant shivering. Even worse, from what Len could see at least, the sun was quickly setting. Though she had a sleeping bag with her, the idea of spending the night alone in the creepy forest wasn't exactly something she was keen upon.
"Ugh." With yet another groan she'd slow down to a stop, an ivory-toned hand brushing away a strand of raven hair. Thankfully, she'd at least bundled up a bit. Her long raven hair had been tied back into a simpe bun and hidden beneath a knit cap. Further down, a simple wool coat was wrapped around form alongside long scarf that covered up much of her neck. A pair jeans and hiking boots accompanied the ensemble, and upon the girl's back was a massive pack filled to the brim with a variety of essentials. Though not exactly massive, Len was hardly petite either. Standing at 5'4, years spent on the swim team back in high school had done a fine job at toning her body. As bag as the pack was, she was able to carry it fairly decently.
Wincing as another breeze struck her, the girl trying her best not to shiver, she'd begin to move again. The only sound being her own footsteps and the occasional cry from a distant animal, the young lady could only wonder just how far she was from exiting the woods. It'd already been hours, hadn't it? She had be coming up near the end...she just had too. There was no way she was going to be spending the night in such a place.
Yet, she had no luck. Minutes passed, and the sun above continued to grow dangerously close to the horizon. What little light remained was nothing more than a dim orange glow, and with no end in sight the girl could feel her heart sinking all the more. Maybe she'd stepped off the path by accident? Maybe she was completely lost? The mere thought was enough to make her stomach squirm, her already pale features growing all the more chalky. No, no that was ridiculous...absolutely ridiculous.
And yet.
"Great. Just great." Why couldn't she had just taken the highway instead? Sure, it wasn't as 'adventurous' the worst thing she'd have to worry about was getting splashed by the cars. Why was she so d-
"Huh." Within a split-second the girl came to a sudden stop, her prior misgivings instantly vanishing as her eyes fell across something she had not been expecting. "What in the..."
At the end of the path, nestled between the trees, was a house. Common sense would've dictated keeping a fair distance, and yet...
"Hello?" Shifting the weight of her pack once more, Len took a few steps forward. "Um, is anyone in there?!" Her voice bounced among the trees, and if someone really was in the house then Len knew that they would've had to have heard her. Hopefully, at least.
