Since the beginning of time, ethereal ley lines criss-crossed around the Earth, marked and measured by supernatural phenomenon. Ley lines were still largely unknown to the world, even in the 21st century, modernization dismissing the idea of invisible ethereal forces as impossible. The lines were numerous, and would bleed magical energies to be absorbed by the living things that spent their lives around them. All living things, mortal men, animals, plants, were affected by the energy that ran off of the ley lines, often in ways that defied reality. Understanding them was a science of their own, an art that faded into obscurity since the Industrial Revolution. Enough ley lines tied together on a certain point would create a nexus, a never ending font of power that could give a steady supply of energy. A nexus would always have a small city or town build around them, often home to churches, shrines, monasteries, and temples that stayed vigilant. They were the reason the town was there, to sustain human lifestyle as invisible battles were fought to keep the wealth of magic in check. No one must have uncontested control over a place of power such as these, human or otherwise.
The Circle was a particular nexus that had been kept guarded for decades. It was one, if not the most powerful nexus there was, due to many ley lines connected to a small, circular ley line that tied many others together like a central hub. A town flourished there, named Stadt Haven. The Circle was desired by many, and had many uses for those who could claim it, but was protected by several septs and defenders of humanity, none fiercer than the Order of the Circle Rose, an ancient collaboration of nuns and exorcists that would create Witch Hunters. Witch Hunters were magical girls, holy maidens, and radiant with the ethereal energy from the ley lines, augmented by their purity. The Order discreetly ran the town, ensuring petty human interests wouldn't interfere with the protection of the nexus. While they trained their warriors, they also provided education, boarding, and work, to give them a normal life.
Lena Menela was 17, the youngest of a five woman team that was charged to stamp out monsters. A group of orphans, raised together under the watchful eye of the order, were brought together due to the raw power they seemed to inherit. The girls were brought here, given training, and assigned the title of Jaeger. They grew up together, made their own little club, forged an unbreakable friendship, and were also trained to be deadly killers, specialists in slaying monsters and demons. This five girl squad of Witch Hunters were what the Order sent only for tough resistance, such as when a monster nest needed to be busted. A Jaeger was formidable alone, terrifying in a pair, and unstoppable when all in a group. They were the best the Witch Hunters could possibly train and groom.
Lena was by no means a leader. Rather, she was a pleaser, trying to help everyone, put their needs above hers, always afraid she was wrong. Yet, today she walked the streets alone in the city. The stone buildings and brick streets of Stadt Haven were eerily silent tonight, but she payed it no mind. After having an argument with one of her friends, she stormed out, not wanting to escalate the situation any further. Wandering the alleys in thought, she pondered to herself, sighing, determining how to best fix the situation.
