May had flown out of the door to escape her brother's wrath with out thought to the coming storm. She could still hear her brother's voice screaming behind her as runs down the dirt road in front of the house. He hadn't followed her out of the house but stood in the door way shaking his fist at her with dire warnings of the beating she would get when she returned. May runs for all she is worth. Her lungs burning and her chest aching as she is forced to stop because of the stitch in her side. Massaging the sharp pain in her side as she stands nearly doubled over on the road to town.
As she stands there waiting for her side to ease she looks down the road that leads to the town where she knows her father could more than likely be found drowning his sorrows in one place or another. May knows that he would be no help to her. More than likely she would find more trouble in his company than if she had just stayed home and dealt with her brothers wrath. Moving to the side of the road may takes a moment to think about her next move. It had begun to rain. Small drops of water falling around her soaking into the light cotton of her white blouse and navy blue skirt. Her leather shoes are soaked in moments as the light rain begins to come down harder and thunder makes the ground rumble.
Knowing she has to get out of the rain but unwilling to go into town to her father or back to her brother she turns off the road and runs towards the sandy coast of the ocean. Her small feet flying over the ground as she hurries towards a secret place she remembered going to as a little girl. She hoped that she could remember how to get to the little cove. As she runs the light rain has turned into a torrential down poor. The rain drops like small stones pelting her as she makes her way to what she hopes will be a safe place to ride out the storm away from her family.
Breaking thru the surrounding tree's she steps out onto the beach. Taking a moment to pull her soaked shoes off she runs bare foot along the sand looking for the cove she had once discovered. But the rain is falling so hard she can't see more than a few feet in front of her. When she stops to take a few breaths and looks around her she notices she has come the wrong way. Moving away from the popular sandy beach and tree's. The tree's sparse now she notices the mountain side and what looks to be what she very much hopes is a cave in the side hidden partially behind a few tree's and boulders. Not stopping to think she runs for the opening she has discovered. Praying no wild animals had the same idea of escaping the rain there as well.
Reaching the entrance of the cave she goes inside just enough to be out of the rain before she stops and turns to look outside. Great full that the cave while dark and a bit dank was mostly dry. Lightening rips across the darkening sky and a few seconds later loud thunder rumbles the earth seeming all the louder inside the cave. Pushing her black curls out of her face. She gathers it in her hands and wrings it out before doing her best to braid and tying it off with a small blue ribbon. She turns and looks into the dark cavern of the cave wondering if she dares to go any deeper into the darkness. Feeling slightly braver than she probably should she moves further into the cave until she finds a group of large rocks and boulders. Taking a seat she begins to wring out her skirt and blouse great full that no one is around to see her in such wretched conditions.
May tries her best to get as dry as she can inside the dark cave. Her five foot five frame trembling with cold as she wishes for a warm fire to curl up near. She looks around the cave floor noticing that the moisture of the sea air and the rain has made everything damp. Not that it matters she has no way of starting a fire anyways. Closing her slate gray eyes and rubbing them with the heal of her hands as she shivers in the cool air of the cave. Pulling her feet up onto the boulder she hugs her legs to her chest and lays her head on her knee's. Crushing her firm round breasts against her thighs as she tries to make herself as warm as possible.
The silence inside the cave only interrupted by the sound of the rain outside . Suddenly May rethinks the intelligence of running out here to escape her family. Maybe it would have been better to just return home and try to deal with her brother and wait for her drunken father to come stumbling home.
