The weary and exhausted form of twenty-three year old Mary Alice forced her feet to move. The sounds of the subway arriving echoed into her ears, causing an inward sigh of relief to resound in her mind. She had finished another long day at both her college and internship at a law office. Her hands and feet especially ached and right now, she was more than content with the thought of being able to go home and relax.
It was around 9 PM on a chilly Friday night. As the doors opened, she stepped inside. A bag was around her left shoulder. Inside were her books and binders that contained all the assignments which, thankfully, weren't due for another few days. But she always liked to get a head start and after unwinding for a bit, she would begin on those.
As the doors to the subway closed, her blue eyes began to gaze at the night sky of Chicago, Illinois. The city wasn't perfect by any means and did tend to have it's streak of crime every now and again. But that was actually one of the reasons she had taken up learning about Law; to try to make it a better city to live in. It truly was a beautiful place to live in. Just sometimes, people could find ... unappealing individuals.
And while every city had such people, she had a firm belief that cities and towns should have such individuals to a minimum if possible. There were other motives for her desire to go into the field of law. One, in fact, was a very personal incentive.
Mary Alice had began dating and going out with boys at sixteen. Most she dumped after a few weeks as most tried to rush things far too quickly for her tastes. One had the fortune - misfortune in the young girl's case - of raping her when she had been a week away from turning eighteen. He did get arrested, of course. But admittedly, his sentence hadn't been fair enough, not to Mary Alice's mind. Five years just wasn't enough time for a rapist to be behind prison.
Admittedly, it was nerve-wracking now that her mind began to think about it. The five year mark was soon approaching. Maybe she could speak to the judge about an appeal for the bastard? Her head shook no as she forced herself to forget of the flashbacks.
"Not going to do you any good now." She murmured to herself, taking a breath to calm herself.
After watching the buildings pass by her through the window, her hands moved down to the bag as Mary Alice grabbed her MP3 player and activated a playlist. Slipping the earphones into place, her eyes slowly closed as her hand found a rail above her and began to hang on. As the lyrics to Hinder's "Better Than Me" repeated in her ears, she began to hum to them softly.
