"Late, too late, far, far too late. I should have caught a taxi..." muttered Jennifer Simmons as she ducked into the shelter by the subway station. She glanced out at the road, hoping to see the familiar shape of a taxi's 'For Hire' sign through the driving rain but there were no cars on the road at this time of night, let alone taxis.
She hadn't meant to stay late at work but the deadline for the accounts had passed at midday and she knew that she only had until midnight to submit them to the client before they moved their business to another firm. As the account manager for that particular firm, she had no choice but to sacrifice another night at home for the good of the company. What she had not expected was the sudden downpour and the complete absence of cabs. She had run to the subway station knowing that at least they had one that ran once an hour, even into the small hours.
She stumbled down the stone steps, heels clicking as she did her best to smooth out the lines in her suit, knowing full well that her blouse was soaked. She pulled the jacket closer around her body, the wet blouse sticking to her skin. Not for the first time she wished she had brought a coat with her and worn the trousers rather than the skirt. There was a rumbling sound and her heart sank as she ran the last few steps, praying that her heels did not give way.
Staggering out onto the platform she saw the lights of the last train disappear into the tunnel. Jennifer swore loudly and slumped onto one of the rusty seats, knowing that she was going to be stuck here for another hour.
