It had been a long trip, and certainly not an easy one for them. After weeks of running from the mobs, they'd made it into the US, even as far as Nevada, just outside the famous city of Las Vegas. After the unfortunate coincidence of witnessing a mob "collection" that had gotten too violent, he and his mother had packed and fled for their lives. They hadn't had time to wait for legal immigration, crossing the border fearing for their lives and trying to get a bit farther than the typical California so that they wouldn't be followed or sought.
Thankfully, Marcus had been studying English in school, so it hadn't taken him too long to learn the language well enough to at least pass for a legitimate Mexican-American. No one had suspected anything of him and his mother yet. Now they had to find work somewhere, searching the city for anyone willing to hire them.
On the street, he was approached by a man about mid-50's, who asked him what he was looking for. He told him that he and his mother were living together and seeking work, leaving out the rest of their situation lest he exploit it. The man informed them he had a particular need for two people about their respective ages, with "generous" pay and gave them an address to visit later that evening to discuss. Stunned, Marcus practically fell to his knees thanking the man as he ran to their motel room to inform his mother.
