'Thanks?'

When I was looking at the (right) corner of my screen, I saw the 'Thanks' and other things below it. What is that for exactly? Is there some sort of button I need to press to give a 'thanks'? Because I saw others have some numbers besides it and wondered there was some sort of button?...Thanks.
