The non-descript dark brown Ford pick-up truck slid to a stop down the block from Collin and Jodie Meeks' suburban home. It had been there before, off and on, the last two weeks or so, at different times, although usually late at night. Martin had been careful not to be noticed by the occasional police car thar might patrol the toney neighborhood. He had rented another vehicle, a Toyota sedan, his first week, and traded it out for a Dodge van the second.
This wasn't the only area he'd watching. There was a law office in a skyscraper downtown he'd kept tabs on during his mission. He found he could walk into the office almost once a day, delivering packages, dressed as a courier, bringing in water bottles for the fountains, and would hardly be noticed. A few casual conversations with a receptionist or secretary, and he'd found out what he needed to know. Fortunately, Collin Meeks need not be a factor in his plans, after all. Martin had come to town prepared to deal with Collin however necessary to accomplish his aims, but the attorney had to make a ten-day trip on company business. He'd be out of town, hundreds of miles away, giving Martin complete freedom to go about his business without interference.
Martin Provost's aim had nothing to do with Collin Meeks, after all. His reason, his only reason for being in this city so far from home was Jodie, Collin's wife of almost two years. Martin didn't think of her in those terms, of course. She wasn't anyone else's wife. She was his, snd always had been and always would be. Since he met her in college, where he was the big football stud and she the lovely - no, beautiful - underclassman, he knew she belonged to him, the same way his mother had belonged to his father. To honor, serve, and obey. True, she hadn't seen it that way, and broke up with him even before he left to play pro ball in the European leagues. After three years, he returned with a nice nest egg, ready to enjoy the life he wanted, which included the girl he wanted. "Wanted" didn't necessarily mean "loved"; Martin's feelings were more that he'd decided to possess her and make her the companion he deserved. He would teach her how to be his, and, over time she would learn.
The first act was to be played out tonight (or this morning, actually, as it was well after midnight). Collin was gone and Jodie was alone in her house. Yesterday, he had found a ground-level basement window and jimmied it open. Tonight he need only slip in and make his way to Jodie's bedroom, and then her lessons would begin.
