Nineteen-year-old Vera was tying on her apron, getting ready for her first full day at the diner. Luckily, they didn't require any training, but that being said, she did lie to them about her work experience... Her hair was freshly dyed, making her looking so different from the once blond heiress of New York. She had it tied in a very loose braid, and beneath her apron, she wore a white long-sleeved shirt, jeans, and a pair of grey converse sneakers. Her attire was much more casual that what she was used to, but that was the point. In Louisiana, she was just supposed to be a young girl working hard enough to make rent and pay bills (she's currently staying in an extended stay motel until she can afford an apartment deposit), not the daughter of the Mayor of New York.... This was the beginning of a new life - of freedom- and while it might not be glamorous, she was ready for it.

Walking across the small diner, Vera approached the booth the Jason just sat in. She gave him a smile that said she had not worked long enough to be tired and bitter, and pulled her notepad out. "Hi," she said, "I'm Penny." She studied him for a moment, noticing that he was quite handsome in a striking sort of way. While she had met a lot of handsome people through her family, she had never seen someone quite like him with those big green eyes... "What can I start you off with?"

26 year old Jason Vinetti sighed softly as he sank into the booth, shifting in his seat to make sure that the window at his back allowed the sun to hit his back, feeling in a better mood even as the black of his t-shirt soaked of the sun. Glancing around him he took in what was around him, and while he knew having a window at his back was potentially dangerous, the man also trusted that a little backwater town wouldn’t have that many people willing to jump through a window to hurt a stranger.

Starting a little as he looked up at the waitress at the same moment he pushed his dark sunglasses up into his hair, glad that his eyes had started to change. Yet. Though the man was aware of just how many changes his body had gone through the years, he was equally glad that there was only one physical manifestation of it, and the slightly longer canine teeth could easily be passed off as just a accidental mutation instead of purposeful tinkering with his genetic makeup.

“Coffee please. And some eggs and bacon.”He said his voice holding a whisper of a accent, easily picked out among the southern state, the man held a hint of the north, that spoke of the wildness of montana, the soaring skies of Colorado, though it had been years since he’d been either. He’d been just a child since he’d been there, but his voice was the only thing he had left of a life he’d known before, and he clung to it out of desperation to not become the man they wanted him to be.

Looking up at the beautiful woman waiting on him, he smiled wider, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. Looking flirty and pleased with having such a beautiful woman waiting on him he smiled. though it was hard for the man to reach through the ice cold walls he'd built to make sure that he survived what was done to him, he knew that he had to, otherwise the people around him would know that something was wrong with him, and that would make him stand out to the people hunting him. and he couldn't have that. So he'd work at being normal, even if he did indeed feel the draw of sexual heat pouring through his body at the sight of the beautiful woman, he was used to ignoring what he was actually feeling, and knew that he had to let down the walls some, if he wanted to survive and be free.

Vera tilted her head to the side at the sound of his accent. "You from Colorado?" she said, reaching down to take his menu. It was easy for her decipher, for her family used to vacation there during the Christmas holidays. Not only that, but Vera rarely knew when to not ask questions or make accusations, and she most definitely never apologized for doing so either. Giving him a smile, she nodded to the kitchen. "I'll go put your order in and get your coffee."

A few minutes later, she returned with his coffee and went about waiting on another table. However, she couldn't managed to focus on them nearly as much as she should. With the handsome man in the booth to her left, she had a hard time concentrating.

When his food was ready, she brought it over to him and placed his meal on the table. "Do you not have anyone meeting you here?" she asked, because she couldn't wrap her brain around the idea of this man not having someone to eat with... As she asked the question, one of the veteran waitresses groaned, and the others giggled. They all knew that Jason was a regular, always in by himself, and he never spoke more than three words to any of them. However, it wasn't a surprise that the new young girl on staff was prying a bit. They weren't dumb - he was gorgeous.

“Yes.”Jason said simply, letting her take the menu as he returned to looking around the restaurant with the vague look that said he wasn’t really seeing the room around him….at least until you realized that the man kept watching vera while she worked. Not so much because she was attractive, though she was, she was new, and new things to Jason were a curiosity and something to be evaluated until he decided how much of a threat it was going to be to him.

Reaching for his fork as she set his meal in front of him, he started eating, dismissing her from his thoughts, freezing with the fork halfway to his mouth at her words. Not so much because he was going to answer, but because of his surprise that she was sticking around to talk after he was sure he made it clear to everyone that he had no desire to nurture friendships or make himself fit in better in the town beyond making sure that he didn’t stand out as a genetic fuckup. He didn’t care what others thought of the cold and distance, as long as they didn’t realize just how very…inhuman he was.

“No.”he said simply before taking a bite of food, realizing that she wasn’t going anywhere, and bent his usual rule of not talking more to them. Just a bit anyways.”Go away. I’ll summon you if I need something.”he said, not so much friendly, but with the tone of a barbarian king issuing orders. He might not be a king, but the man was closer to being a true barbarian then modern man had been in awhile. He might be gorgeous, but there was a lethalness waiting under that pretty package.

You would have thought Vera had been slapped across the face, and for a moment, she just stood there. However, unlike the other waitresses who always remained polite and stayed their distance, she did not walk away. Instead, her look of shock was replace with one of anger, and she cocked her head to the side in a way that said she was not used to being spoken to in such a way. "Excuse me?" she snapped, "When you summon me? I am not your maid, Asshole, and this is 2013 -"

"Penny! What are you doing? Sir? I'm so sorry for her speaking to you in such a way," the manager sputtered, rushing over to Vera and Jason. The managed took her by the arm, and Vera flinched, looking up at him with red cheeks.

"But he was rude!"

The manager jerked her backward, making her stumble, and the rest of the guests (there were only three) in the diner turned to look at her. "Quiet," he snapped, then turned to Jason, "Your breakfast is on us, Sir... And you." He narrowed his eyes at Vera. "You're fired. Gather your things."

"Wh-what?" Her eyes widened. Fuck. She needed this job... In fact, she needed the tip money today so that she could pay for another night at the hotel. Otherwise, she would be sleeping in her car for the night.

"You heard me," he snapped, "Out."

Jason raised his head at the realization that the woman wasn’t getting away from him, those green eyes studying her as she yelled at him, the coldness that filled them saying he was about to say something very, very rude when the manager interrupted. Watching the scene he tilted his head just a little, like a curious animal watching the other wildlife around him.

“Don’t.Not for this.”Jason said simply watching them tilting his head towards the manager to make sure he'd gotten his point, already returning to eat his breakfast.not so much because he cared that she was fired or not, but because the person he had been as a child, wanted to be as a adult would have cared. The fact that he didn’t left him feeling even more cold and isolated then he had when he sat down. Shifting he leaned to rest his back against the glass he let the sun warm his body, feeling the warmth seeping into his bones, before looking at the two standing at the end of his table, “Move.”he said simply, making a motion that he wanted to get up.

Vera looked at the man curiously, not sure what to think. The manager also looked flustered, taking his hand off her arm.

They moved, letting him get up. The manager huffed and glared down at Vera. "Your attitude better improve, or you're out. Do you understand?"

Stubbornly, Vera nodded and moved away from him, going over to the booth next to Jason's to start cleaning it up. It was clear that she was frustrated, but relieved. She needed the money, and even though it was a bad day, she had to calm down and take it with stride.

"Sorry," she grumbled to Jason as he stood, wiping down the other table. It was clear that she was, in no way, sorry for what she said. However, she knew that he'd be back, and she might as well get used to him.

Jason paused in the middle of moving to leave, looking down at the woman who was so obviously still riled up about him nearly getting her fired. Shrugging he decided that no words would be needed, after all, he could convey a lot of things with just a motion, and when he could he did. So he easily conveyed that he didn’t care if she was sorry or not, just if she stayed away from him. Heading for the door he sighed, wondering just what to do next. He knew he’d have to find something, soon, to make money, but he had no idea what to do. It wasn’t like genetically changed assassins were on the top of the list to be factory workers or such. Giving himself a frustrated sigh he walked away.

But within hours he was back, making his way to his normal table by the window, settling in to get lunch. Running his fingers through his dark hair as he settled at his table he shoved the dark frustration that made him want to lash out at everyone around him until someone bled deep down, locked under chains of icy control as he tried to not hate himself for what he was, and what he could never be.

Eyes wandering over the lunch crowd he let the sun warm him as he considered what he was going to be having for lunch.

"Back so soon?"

Vera was standing in front of him once again, looking a lot calmer after getting the extreme reprimanding she got from the manager. "Look, I'm sorry, I'll stay out of your way and get your food. Blah, blah, blah," she mumbled, taking out her notepad, "What is it that I can get you?"

Her eyebrows raised at him, clearly not intimidated by his silence. Not like the others. It was hard to intimidate Vera, to the point that she got herself in a lot of trouble from time to time.

All of the sudden, she heard her name, except it wasn't "Penny" that was being called. Her head whipped around, and she noticed that the small television on the wall was a news report... about her. One the TV, her parents were being interviewed about her disappearance. Shit. This was not good... Not good at all.

Quickly, she walked over to the television, turned the channel, and walked back over to Jason. However, she didn't do it quick enough, because a picture of Vera appeared on the television right before she turned the channel - a blond version of the woman standing before him.

"Sorry," she grumbled, "What can I get for you?"

Jason just looked at her, giving her a look that said obviously he was back for lunch seeing as she was talking to him. Looking slightly startled as the woman walked away from him before his eyes shifted to the tv he listneed, wondering what had caused her sudden change, even as his mind spit out the connection to the blond woman he was seeing. Staring at her for a long moment he tried to decide if he was insane or not. Shrugging mentally as he realized that even if she was the one on tv, considering that he was hiding, he couldn’t chance outing her. Even if her family seemed genuinely worried, he wouldnt draw attention to himself.

“Ribs and a coke.”He said simply already reaching for the book out of his bag, leaning the stupid pointless fiction book against the table as he stared to read. While the plot was basic, and bored him to tears, he also knew that it was better to try and fit in, and most people would consider reading over lunch when one was alone, normal.

Vera nodded and took his order, watching as he brought out his books. She pressed her lips together. Hm. That didn't look like the sort of literature that I a guy like him would read, but whatever. Why did she care? Sighing, she moved to the kitchen, put in his order, and brought back his drink and some silverware. And, just as the manager instructed, she didn't say a word to him. She simply brought his food and check, told him thank you, then went about the rest of her shift...

After dark, Vera stood in front of her car and looked inside the hood. Of course, her car decided that it wasn't going to cooperate. That was probably because she traded her BMW in for a 98' Pontiac on her way down south. It seemed smart at the time. The clunker wouldn't be suspicious to those who were looking for her, and she got a whole lot of cash for the BMW too. Enough to live off of... Too bad she's spent most of it on keeping the Pontiac running... of course.

Sighing, she threw her bag over her shoulder and started to walk to dark, lonely road toward the motel she was stay in, trying desperately not to get scared. It wasn't that she was not a brave girl, but it was after midnight in a small town with very little lighting... As each car drove by, she attempted to walk a little faster.

Jason was on his way back into town from another frustrating evening of searching to make himself a part of the town that would always be beyond him he sensed. Frustrated and tired he roared past her on the Harley before stopping, slowing at the sight of the girl walking, cursing himself before he turned around and drove back. He might be cold, but the man was also honorable and his honor demanded that he get a vulnerable woman off the streets as soon as he could.

“Do you need a ride?”He asked simply as he stopped the bike near her, he pulled off the helmet as he watched her walk towards him.

When the motorcycle turned around and stopped beside her, Vera immediately jumped and yelped, thinking it was someone about to snatch her up and rape her...

At the sight of him, she sighed. Of course he had a motorcycle, just adding to his mysterious demeanor and making him even more frustratingly sexy. "Oh, you," she said, taking a step toward him. Out of all the people in this small little town, he was the one to drive by her and feel obligated to give her a ride. And as badly as she wanted to turn it down (she was stubborn as a mule), she was scared of the road a head, and she had at least seven more miles to go.

"Yea, a ride would be nice," she said, taking another step forward, "I'm staying in the motel a few miles that way."

Jason raised his eyebrows at her reaction, his expression saying that even if his honor had had him stopping, he was still able to leave if she was going to be rude to him. Shifting a little as she stepped forward he held out the helmet. “put it on.”He said at her words, gesturing towards the back of the bite to let her get on, shuddering a little as the woman got on the back of the bike. Shuddering a little at the warm body pressing close to him he resisted the urge to lean back into her to warm up on the cold night, smiling slightly. “Hold on.”He said simply as he shifted to get the bike going, sighing in peace as the motorcycle roared and headed for the motel.

Pulling into the parking lot he glanced back at her as he shut off the bike, waiting for her to get off. While he might have picked her up, he still wasn't a people person or someone who was overly comfortable at having someone at his back that he didn't know. having fought the instinct to toss her off the whole ride.

Vera took note at how warm he was, and she held on tight. She had never been on the back of a motorcycle, and the feeling was so... freeing. It was magic, really. She loved it.

When they got to the motel parking lot, she swung one leg over and plopped down off the bike. Taking off the helmet, she shook out her messy hair and handed it to him. "Thanks," she said with a smile, a smile that said she had gotten over how rude he was to her at the diner. Glancing back at the motel, she sighed and turned back to him. "Are you coming in for breakfast tomorrow morning? See... I don't have a ride to work, if you didn't mind swinging by, I can make sure your breakfast is paid for." She raised her eyebrows, hoping he'd say yes. "My car is on the fritz, and it's going to take a little more than tip money to get it back on the road.

Jason took the helmet, tilting his head a little.”Your welcome.”he said simply as he watched her, raising a eyebrow at her question before shrugging, a shrug that could have meant anything from ‘what do you think I am, a taxi?’ to ‘okay, I’ll pick you up.’ “See you tomorrow.”He said as he pulled on the helmet, already turning the bike to leave.

But even with the ambiguous shrug from the night before, in the morning Jason was waiting for her when she appeared at the motel door, holding a extra helmet up,nodding a slight good morning though he didn’t voice the words. He might not say it, but the man was trying to work on being less…cold. There was no chance he could totally unfreeze the viciousness that went bone deep, but he could try. So greeting her with a vague good morning was his best shot at it.

Vera had to admit, she was a bit surprised that he showered up. After walking down the stairs of the motel, she smiled and took the extra helmet. "Thanks," she said, sliding on the bike behind him and wrapping her arms around his middle. He was a mysterious man, much more so than she was used to. He wasn't like the kind of men she saw in her family's circle of friends at New York... and she liked it, in an odd sort of way. He infuriated her with his silence, but at the same time, it fed to her curiosity.

When they arrived at the diner, she handed him her helmet and fixed her hair back into a loose braid. As she tied her apron on, she glanced up at him. "Do you want me to put in the same breakfast order as yesterday?" she asked, "And coffee, I assume?"

Meanwhile, inside the diner, everyone was watching the two of them with wide eyes. None of them had managed to get five words out of him, and her was the new girl, riding in to work on the back of his motorcycle - the same new girl who called him an "asshole" the morning before.

Jason nodded a little at her thabks shifting a little as the woman wrapped her arms arounf him, leaning back into her a littlr. Letting her warmth warm him even ig he was warm, bring mostly cold blooded meant he didn't stay warm for long. Tugging off his helmet he put both on thr bars of the motorcylce as he got up. Nodding at her question he followed her indide, muttering a soft thanks as he held open the door for her.

Raising a eyebrow as he saw everyone watching them he smirked daring them to say something as he headed for his usual table.

Vera moved into the the diner, quickly putting in his order and grabbing a cup of coffee. She ignored the looks from the other waitresses and brought him his coffee and the news paper, noticing from the day before that he liked things to read while he ate alone. However, she had not noticed that it was her picture (Well, the blond version of her.) on the front page next to an article about her disappearance. Now that she had been gone for nearly two weeks, people were starting to panic and rumors were starting to fly. Was she kidnapped? Murdered? Was she sent away?

After a few minutes, Vera returned with a plate of eggs, bacon, and toast. "It's on me," she said, smiling, "I'll be right over there if you need anything." She said, nodding to the pay phone. "I've got to call and get my car picked up. Lord knows how much it will be to fix." With that, she sighed and turned for the phone.

Jason nodded his thanks for the food, sipping his coffee as he read the paper, raising a eyebrow as he looked at the main article. Looking at his food before he glanced up at her, looking bemused. “okay.”he said simply as he returned to the paper, reading because he wasn’t about to bring up something he’d noticed in public, at least not when it was obvious she was trying to hide.

But he needed to know if the woman was here looking for him discreetly at behest of her father, or if it was the world’s biggest coincidence. It worried him, to consider that this pretty girl had been sent to see if he was really in this town, and even more worrying because he thought he’d hidden well.

Only a few minutes went by, and her car could be seen being towed from the parking lot. Vera let out a frustrated sigh as she watched it drive away. Great. There was no way she was going to be able to afford to get that piece of shit fixed for good. Not only this kind of salary... And she really hated the idea of having to ask for a ride again. While he was nice to do it, she wasn't sure that he was nice enough to do it again.

When Vera returned to check up on her, her eyebrows scrunched together. "You haven't touched your food," she said, nodding to his still full plate. Leaning over, she moved to fill his coffee cup, and when she did, her eyes landed on the article he was looking at. When she saw the picture of her self, she gasped and looked up at him. "Fuck," she said, shaking her head, "You were sent here for me, weren't you?"

She straightened up to look at him, her eyes narrowing. "What are you? CIA? I knew it. I knew that it was too big of a coincidence that you ate here for every meal, and that you just happened to drive by when I was walking home last night. Shit." She swallowed hard, shaking her head. She wasn't sure why she thought she'd get away with it... But of course, she was wrong, and not only was she jumping to conclusions, but she told him exactly who she was.

Jason shrugged a little as he nibbled on his food at her words, before starting, looking so surprised at her words that it was obvious he hadn’t been expecting to be attacked. Obvious that the woman had cracked his usual icy cold on his expressions he stared up at her in bemusement, trying to figure out what to answer. While he had been trained by the CIA, after….after her father’s experiments he’d been pulled out of active duty. But the training, the easiness of slipping into a crowd having allowed him to disappear when he needed to.

“….I have to go.”He said standing, now that he knew who she was, he had to figure out what to do. And he couldn’t do that with her sitting here yelling at him. Standing, he shoved her back enough to make his way towards the door.

Vera stumbled backwards as he shoved past her, but it wasn't long before the stubborn girl caught her footing and was running after him. Despite the fact that her manager was yelling after her, she pushed through the front door of the diner and ran after the quiet, mysterious man. "Hey!" she snapped, "You didn't answer me!" She looked desperate to know if he was going to turn her in to her parents, and she wanted "Please! I can't go back there. You have to understand, I can't go back... I left for a good reason."

She swallowed hard, watching him and hoping that he would at least assure her that he wasn't going to turn her in.

Jason glared at the man who’d made him stop, his annoyance so great at being disturbed that it had cracked his steely control. Swallowing hard as he felt his fangs lengthening a little in response to his anger, holding onto the slippery ends of his temper that urge him to strike out, to treat her as a threat, one that would be easily eliminated. Looking down at her with eyes just starting to shift into a serpent’s, the change still settling into his body, slightly oblong puplis, though not enough that anyone would pick them up as anything but human, the man resisted simply killing her.

“I’m not here for you.”He said simply taking a step back, needing the space before he reacted like a threatened serpent, his honor and control in shreds at being bombarded with her questions, his own questions demanding answers, the most important one being how safe he was. Needing to get his feet back under him before he did anything else, he needed to figure out what to do.

Vera bit her lip and shook her head. "Please, you don't have to go," she said, "You can stay. Eat. I just... I was just afraid that you were here to take me back to my parents, and I just can't afford that." Reaching out, she took his arm, not realizing exactly how dangerous her move was. "I'm sorry for lashing out. Stay... I don't even know your name." She blushed a bit, realizing she took a ride from a man (twice) on a motorcycle without even knowing his name. Shit. Maybe she was a bit reckless, just like her mother said.
