The town of Riverpass, as the name implies, was situated on a river. The crystal clear water flowed through the middle of the town, running over the smooth pebbles of the riverbed and down a small hill into the surrounding dense woodlands. It was fair to say it was a small, isolated town, a surprise that it had survived this long. People knew of it as a cursed town, few people wanting to live there and those that did to afraid to leave. The curse they speak of is a creature known only as The Monster.
The Monster hadn’t been seen for hundreds of years, its true form and origins a mystery to many. The idea most of the townsfolk go with is that it was one a powerful sorcerer, attempting to use magic to manipulate his body, but it backfired, turning him into an undying monstrosity in both mind and soul. It is also a mystery as to how the ritual of sacrifice came to happen, but happen it does.
The sacrifice is to be the most beautiful woman in the village, and in return the creature will leave the rest of the village alone and even protect them. To decide this a beauty contest is held, a happy occasion in most places but a sorrowful one in this village. And so it is that every summer the contest is held and the women in this town hope and pray that they will not be the most beautiful, for they know that no sacrifice has ever returned from god knows what horrors await them.
