Cale
The world seemed so peaceful now. It had been a number of years since Cale had been left alone in this world. His family along with what he guessed was the entire population of earth had disappeared over night, leaving only him alive. Even now as he walked through the small sub urban area's and towns that humanity had left along the west coast of the united states he was surprised that he hadn't seen anything or anyone in years. Cale was now 24, he had been a student at seattle university when the event as he had chosen too call it had happened, leaving him alone in a city that had once housed over 10,000 people.
Those first few days had been rather maddening in their own right. Running through streets, trying too find family or friends in a city. Driving his car up and down the familiar roads. It had now been 4 years since then, and the roads had changed. At first the city had power, and the markets had food. Food he had no problem in taking when he realized there was no need for money. Now he carried a back pack with can's and other supplies he could find. He had gotten good at scavenging not that he ever felt he needed too. As he walked over the cracks in the road he gave a small sigh looking over a hill as he watched several more broken down towns. Tree's and over grown grass. Once again he had found absolutely nothing. Homes like these broke down after a few years of not using them. Things molded, and the dust piled up, making them hard too breath in. Whats more the water pipes rusted. Still as he found a house that had a wall mostly gone exposed too the outside world. It was better then nothing.
They said that humans had been social creatures, and that peoples minds would start too wear after only a hand full of days without contact with another human. Cale had never felt lonely before the event, at least he doubted he did now that he knew what real loneliness felt like. Cale had let himself go in many respects. He had stopped cutting his hair, letting it grow long, and about 3 weeks ago he had officially stopped shaving, giving him a light brown grizzled jaw too match his face. He wore shoes, only because he didn't like the feeling of bare gravel and soil under his feet, pants and shirt if only because of the sun.
Walking into the home He dropped his bag not caring as he heard the clatter of the cans of food, and bottles of alcohol. It had surprised him really how well the stuff kept, though it became a precious resource for cleaning out wounds, and at times setting things on fire. With humans gone from the face of the world, new threats came into being. Wild dogs, and zoo animals were his personal favorites. His arm was bandaged from an encounter with a wild panther that had escaped from somewhere.
He flicked the light switch a few times, shaking his head as he took sat down. He should have known better, electricity had died a long time ago. From what he could tell the power plants must have either shut themselves off, or overheated, and melted down. The black outs happened about a month or so after the human race disappeared, and now. Well now it was just Cale. He kicked his feet up onto the Sofa, yawning slightly as he looked out the window. Watching for anything, and everything, that could have crossed his field of vision.
