"Often, this is how I perceive the world around me. In the absence of light, darkness prevails"---Pulcher Femina

It seemed that the heavens rained down fire the night they arrived...

It began as a simple news report: “Breaking news special report. Tonight an unpredicted meteor shower lit the night sky up across the world...”

Some say that there was no warning, others say that our leaders knew and sold man kind anyway, by the time the military's of the world mobilized, their slaughter was inevitable, the fact remains, mankind was not prepared...

“Impacts reported all over the world...meteors are crashing onto every continent on the planet. People are instructed to stay in their homes. Into their basements if they have them and remain calm...

Calm...such a stupid word now when we think about it. There we all sat in our homes waiting, hiding, hoping that our Government was going to save us and all the while, mankind remained “calm”....like sheep to the slaughter....

Her eyes big, like a deer in head lights, the reporter gasped as the scene unfolded behind her, “There appears to be something in the meteors! They...They...arent..how can that be, they dont appear to be meteors, its a craft of some kind...small objects...smaller craft are detaching......OH GOD!" as the first blast destroyed several buildings behind her...." RUN! RUN!” images of the giant robot like monstrosity unfolded as the smaller crafts touched down.... The apparently soulless eyes glowing as they stared down at the poor camera crew who were frozen in terror.

Then, a sound filled the air, Whoomp! Whoomp! Whoomp!, sounding like a large rope was being spun overheard. Then from the alien being, a beam of energy shot out and those caught within it suddenly disappeared into a vapor mist....the camera falling to the ground with a perfect picture of what was left of the visitors arm falling in front of the lens before all went black when it was crushed by a metallic foot.... or something like..it. All that was known was that they were there one second then gone the next........

Mankind launched an attack. We fought back....it was useless we were beaten...

“God Damnit! Fire! Fire! Bring that SON OF A BITCH DOWN!” the call went out over the radios as they opened fire on the metallic giants who seemed to barely notice. It was like a swarm of flies, the bullets assaulted the alien fiend who did not even pause to acknowledge the attack. It continued to walk on, destroying and killing all in its path

There was only one choice left....run and hide....

A year later we are getting desperate....there are so few of us left....something needs to be done we are running out of time and dying off....we must....we must.....FIGHT BACK!

-------------------------------------------------------

Eyes watched the alien patrol move slowly down the street, from a well hidden and nearly invisible position laying among the abundance of rubble heaped in piles across the street. Hidden, their bodies covered with an elaborate patchwork of rubble, pieces of boards, associated junk and even a dead dog that laying decomposing on top of Kara's motionless form that emitted an almost unbearable odor. Kara had learned that small things like that tended to discourage the wrong types both alien and human from getting close enough to examine their position's too closely.

Kara didnt even try to discourage the scorpion that climbed on the rock in front of her face as it scrambled around to face her like some predator that was warning her to leave its territory. Ignoring the arachnid, she watched the aliens party move quickly and efficiently into and out of the building's, one by one and Kara could tell that they were experienced in what they were doing and had worked together for awhile. Her finger rested on trigger of her M12 Scarab that controlled the small grenade launcher that rested gracefully below the clip which held the high powered, high velocity rounds.

Behind her, she could hear the light breathing of Kat and Cat, the two young twins that anywhere else in a civil, normal world would be a couple of hot beauties stretching their well built bodies out on a beach towel and gaining admiring looks from the many guys that flocked around them.

Now, they each looked through the high powered scopes that sat on their assault rifles with each of them centering the cross hairs on different targets. Kara had learned long ago that there indeed was some kind of link between twins since she had personally seen the two women, without a word, select and dispatch two creepy Alien bastards and some slimy human types without speaking and she was sure if they had to fire, that there would be two separate and distinct bodies falling to the ground.

It was easy to spot the leader..somehow, it always was as she watched the way it moved and carried herself among their patrol. Wishing she could sigh, or at least make an emotional response, the decision when to fire was going to be hers and hers alone. Her team had come along way and fought many small skirmishes along way, preferring to not engage forces stronger than theirs and only fighting when they forced to do so.

Kara was a firm believer in the law of averages and knew that sooner or later, whether it was intentional or accidental, most of the time it was the latter, there was that one bullet that had your number on it and she preferred the odds to be on her side.

Laying behind their leader, breathing through their mouths to fight the desire to gag, Kat and Cat waited, their bodies absolutely still as they sited, then checked of target after target as the figures moved in and out of sight. Both the girls, identical twins, except for their names had always managed to do everything just alike. Put them a room of clothing and they would come out wearing the same outfits, let one speak, the other would finish the sentence and much to their dismay, let one have a rousing orgasm, the other would enjoy the same pleasurable feelings. Kat wished that Kara would make up her mind, she could feel something crawling between the cleavage of her full breasts and from experience, she knew that it was Cat that had it crawling down her BDU's, but that knowledge didnt help her much since she could feel it also.

Kara had about decided to take a chance and make contact with the group when something caught her attention and she sucked in her breath, and waited...something else moved the rubble that had once been a nice street, in nice town...that was now reduced to rubble and the stench of death....

That day. It started out as any other, so it seemed. Kayla woke up to her normal boring life, getting ready for a normal boring day at her normal boring job. Everything was going exactly like she had thought it would. But everyone knows where they were on that day. Kayla just so happened to be at work, when an eerie silence came over the radio at work.

"Please remain calm. This is not a test. Everyone remain calm." Everyone who was near anything remembers that message, if they remember anything at all. Then came the screaming. It seemed to come from everywhere. Like the world itself was on fire. She would never know what started it, but soon enough the screaming reached the store.

Don't panic. It's funny when you think back on it. did they really think the public wouldn't panic. Sheep is what they were. There was no need to panic, no need to prepare. It was only the end of the world after all. Though it doesn't really matter. Being prepared wouldn't have done the world any good. It was that day. We found out we weren't alone, and not only that we weren't alone, but we were so helplessly out gunned, out manned. Panic. When the war started, that's all anyone could do.

They fought. Of course they fought. The human race isn't one to go down easily. The armies marched, the forces mobilized. But it was all for naught. The aliens swept through the army of earth like it was nothing. We were mere pests in the grand scheme of things. But we couldn't know that then. Or maybe we did. We just refused to believe it. Everything fell. We knew it would. We still call it a war, but it was a slaughter. Buildings crumbled, countries toppled. They took over, and humanity fell.

Or so the aliens though, when the last of the armies fell. But humanity isn't so fickle. There were those who ran, those who hid. Those were all that was left. The future looked bleak, but in reality, when didn't the future look bleak? It had looked bleak before the aliens came. But we wouldn't give up. We would keep fighting, because that's what we do. What we've always done.

It was a normal day. Well, as normal as it can be under the circumstances. Kayla was laying underneath a well disguised hide out. Strewn rubble littered around her and on top of it. The only thing that was visible, that showed that there was anything other than rubble there, was the slightest tip of a gun barrel. She wasn't alone though, not that anyone else would be able to tell. She was flanked by a couple other members of her team, two of her best snipers to be exact. They had their guns trained on the alien patrol. They had been waiting in this place for a couple of days now, the extra time let them make sure they were undetectable by the time the aliens got there.

Sam gave a light sigh. Reminiscing about days past. She was a small girl, maybe 17 years old. She wish she didn't have to fight. Wished she could still be at home, being a normal teenage girl. But there was no such thing anymore. She was the best at what she did. When she shot, she hit what she was aiming at. No questions asked. Right now, she had her gun trained on a target on the far left. They had set up an order of fire, so that they didn't hit the same targets. Her partner, Natasha, would always start on the right. While Kayla would start in the middle. They could take down a patrol like this in a few seconds.

Natasha was around 30, and unlike her younger partner, she didn't wish she was anywhere else. There was no point to wish and think about something that couldn't happen. She just cherished each day she was alive, and did her best to keep her and everyone else that way day after day. Her gun was trained on the alien on the far right, like she had been trained to do. Her finger was on the trigger. They had been watching for about 2 days now, and it was just about time to strike. She knew their leader better than perhaps anyone else in the camp. They were close before this whole thing started, and had only grown closer after.

Out of the corner of their eyes, both Natasha and Sam saw a slight shift in the rubble. It was too subtle to be picked up by untrained eyes. But they both knew what it meant. There was a slightly larger shift in the rubble, from three different places as they got ready. Suddenly, there were a few tiny brief flashes of light, and muffled bangs, drawing the attention of the aliens, before they started dropping. It wasn't a large party. Only about 5 of them, and even though they had heavy armor on, every armor had a weak point. Whiten 7 seconds of the rubble shift, all of the aliens were on the ground, dead.

"Good work girls" Kayla whispered, talking loud was forbidden while on a mission, even if there was nothing nearby. "Lets scavenge and get home" She said, before the rubble shifted, revealing the three females, who swiftly moved down the rubble towards the fallen bodies.

Any soldier can tell you that what in spite of what is portrayed in Hollywood movies, actual battle is much less glamorous and in fact, could be considered downright dis-organized chaos to even the most experienced of those that had fought skirmishes for what seemed almost their whole life. Kara and Cat and Kat, as if tied together by some silent bond, their faces covered in dirt and sweat, would not be considered glamorous like the Hollywood starlets, all squeezed their shots off in practiced and deadly precision. Muttering to herself.. ”damn…” as she peeked over the rocks in front her, noting passively that each recoil of her rifle kicked up small poofs of dust, which could be deadly in any fire fight in that it could call attention to her position.. At the first jerk of the weapon, the small scorpion had decided that fleeing was a better part of valor and skittered out into the street to duck under a large rock, disappearing from view. Slowly, to keep movement down, Kara moved her rifle slowly as she watched her rounds tear through the tough Alien plating causing squeals and chirps of something not human. One by one, the bodies of the confused aliens exploded from the deadly efficient human ammunition.

Just as suddenly as the shooting started, it ended and slowly, the three women crawled out from under the rubble they had been hiding in and began to make their way towards the Alien patrol. One of the two identical twins frowned and looked down at her boot..."Ewwwwww...." a small exclaim came from her lips as the other twin picked up her sentence.."..Alien shit..." the other twin finished it.."now I am going to have clean my boots" and shook the green and red off her boot.

Kara's hand shot out to silence both of them quickly..."sshhh...you know the drill, shoot and scoot...talk later..." and knelt down to examine bits of equipment that had been carried by the patrol that had was scattered around what was left of the alien bodies.... mumbling, Kara picked up a small piece of something..."I hate it when they explode like that...exoskeleton must be higher pressure inside...." before she could finish the sentence. Kara and Cat and Kat all felt the vibration shake the ground causing loose debris to fall from the damaged buildings.

Almost as one, all three dove behind a pile of rubble and buried their faces in the dirt when the side of the building erupted in a flash of yellow that a cloud of dust and smoke into the air and filtered down the street like a ghostly fog before they felt the stones, boards, other assorted debris fell and pelted down on them. "Damn it" Kara yelled at no one in particular..."a damn herder...it was a trap..." and her team felt the ground vibrate again as the Herder rounded a corner and let go another blast into the interior of the building that caused a bright orange fireball to erupt out onto the street. Once again, another shower of debris this time containing various parts of tin cans with apparent bits of putrid chicken parts and decaying dog food filled the air, pelting down on them and only added to the decaying animal that Kara had attached to her ground cover camouflage. From her right....once again...."Ewwwwww.." and again another voice intoned..."....boss...this smells worse than you do..."

Kara didnt answer the two girls and raised her head slowly over the dirt mound muttering to herself.. ”damn…”. Quickly, she raised her rifle, and centered the scope on the Herder, her finger clicking off the safety of the Mark VI grenade launcher mounted in the handle just below the barrel.

The outer edges of the viewing ocular on the scope in front of her eye rotated and small digital displays of information changed as the infrared cut through the billowing dust to highlight the red blob of an outline of the Herder and fed the range, wind and other needed information to the small computer mounted in head of the grenade to allow it to adjust the small rocket motor to the correct velocity and the small fins that would be deployed immediately after firing to direct its path to target accurately.

Her finger squeezed on the trigger, the rocket motor engaged and the small missile shot down the street towards the silver mechanical monster the missile suddenly sputtering and dropping before it landed like a very small red bouncing ball just underneath the herder.

Kara reacted out of instinct as she again buried her head in the dirt just as another ear pounding explosion occurred underneath the alien machine to cause another shower of dirt and debris to rain down her body. “damn..antique equipment” she muttered to herself and she wondered if she would ever be clean again.

Putting her eye to the scope once again, Kara waited again while the computer readjusted to struggling herder and it was then she noticed the jerking of the cross hairs before she felt the ground shake with the feelings of heavy impacts once again. Muttering as she raised her head slightly to look around, she almost let out a verbal exclamation before she bit her dirty lips to keep quiet and still Her right making slight motions to keep still and hoped Kat and Cat were watching her, Kara watched as 2 more Herders suddenly appeared and moved into separate locations around the building and it was then that she realized that what was occurring did not happen by chance.

Suddenly all three Herders let go with flashes of weapon fire and the view of the building disappeared in a sea of dirty fog and then…a metallic voice stuttered out of cloud of billowing smoke .........…”Humans…lay…down…arms or.....you…destroyed…”

All three girls of Kayla's team had their guns trained on the aliens, their scopes constantly adjusting, everything a factor when you were shooting. You didn't get a whole lot of opportunities, so it was best to make sure you capitalized on the ones you did have. Surprise was definitely one of those rarer opportunities. One that you had to work for.

Just before Kayla gave the order to fire, the aliens exploded. Natasha and Sam kept their guns trained on the aliens, watching, but keeping completely silent, as Kayla moved hers. Quickly finding the shots that were being fired. She kept her gun trained on the area, not knowing what kind of people they were. You could never be too careful now a days after all. "The aliens are down" Natasha whispered, and Kayla waited.

Suddenly, the rubble seemed to come alive, before shapes materialized. It seemed to be a three man team, and Kayla kept her gun on them cycling between the three. "Looks like a strike team" She whispered, reaching up and adjusting the scope, zooming in a little bit closer. "3 females, seem non hostile, hold" She continued, before the ground started shaking. "Shit." She whispered again.

"That can't be good" Sam said, ignoring the whispering rule, but Kayla was too worried to care. The ground shook again, as a piece of the building fell away, revealing a herder. The other team dove behind a pile of rubble, hiding them from the rain of debris from the building that used to be there. Kayla watched the whole thing, all three guns trained on the lowest zoom to watch over everything. She saw what appeared to be the leader, launch... something at the alien, though it didn't seem to hit. A few seconds later, the explosion sounded, and the ground blew into chunks of rubble.

The ground rumbled once again, as two more of the behemoths walked into the scope frame. "Shit. They are in trouble" Kayla whispered, as they seemed to surround the area the team was hiding. "It was an ambush" Kayla suddenly realized. There was no way three of them were following that patrol by coincidence. "We have to save them, that could be our asses down there" Kayla said, to no reply from the two other girls. They knew their leader was going to give that order. They trained their guns in the usual pattern. finding the weak points in the armor of the alien metal machines.

"On my mark." Natasha and Sam breathed out slowly, getting ready to take their shots. The wind blew, seeming like an old western stand off, as the aliens surrounded the girls, "3......2....." The last number was said in their heads, all of them knowing the count, before Kayla gave the signal to fire. She shifted the rubble she was sitting under, and all three opened fire in rapid succession. 3 quiet bangs were heard, the sounds softly echoing off the rubble, followed by 3 more. The beasts crumpled, their spines snapped, as the high powered rounds slammed into their necks. The least armored part of the body. "Clear" Kayla whispered, as they flicked the safeties of their guns on.

"Let's get down there." Sam said, climbing out of her rubble hole.

"Wait." Kayla hissed, but it was too late, Sam was already on her way down. "Keep her covered." she told Natasha, before climbing out herself, pulling her gun with her.

Their bodies and faces pressed as far down into the depression behind the rubble as they could possibly get, Kara turned her head and looked at the twins...who stared back at her...."now...this is a fine mess..." Cat said and wrinkled her nose that the smell coming from the dead dog carcass still strapped to Kara's back..."this stinks worse than your stupid dog"... Kat finished the sentence for her sister which was followed up by Cat once again..."..so now that our "plan" has gone to crap...whats the new one?"

Rolling her eyes, Kara heard the alien announcement to surrender once again....shifted her rifle a bit ...then whispered..."..either of you ever see the movie Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid?" and could see the whites of both of the twins as they rolled their eyes in unison, which was the only clean thing on their dirt and filth encrusted faces. Squirming their bodies just a bit like two synchronized swimmers, the two girls readied themselves to move quickly.

Cursing to herself silently, Kara closed her eyes for a few seconds, the twins were a pain sometimes, but she knew they were no others she had met in the last few years of her life that she would rather be in a skirmish with than these two matching bookends but Kara had become hardened over the course of the last few years. She had seen too many friends and family die and had held too many in her arms while they moved into the stillness of death. She knew that eventually the clock was running for all of them and she would rather it be her than one of these two girls to lose the other, but right now, this was life, it was hard, it was final and gave no quarter.

Opening her eyes, Kara's mouth started to form the words "NOW" when suddenly, the popping of heavy fire came from behind and to the side. At first, she thought the aliens had flanked them which meant they were dead where they lay, but then Kara's mind instantly cataloged the sounds...human weapons and she muttered to no none in particular.."what the ..." in unison, she heard the twins at the same time ....".....hell?"

Lifting her head just a bit, Kara watched as the rounds tore through the Herder's organic armored body. She knew they would not go easily, but the shots seemed to be timed well, very precise and Kara knew that whoever was doing the shooting were not noobies AND she hoped they were friendly as well.

Forgetting the alien's...just in case....all three women as one unit squirmed in the depression to train their weapons in the general direction the shooting was coming from. As silence once again settled onto dust and fog covered street, Kara, Cat and Kat watched one figure rise from a hiding place, then another and both, crouching low, tentatively and carefully began to move over the pile of rubble towards their position. Kara noted that each of them made sure to keep out of a direct line of fire, but she knew, from where they were at, if they had wanted to, they could have already taken out her team. Whispering to Cat and Kat...."stay down...and for goodness sakes..whatever you do...dont shoot me in the back.." which elicited a response of two pink tongues appearing from their mouths, once again in a synchronized razzz.

Slowly, standing, Kara kept her weapon pointed in their general direction, but with the barrel lowered towards the ground... being a woman of few words....she waited...patiently, the next move was theirs..and hopefully it would end in a positive way....

"Calm down Dammit" Kayla breathed out. Sam was being much too careless, as she moved down the rubble. Kayla knew that there were safe, if one of them even so much as twitched a gun directly at them, they would fall. But she still felt nervous. She trusted Natasha, but it was never good to feel completely safe when you were faced with an unknown. And she didn't know who they were, if they were friendly, or anything really. Just that she couldn't let any more good people die, or worse, be captured.

"But there are people!" Sam answered back "You're old, you don't know how exciting this is." She said, mostly in jest. Kayla would admit that she was definitely older than Sam was, but not quite old, even if she acted as if she was.

"We don't know if they are friendly" Kayla admonished her, but Sam just ignored it, causing her to sigh. Kayla looked around, taking in the city. The rubble was everywhere, this city was one of the worse ones. It held a major alien base of operations, and as such, every building around the place was destroyed, the people all gone. She looked back down, her gun still in her hand as she watched Sam get down to the bottom of the hill, before walking over to the other group. "Well at least I brought her along." Kayla whispered to herself, as she started back down. "She still knows how to socialize."

Sam got to the bottom of the hill, before smiling brightly as she walked up to the other group, ignoring the gun in the older girls hand "Hi! My name's Sam. Well not really. But you can call me Sam" She said, before stopping in front of the girl that was standing, a few feet away. "I'm one of the people who saved you, You're welcome by the way." She said before giggling. Kayla reached the bottom of the hill by that point. She walked over, standing a bit behind sam, her sniper slung over her shoulder as she stared at the person in front of them, eyeing her up and down, before her eyes moved to the ditch, where she knew the other two people to be. She didn't say anything though, just let Sam talk.

"Where are those other two girls I saw? I know you aren't alone" She says, getting even more excited "I mean no offence, but your old" She whispered, making Kayla sigh. Sam wasn't really the most subtle of the people she knew.

Kayla whispered to herself, as she started back down.

Kara watched the two figures walk towards her and her experience told her from the way they walked, both of them felt secure enough to approach her team and if they felt secure, then there were others of her people watching Kara and the twins and if they were watching, it was a good bet, they had rifles trained on them. Standing casually to appear confident also, her voice low and whispering to the twins..."be cool you two.....they have friends....and so far...they are friendly..."

Down in the depression, Kat and Cat didnt move or say a word, with slow practiced experience, their eyes scanned the rubble for the small signs of hidden bodies, rifle barrels or the flash of sunlight off of the glass of a scope. "The way you and that dead dog smell.." Cat whispered...." I hope they dont shoot you to just put you out of your misery.." Kat finished the sentence for her. Kara refrained from smiling or scowling as she heard the dual muffled giggles from the ditch behind her. Her eyes scanned both of the approaching figures carefully, watching their mannerisms and their walk.....females...both of them....with the dirt and muck covering them, it appeared to Kara that one was the older of the two and appeared to be more hesitant in approaching than the younger one and held back from approaching Kara while the younger, who more or less mirrored the twins moved quickly without hesitation...youth was always impetuous... age brought a hesitant wisdom born of experience.

Kara followed their progress as they made their way over the dirt, broken concrete, twisted remains of street lamps and other assorted boulders of debris and made sure that she didnt make any sudden movements, waiting patiently until they stopped, "Hi! My name's Sam. Well not really. But you can call me Sam" ...and without stopping...."I'm one of the people who saved you, You're welcome by the way." then giggled which briefly caught Kara off guard at her abruptness and caused her to stand and stare at the young woman without speaking. "Where are those other two girls I saw? I know you aren't alone" the young woman blurted out "I mean no offense, but your old"

Kara nodded a single move of her head towards the young girl, then turned her gaze onto the older woman... "You the leader??.....you want to tell the rest of their team to lower their weapons and join you....makes the twins uncomfortable being targeted by unseen people" then Kara hesitated, letting silence settle in for a bit to see what the next move would be...

Just then, the wind, blowing down through the hulk of the buildings shifted causing the wafting smell of the dead dog strapped to her back to blow towards the two women. From behind Kara...she heard an audible sigh..."thank goodness..." then another voice..."...I thought we were gonna die of inhuman gas attack" and to Kara's displeasure, two tall, lithe figures, covered in dirt and bits of everything from the explosion scrambled up from the ditch and took a place on either side of Kara. Their gaze briefly on the older woman, taking her in, then dismissing her and turned to look at the younger one..."Your right...she is old..." Cat blurted out while Kat intoned."...yeah ancient...hi, I'm Kat" before the other twin blurted out..."...and I am Cat...." then both of them in unison finished the sentence..."where twins..and thank you for saving our butts.."

Kayla didn't say anything, she knew that they had the advantage right now, and she was not going to lose that at this point. She waited a couple of seconds, her head turning to look at Sam, and then scanning the surrounding buildings. The rubble seems to be scattered everywhere, and she only hoped that there wouldn't be too many more visitors. Kayla's eyes finally wandered back towards the leader taking in her appearance.

"Yes. I'm the leader, and I'm sorry, but my team is staying right where they are." Kayla answered back calmly. Sam gave a small huff, not taking being ignored very well. She was about to force her way into the conversation, before the wind shifted. She took a couple of sniffs of the air, before gagging slightly "Oh my god! What is that smell!" Sam screamed out, plugging her nose with her fingers.

Then, Kayla and Sam heard two more voices, coming from where they knew the other two to be hiding. Slowly two slim figures rose out of the ditch, and walked forward to stand on either side of the leader. Kayla looked over the two new additions, raising her hand slightly and giving a signal to Natasha, before lowering it again. She didn't mind being dismissed by the younger two, and stepped to the side, motioning the other leader over, giving the younger girls time to talk. She figured Sam needed this, there weren't many girls of that age around camp.

"Oh wow! You are twins! That is so cool! Do you guys have a special bond or something? I've read about those." She blurted out with out stopping, excitement bleeding into every word "You don't know how lonely it is being 17! There is like, no one to talk to anywhere." She says with a sad sigh, before brightening up again "So what are you guys doing out here? How long have you been here? You smell dreadful you know." She said, before bursting out into giggle again.

Kayla was off to the side, her eyes on Sam, before pulling them back to the leader, knowing that they were covered. She once again scanned the rubble and destruction, waiting for the leader to join her.

Cat and Kat also crinkling their nose at the wind change stepped a bit away from their leader...."KARA...." Cat started and "PLEASE" Kat finished the sentence...which caused Kara to raise an eyebrow in recognition.."Oh ....yeah....." she nodded to the other woman, who she noted didnt seem as perplexed with her camouflage and the stench that was wafting off her body. Reaching up, she unclasped the camo netting and tossed it down into a nearby depression..."..tends to keep nosy aliens and unfriendly people away....you'd be surprised at how they avoid looking too closely once they get a smell...", then followed Kayla to the side a bit.

"Oh wow! You are twins! That is so cool! Do you guys have a special bond or something? I've read about those." caused both Kat and Cat to shake their heads "no" in unison to Sam's questin..."No...no connection..."...Cat began...."we are just two....." Kat added..."ordinary girls...." Cat finished and they both smiled sheepishly at Sam...and agreed with her on being young and the lack of friends...then began asking alternating questions in their usual manner.

"I wouldn't expose my team either.." Kara muttered, then as if putting the snipers out of her mind, figuring if they were going to take them out, they probably would have already done so. Kara chuckled to herself as she reached down, unbuttoned a pocket of her filthy dirty army surplus clothing and wrinkled her nose as she pulled out a squishy, melted candy bar, tearing it in half and offering a piece to Kayla... "I am a bit ripe..." then locked eyes with the woman..."look...we have been battling these patrols since we left St. Louis 3 months ago....they havent given us a minute's rest..its like they are trying to gradually wear us down..I have lost at least a dozen people in the last 3 weeks...not sure what they are up to...but this wasnt an accident...this was a plain old ambush...they knew we were here and they want us alive... " she broke eye contact with Kayla and her began making sweeps down the street. "I dont know how many of you....."

Suddenly, a shrill whine filled the air which caused Kara to snap her head upwards towards the western sky and the twins to break off their chatter in mid-sentence....before a look of fear appeared on the twin's faces at the same time and Kat yelled..."damn...not...ag" and Cat to reach out and grab Sam's hand..."ain..BAT!'s....flyers..." and Kat.."..we gotta go...15 sec before hell arrives"...and both started towards a nearby alleyway pulling on Sam's hand....

Kara grabbed her rifle, turning at the same time, her body already beginning to move towards another, closer alleyway...almost yelling at Kayla..."...alien flyers....we call them bats...got about 15 seconds before this place is toast..." her body already running towards the alley way, the words spilling behind her.

In the distance, a small black speck appeared, the shrill whine wafting over the small town as both it and the sound began to get louder...

Sam stood still, alternating between looking at Kat and Cat, as each one spoke. "That would be cool" She said wistfully "I bet you two are still close though, I was I had someone I could be that close to." She said with a slightly sad tone in her voice, before she snapped back "But your talking thing is awesome. How much practice does it take to be able to talk like that? It's so wicked!" She nearly shouted, before quieting down again "Sorry. I'm still kind of excited and running on adrenaline" She said with another giggle. She started listening to the twins questions and answering each of them.

Kayla gave a small smile at the gesture, and took the half of the candy bar, listening to the leader talking. "I'm Kayla by the way" She said, giving her name first as a sign of friendship and trust. "I know what it's like. I've been battling over this city for a long time, and sometimes there are things that you need to do." She said, referring to her comment of being ripe. "The aliens aren't stupid. If we've learned one thing it's that. They know we are here, and they know we are a thorn in their side. Thankfully we are well hidden, and they can't find us. But this was advanced even by their standards." She said, looking around the herders and the patrol. Kayla was about to tell her more about what she knew, before she heard the whine.

Sam, blinked as her hand was grabbed and she was pulled away, her rifle was way back up in her hiding place, and she was sorry she didn't think to bring it. She followed after the twins, getting to the alley before hiding inside of it. "I've never heard that before" She whispered, the sound alien to her ears.

Kayla, unfortunately had. She hefted her rifle off of her shoulder, pointing it at the black dot "Bait, a trap, and clean up. This is ridiculous." She muttered, before pulling it down, and giving Natasha a complicated signal, before running towards the same alley, her rifle in front of her as she hides in the same place as the other leader "They really went all out for this. We must be hurting them more than we thought" She whispered, peeking out to watch the flier get closer.

Natasha was watching the whole meeting from her depression in the hill. Her rifle drifted back and forth between Kayla and Sam, or the people they were talking to. Things seemed to be going well, and they seemed to be friendly. She saw them split up, and Kayla told her that they were safe, so she flicked the safety on her gun, just watching for now. "Sam seems to be enjoying herself" She mutters with a smile, "Poor girl barely has anyone to talk to" She whispers, before drifting back over Kayla. She caught wind of the whine before either of the other two did, and growled lightly "A flier too." Kayla gave her the sign, and she shifted, her rifle at full zoom aiming for the alien craft.. It seemed to be heading right for the clearing that the herders dead bodies were laying. She saw the alleys that her team had went in to. and figured that they would be safe for now. Natasha kept her gun trained on the ship, holding her fire as it rained down fire into the clearing. It pulled up, and the clearing was left a wasteland. smoke and rubble strewn over the ground, the herders bodies wiped out, along with the patrol and their supplies.

Ducking down the ally, the twins ran in unison, turning this way and that as the narrow street made quick bends and sharp turns. Occasionally one would look back to see if Sam was following them. Behind them, the screaming sound of the "flyers" first pass, the raking sound of the strange weapons blasting down the street they had just left behind them, the rasping of something filling the air above the screaming of its engines.

Completing its run, the craft pulled straight up in a vertical climb, the sun suddenly glinting off of two silver canisters that turned loose from somewhere underneath its hidden belly and began to tumble back towards the ground as it rolled over, its under carriage pointed upwards and it began to disappear back into the distance. Slowly, as if in slow motion, the two cylinders tumbled end over end downwards towards the ambush point.

Kara, not looking back to see Kayla give a signal to the rest of her team, ducked into another side street, her boots crunching on the rocks and debris as ran. Behind her, she could hear Kayla running behind her. Listening to the sound of the engines, she ran until she heard the distinct strain of the "flyer" power up its engines as it began its climb and spotting a black hole of what had once been a window on the building in front of her. She reached backwards, grabbed the sleeve of Kayla's uniform and jerked as she dove into the opening, rolling down into the basement of the old apartment building and squirming away from the opening before she looked back just in time to hear Kayla..... "They really went all out for this. We must be hurting them more than we thought" She whispered, peeking out to watch the flier get closer. Screaming, Kara leaped across the short distance, "GET DOWN" and landed on top of the woman to push her down to the ground.

Kat muttered one word..."SHIT....not..." as she also heard the flyer make its climb and Cat finished it..."...again..." suddenly, both in one synchronized move grabbed Sam, one on her left arm and one on her right, jerking her into a shallow depression underneath an old city bus, both of them crawling on top of her to push her face down into the dirt.

Suddenly, the street erupted into a singular, noiseless, white flash that illuminated the whole area, a brilliant, white light turned the day into an explosion brighter than the sun as the street, buildings, rubble and everything in the blast area suddenly vaporized, the dirt and debris of what had once been concrete, steel, rocks and dirt sucked straight up into the air as the mushroom shaped cloud formed and the blast wave tore down the alley's, twisting and turning with each turn of the street. Building facings ripped off and joined the debris and concussion wave, followed by heat and the an ear splitting rumble and roar of destruction followed the speed of light wave outwards from the detonation point.

The world around Kara and Kayla suddenly erupted into hell as the building above them bent, then shattered into oblivion, reigning rocks, steel and concrete down around them. The old city bus suddenly lifted high into the air, then without a sound, it disappeared down the street as the blast wave swept over the three women the buildings on each side, trembled, then crumbled down into the street as the depression where they lay suddenly disappeared, filled with what had been buildings.

Silence finally settled in on the area as the mushroom cloud dispersed and the tons of ashes, soot and dirt began to filter back down onto an area swept bare as if someone took a broom and wiped the earth clean and only the sound of the wind filtered around the huge circular blast area...

Natasha had her scope still aimed at the alien flier, when she suddenly saw something falling from it. She watched it tumbling end over end and her eyes widened "This can not be good." She whispered, before pulling her gun into the depression she was hiding in, curling down into it.

And then, the world erupted. The sky became nothing but a white light, followed quickly by a giant shock wave. If one had been brave enough to look, they could have seen it rolling across the ground, followed by the mushroom cloud that blasted off into the air.

Natasha could hear the building collapsing, one after another as the shock wave rolled through them, before she felt the ground start shaking around her. She ducked down tighter, before the rocks around her were pushed back, tumbling end over end by the blast from the shock wave. She stayed mostly protected, but could only fear for her friends safety, not knowing how far away they were able to get. She felt the winds die down, before she started feeling small drops of something landing on her. She turned around, and saw the sky raining ash, little tiny pieces fluttering in the breeze, slowly covering the ground. The next thing she noticed was silence, absolute and total silence, and it was scaring her.

Kayla screamed as she was tackled to the floor, before her world turned into nothing but light and shaking, for what seemed like an eternity, that was all she knew. Buildings crumbling, earth shaking, and a brilliant white light, that slowly turned into a mushroom cloud. She slowly sat up, and blinked looking around. Everything was either gone or destroyed "What the hell." She whispered. before she felt the ashes, looking up to black snow. She shook her head "It's" She whispered again. "It destroyed everything."

Sam had no idea was was going on, as she was tackled to the ground by the twins. She blushed and was enjoying herself, cuddling up agaisnt them both, before her world suddenly started shaking. She gasped and screamed in fear, before she suddenly felt the bus get blown over top of where she was hiding. She pressed up agianst the twins harder, still screaming even once the shaking died down. Holding onto the twins as tightly as she could.

Kara groaned as she rolled part of her body off of Kayla and onto her back. Staring up chunks of concrete that once had been the ceiling and now rested just feet above their head..."...just shoot me now" her voice hoarse as she lay there a few minutes trying to gather her thoughts and to make sure all of her body parts were still intact. Suddenly, she rolled on her side and the sound and smell of silent retching filled the small place. Finally, she pulled herself to a sitting position, the only clean spot on her body around her mouth and eyes, she looked at Kayla. "You...ok...??" then pushing herself to her knees, she scrambled up the small incline towards the now smaller opening they dived through earlier.

"I....hate...those....things...something....new...the "fish heads"... are getting serious now..." A sigh escaping her lips as she lay back onto the rubble, sliding a bit back down from the opening..one of her shaking hands reached up to tug on the velcro tabs that held her camo top closed. "Damn.." she uttered as the top came open to reveal top rise of her full breasts that rose and fall, pressing against a dirty white tank she wore under her top. Sliding her hand into the opening, a small grimace crossed her face as a red wetness covered her fingers when she slid it out and held it up and looked at it.."...shrapnel ...I think..." Then lay back against a block of concrete. and closed her eyes..."you ok?..." she asked..."..we need to get out of here...we have a camp on the edge of town....your welcome...to join us....".. her voice trailing off as her eyes rolled into her head and her body slid down beside Kayla, a black wetness on her top spreading slowly from a small jagged hole in the material just below the top of the full rise on the right side of her top..

"Cough....Cough.." Kat's body, laying prone on side of Sam and her sister on the other. Gently taking Sam's arms, she unwrapped them from around her waist and slowly sat up. Swaying slightly, a small trickle of black wetness trickling down the bridge of her nose from her forehead. She shook Sam..."hey...you...." her words stopping and a strange looking crossing her face when no reply came to finish the sentence she had started.. Turning she shifted to her hands and knees and scrambled over Sam to Cat's body which still lay prone, face down in the dirt..."CAT!!...
CAT....." the worry in her voice rising as she shook her sister, then slowly rolled her over on her side, then her back. "Oh...SHIT...", worry, almost anguish, filled her voice as she saw the spreading circle of black wetness appearing from around a steel bar that disappeared inside cameo blouse just above her left hip..."oh...crap...crap...crap" Kat murmured again and again as she patted Cat's cheek..."come on sweetie...wake up....wake up" and then a relieved giggle escaped her lips as the girls eyes batted and opened...her words sounding like they came from a mouth of cotton..."damn..what a ride..." then as if her body was waking up, she moaned, her hands trying to grab for the pain in her lower side..."...dont touch baby girl..." Kat said quickly as she grabbed the girls hands..."your..gonna be ok...we gotta get you back to Doc..." Turning to Sam..."you...ok...can you...help..me get her out of here..." her head swiveling to look around at the landscape...then nodding her head down the debris filled street..."that way...come on ...quick..she's bleeding badly"

Kayla looked worriedly at the girl that was hiding with her. She heard her talking, but she looked in bad shape, and Kayla knew it was her fault. Kara had tackled her to the ground and had shielded her from the majority of the blast. She saw the blood, and knew that Kara was worse off than the even had though. When she fainted, and started sliding down, Kayla jumped into action. She slowly laid Kara on the ground, not sure if it was safe to pick her up at this point, and started looking around "Shit. Shit" She mumbled, seeing nothing that could be of use, just rubble. Lots and lots of rubble. "I'll have to risk it." She reached down and picked up Kara, holding her as gently as she could, before rushing out of the building. She made it out where she thought she coudl be seen, and signaled for Natasha to come down.

Sam shivered and slowly sat up, she looked around, and saw nothing but chunks of concrete and rock as far as she could see. She heard one of the twins talking before it turned to screaming. She slowly turned, her ears ringing, vision blurry as she tried to focus on the girls right next to her. She eventually was able to force her sense to work, just in time to hear instructions. She nodded weakly, wobbling as she tried to get into a standing position, before walking over and leaning down "How are we going to carry her?" She asked, finding hearing her own voice strange.

Natasha waited with baited breath, looking for any kind of movement to see if her friend was alright, and let out a sigh of relief when she saw her walk out. She saw the signal, and quickly threw her gun over her back, and slid out of the hole she was staying in. she carefully but quickly made her way down the hill, making sure to test any of the rocks before she stepped on them. She finally made it down to the bottom, and ran over to Kayla "I was so worried" She whispered, and Kayla let out a small smile "Kara saved me" She whispered, "Help me, we are going ot bring her back to her camp." And so she got on the other side of Kara, lifting her slightly, and made their way to where they thought Kara had directed them. "I hope Sam made it through okay" Kayla whispered to Natasha "She went with those twins, I think they got away in time" Natasha whispered back, neither of them wanting to talk very loud, even if they knew that there was no one around. It just seemed wrong to break the silence that had settled over the area in the wake of the blast.

Kat suddenly stood and grabbed Sam by the shoulders...her voice tight and she spoke with a controlled panic..."Snap out of it...look...there...grab that.." she indicated a piece of twin that lay hanging off a large piece of concrete..."come on..stay with me...we have to get her back to the Doc...she is losing blood..." her head turning to check the large black stain that was spreading over her military clothing around the steel rod.

Kara moaned as she felt herself being carried by the two women, a small stream of red dribbled in drops to the debris as they moved in the general direction that Kara had indicated.

From a tall building, just outside of the debris field, careful to stay in the dark, cool shadows of the old bell tower. Its multiple eyes took in the scene of destruction and the slight movement of the two groups of figures moving out of the cleared path and back into the existing alley ways of the part of the town that still stood. On appendage moved and gestured into the air as a series of chirps and buzzes quietly sounded in the air and as the women disappeared from view. The multiple skittering sounds disappeared back down into the depths of the old church.

Chandra watched, always on alert, swept her weapon across the killing field for what seemed 1000th time, each time she muttered a quiet "shit", then moved back across the zone. Just once, the tall black Amazon wished that something would just cross into her line of fire. Her finger stroked the trigger of the machine gun lovingly. Hidden under a hole just big enough to fold her 6ft 3 in frame into it like a cocoon, a trickle of sweat ran down the scar that started just above her left eye brow, down the side of her face and then down her face to underneath her jaw. Her shaven itched and she wanted to scratch it badly, but do that, it would mean she might miss something and to Chandra, that would be considered a fate worse than death.

Suddenly, Chandra tensed at the movement...no...two sets of movements, one coming from the left alley way and one from the blown street to the right. She had had heard the firing and the blast shock wave had almost drove her out of her hole, but it had subsided quickly and that was just fine with her cause the blast meant that the alien bastards where close and one of them, just one, might come into her field of fire.

Chandra swung the gun first to the left and then to the right, "come on...come on you SOB's.. " she breathed her words "come to mama...mama wants some alien hamburger..." her finger tightening on the trigger.

Kat, her belt poked through the two holes of the twin sheet and wrapped around her body, pulled on the sheet metal, her clothing soaked and her muscles strained as she pulled on the tin containing her sister's body. "Come on...come on..." she spat at Sam who carried the opposite end of the tin in piece of wire that was wrapped around her neck and waist..."get your ass in gear..."

Appearing from the street and alley at the same time, Kat and Sam, and Natasha, Kayla carrying Kara gave Chandra two possible targets and the black woman hesitated, trying to make a decision as to which bunch of Alien SOB's was gonna die first. Suddenly, a spattering of rocks sounded from above her position and rolled down in front of her with a splattering sound, the rocks and dirt it kicked up blurred her vision just a bit and cursing, she pulled the trigger and felt the satisfying jerking of the gun as the bullets walked across in front of Kayla and Natasha, kicking up dirt and rocks as the bullets dug a trench just in front of them.

Up the street in front of the women, a voice yelled at the top of its lungs..."CHANDRA.....YOU TRIGGER HAPPY BASTARD...STOP FIRING..THOSE ARE OUR PEOPLE...." as a figure with long flaming red hair slid down the embankment, kicking the barrel of the weapon into the dirt.....
