It had been nearly 3 years since Jay had set foot on American soil and she was overjoyed to finally be boarding the plane that would take her home. She had just spent three months in a hospital after being shot multiple times during combat. Although her physical injuries were healed her mental health was not well at all. Her captain had tried to help by having her speak to a psychologist but the damage was too severe and he was forced to discharge her honorably. In her time with the United States army Jay had seen her fair share of deaths and had been injured quite a few times but the most recent death she had to witness was most tragic for her.
"GRENADE!" ,The warning came shouting over the gunfire and the troops scattered and took cover. The explosion came seconds after echoing off the walls of the run down building they took cover in. Jay crawled on her stomach keeping covered by a wall. When she reached her friend Micheal he was panting and cringing in pain. At first she thought he had just been shot and she yelled for a medic.
"Jay I can't feel my legs" ,Micheal whispered in a choked up tone. Blood rushed out of his throat and his eyes filled with tears.
"It's alright we're gonna get you out of here, we're gonna get you home" ,Jay told him as she stared into his eyes.
Jay and Micheal had grown up together, went to school together, and joined the military together. He had two children and a wife at home waiting for him. Jay knew his family well and over the years grew to love them just as much as she loved her own family.
Jay's eyes shifted to the medic when he mentioned that there was no way Micheal was going to make it. "What are you talking about?" ,she asked through gritted teeth. The medic was at a loss for words and simply motioned to Micheal's lower half with his eyes, his body had been completely blown in half and all that remained was his torso. Micheal died right in front of Jay's eyes and she lost it.
All that was heard was a loud scream come from Jay's mouth as she stood and fired her weapon at the enemy. She killed about six men before being shot down herself. Soldiers rushed to her aid and cleared the area before getting her out of there and to the nearest hospital.
When Jay finally arrived on the front steps of her parents house she stood there simply staring at the door. Her uniform was perfectly pressed and cleaned and her shoes were shined, her bags were dropped to the ground at her sides and she sighed heavily. This was it, she was home and never had to go back to war but the damage done would live with her forever. Slowly she went to reach down for her bags and the front door to the house flew open and her mother and father came rushing towards her.
"Jaylene it's been so long" ,her mother cried as she wrapped her arms around her.
Her father being a military man himself and hearing what had happened simply patted her on the back and gave her a sympathetic look before grabbing her bags. "Come on let's get you a drink" ,he stated before making his way into the house.
As Jay walked into the large family home her mother led her into the kitchen and had her sit down while she rummaged through the fridge and the cabinets looking for something to make Jay to eat. "Your sister should be around soon, I'm sure she'll be happy to see you" ,her mother stated with a smile.
"Y-yeah, how is she?" ,Jay asked quietly as her father set a glass of whiskey down in front of her.
"Oh yes she's doing great" ,her mother replied.
The conversation didn't go any further as Jay began to sip on her drink. There was so much on her mind, so many things haunting her and she was just happy to know she was safe now, that she was home. She didn't have to say anything and she didn't need for anyone else to say anything the simple comfort of being home was enough to ease her pain for the moment.
