Theme Background

Is there a way to change the sites background to something brighter and the text to something darker?

Yes. In your User CP, go to the Edit Options on the left side bar. In the window titled 'Other Options' you can change the theme. There are two options. Dark World is the default, the darker one. The other one is a white background.
