Kara had been warned all her life to stay away from the Forbidden Forest. Coincidentally, she had never had it explained to her exactly why she needed to stay away from it, just that she did. She had asked around in her village, and it turned out that no one else had any idea why they needed to stay away, either. It had just... Been that way for as long as anyone could remember.
Maybe she was just more curious than anyone else in her little village, but the more she had thought about it, the more that Kara had wanted to know why the Forbidden Forest was so forbidden. And, since she couldn't get her answers from anyone else, she had decided that she was going to go and find out. She didn't expect that she was going to find anything, really. If it had been ages and ages since anyone had even gone there, like the tales suggested, then whatever threat had been present was probably gone-- if there had ever even been a threat in the first place. Or if there was a threat, it was surely some sort of malicious conspiracy on the part of the town elders, which it would be her duty to expose if she learned of it.
And so, one night when the moon was full, she had quietly snuck from her house, via the window in her bedroom. She crept through the empty streets of her little village, making her way toward the Forbidden Forest. Her stealth was entirely necessary; at any given time, there were no fewer than four volunteer guards patrolling around the edge of the trees nearest town to keep people from heading inside-- another unnecessary measure, she was certain, because she was very much convinced that there was nothing all that dangerous there the more that she thought about it.
She hid in the shadow of a house as she waited for the next patrol of the guards went by, and then, when she was sure the coast was clear, she made a run for it. She ran until the town was out of sight (which barely took any time at all because the trees were so dense), and then she stopped to catch her breath, looking around.
And perhaps it was just because it was so dark in the forest (the leaves of the trees above kept most of the moonlight from reaching the forest floor), but it was... Really kind of eerie. Not forbidden-eerie, or anything, but maybe a little less welcoming than a typical forest at night could be. She decided she'd only stay for a little while to have a look around, and then she'd turn back...
But then, once that 'little while' had passed, she realized something quite scary indeed: she had no idea how to get back to town.
