Mark Willis stepped out of his car and slowly walked to the large building. It was quiet, but a few others could be seen around. The students of the middle school wouldn't be arriving in large numbers for another hour. He was there early since, as a teacher, he needed to get ready for his classes that day. There was another reason though. He wanted to be there early because it was the first day of another teacher. He went right to the teacher's lounge and sat down, relaxing and waiting for the new teacher to arrive.
Phil Desmond parked his own car next to Mark's and gathered his things. He was clearly excited as he made his way into the school. He was ready to start teaching his classes. He was one of the science teachers and he was taking over part way through the year after one of the other teachers left to take care of her sick mother. Phil had made sure that he was up to date on what the students had been learning and he knew he was as prepared as he could be. He went into the school and soon found the office. He picked up a few important documents, then went to the teacher's lounge.
When Phil entered the room Mark stood. The two men smiled and hugged tightly. It had been far too long since they had seen each other, though it had only been a few months. For two men who had been best friends since childhood two months felt like an eternity. They were practically brothers and cared about each other more that some brothers. Mark had told Phil about the job opening and had vouched for him. Mark had been teaching at the school for two years already and was partly into his third year. At 26 he was still a very young teacher. Phil was even younger, starting his first full time position at only 24, the same as Mark had been when he'd first got the job. Both had worked on the substitute lists for two years before getting their jobs.
They sat and talked for a while. Mark introduced Phil to everyone that entered the lounge. Eventually it came time for them to get to their classrooms before students started to arrive. Phil got directions to his classroom and made his way there as Mark went another direction to his social studies classroom. They made plans to have lunch together and to hang out after the school day was over. Now that they were in the same place again they would definitely be spending more time together. Even though they had been apart for a while they were still best friends. They would talk about everything.
The day started and both men started their first classes. The kids took their places. For Mark it was business as usual. The students were used to him and knew him. They had an established routine. He started to teach where he had left off at the end of the class before. As he taught he occasionally ran a hand through his short brown hair. His blue eyes scanned the classroom to make sure everyone was paying attention. He had an imposing figure that really made sure of it though. He was 6'3" with broad shoulders and a strong frame. His attitude didn't match his build though. He was a very nice, friendly guy.
Phil was a little different. He had to introduce himself to the students and would need time to learn their names. He also needed to pick up where they had been, but it wasn't going to flow easily. He needed to prove himself to them. He didn't have the advantage of Mark's size, but he did have one advantage of his own. His light hair and brown eyes matched with an athletic 6'0" build and natural attractive features had a number of the girls in the classroom paying close attention to him. They were far to young for anything to ever happen, but as long as they were focused he was happy. His attitude and teaching style made sure the rest of the students were paying attention as well.
When the morning came to an end the two of them left their classrooms and went to the teacher's lounge where they met to eat lunch. They took up two of the seats at a small table with four seats total. Mark started asking Phil about his first classes and Phil answered. Mark had completely forgotten about his usual lunch plans in the excitement of having his friend arriving for his first day.
