It had taken forever. Well, to be more accurate, it had taken a week. Three to get all the way out here, one to get over a raging river, a few more to fight his way through the stubborn underbrush with a machete, a couple of minutes to fall down a quite steep hill, the rest of the day to stop his head from spinning... but in the deep jungle where the sun trickled down to the ground only rarely through the thick canopy, it certainly felt like forever.
Kenton came to rest at the mouth of a cave, draining the very last of his canteen as he gazed down into it. Here he was. He'd had to scour the books just to find evidence that this, the cave he'd heard of in legends, was real. It hadn't been easy, he reflected as he started down into it. It had a reputation for a great treasure, the product of a bygone age... but every time people went looking for it, they either never found the cave, or just... didn't return. He didn't think there was anything to worry about, though. He was a man of science, and he wasn't about to back down from a challenge!
He withdrew his flash light, shining a bright beam down into the darkness of the cave. He jogged down into it, excited to get down there and see about setting up some sort of camp. The tunnel winded on for a good long while, heading left then right then down, a bit up, and then down and down and down.... Eventually, he came out in a large cavern that glowed with a slight blue luminescence that seemed to come from the very walls.
The cavern was otherwise massive, with a great set of ruins sitting in the very middle. As he approached on roads that seemed untouched for hundreds of years, he noted the great pool of crystal clear water that sat off to one side. Huzzah! He jogged his way towards it, feet squelching in some manner of slimy substance as he did so, hitting his knees by the side and undoing his canteen. He scooped water greedily, unaware of what he'd just stepped in, taking deep, hearty swigs of the pure water as soon as he had enough. It had been blisteringly hot out there!
