Tessa Martins was, to put it bluntly, a complete nerd. She had no friends, no real friends anyway, and no social life whatsoever. At school she just kept to herself, usually studying in the library or hidden away on either her cell phone or laptop, then when school was over she just went straight home, bypassing everything and going straight for her computer, flopping down into her big comfy chair and booting up her favourite online game, one of the most popular in the world. It was strange, the game had come almost out of nowhere, just appearing in stores one day with no advance warning or hype, and yet it had been a hit. Somehow, even on the lowliest of computers it was able to create almost lifelike graphics, with characters that seemed almost alive and gameplay that was more realistic than anything anyone had ever really seen. As soon as word started to spread the uptake of the game was phenomenal, millions all over the world signing up and starting to play online, groups and clans quickly forming. Tessa however had no time for that though, she simply wanted to play the game by herself, without having to put up with people whining about losing on loot rolls or complaining about how someone in the group wasn't doing their job right. What was the point in all that when you were supposed to be just having fun? It was for that reason, that in the laughter of anyone online it was mentioned to, that Tessa had stuck with playing solo, even for quests and dungeons which seemingly needed large groups of 20 or 30 players to succeed, Tessa struggled on alone. Honing her skills and talents, perfecting her strategy little by little, always taking mental notes on weaknesses of the enemies that she could use in the next attempt.
Finally, such perseverance had paid off. It was late on a Friday night, or more accurately a Saturday morning, something like 2 or 3 am, and as usual Tessa's room was illuminated only by the glow of the computer screen, headphones on to keep the noise from waking her parents, cell phone charging on the desk beside her, and once more Tessa was making her solo attempt at the games ultimate dungeon, a dungeon that only a group of 50 players working together had managed to defeat before, and even then only rarely. And yet here was Tessa, running in there completely alone, taking her time, waiting for opportunities and through superior skill and tactics making her way through enemy after enemy, all falling before her. And then, finally came the boss....the ultimate boss of the game to whom so many had fallen before.
It took almost an hour of constant battle, but finally, Tessa, or more precisely her character, given the same name as her of course, struck the final blow, striking down the final boss of the game completely by herself against all odds. The girl couldn't help a small fistpump into the air. "Damn I'm good....and they all said it couldn't be done. Good thing I've been recording this....I can't wait to get this video online..."
Just as Tessa was preparing to leave the dungeon, close down the game and get her video online in order to gloat, her computer suddenly seemed to crash. "Eh?! N-no way! Oh come on!" She growled, quickly going to check her computer, but it was completely dead. "Oh great....of all the times....I don't believe this" She growled angrily and sat up, letting out a frustrated sigh. A few moments later however, her monitor suddenly started glowing, faintly at first, before suddenly getting brighter. "E-eh? What the...what's going on?" Before Tessa could examine more, a sudden burst of light came from her monitor, then suddenly a strong wind began blowing through the room, sucking in towards the monitor. "H-huh? What the hell is going on?" Tessa tried to scramble away, but the wind just kept getting stronger. With a cut-off scream Tessa was sucked into the monitor, along with her cell phone and the headphones she was still wearing, her backpack being picked up from the floor and sucked in along with her, before the light and wind suddenly cut off.
"Nnngh...." Tessa groaned as she started to wake up again, slowly sitting and reaching up to rub her head. "The hell.....?" She adjusted her glasses and glanced around, then blinked, finding herself clearly not in her room, but seemingly in a forest of some kind. "Uhh...ok....did I fall asleep at my computer or something?" She reached up to pinch herself and winced. "Ok...not asleep and not dreaming....so just where am I? And more importantly how do I get back...?" A quick glance around and Tessa found her backpack, cell phone and headphones, putting the latter two into the former, though not before checking the cell phone, no signal of course. "Doesn't look like I'm gonna be able to just look up where I am on Google Maps then....ok...." She stood and brushed herself down, still in her school uniform, before turning and picking a random direction, beginning to walk in it. "Guess all I can do is try and find somewhere to ask where I am...."
