Miri Had been working at this little retro game store for about a year now. She was used to the kind of stares and awkwardness she got from the customers, but nothing had prepared her for today. Before now, she had been asked out, called pretty, and been asked to marry by about half of the regular customers and she always played it off like they were joking, even if they weren’t. They usually went along with it in order to forgo the embarrassment of being turned down. The only exception was one drunk guy who, one evening, started cussing her out for not giving him her number.
Today, Miri wore an old Super Mario shirt that was obviously a guy’s shirt that she had ripped up and sewn back together to make it fit better. She like it better like this anyways. She also wore a pair of dark blue jeans that hugged her nice rear just right, even if the shirt did cover most of it. Now Miri was a very pretty girl. At least that was what she was told by most of her customers; though she didn’t always believe them. She knew she wasn’t bad looking, but she never really thought of herself as pretty. Up through high school she had always been one of the weird kids that usually ended up being loners. She wasn’t like that now though; she had plenty of friends who she hung out with on a regular basis. In fact she was talking to one of them right now.
Her Best friend Trixy was currently standing across the counter from Miri, talking up a storm. Miri just nodded and listened, hardly getting a word in edgewise. Trixy was going on about her boyfriend and asking Miri why she hadn’t gotten one in such a long time. To which Miri just replied with a shrug and Trixy went off on something else. Before too long, her friend got a text and left, off to see said boyfriend while Miri started pricing some games someone had traded in. She sighed, looking around the empty store. There were some tables set up in the middle of the store so people could open and play the Magic the Gathering cards the store sold and some old school arcade games set up in the corner. Most people couldn’t stand it, but Miri had come to enjoy the loud “MARVEL VERSUS CAPCOMMMM!!!” that rang out every five minutes from one of the machines.
She put everything away when a few customers came in and started browsing. “Hello, Welcome to Games 4 U! If you need any help with anything, just yell.” She said with a smile. A few of them just walked right to the 360 games and started looking while the last guy just awkwardly started looking at the NES games. He kept glancing over at Miri, then at the other people, obviously waiting for them to leave. Once they did, he made his way over to the counter, looking at the games in the case while trying to make conversation. Miri was never a big talker, so the less she talked, the more the other guy talked. Eventually he was telling her all sorts of personal information about his previous relationships and such. Eventually it happened. He looked her dead in the eyes and asked her to dinner. Miri did what she always did and laughed a bit, pointing to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich she brought from home. “I brought my own. Thanks though.” She said politely. But the guy insisted she go out with him.”Well what about a movie? The new Star Trek movie just came out, we could go see that.” He said, reaching for her hand. Miri was so flustered she didn’t notice until he had her hand in his clammy grasp and he didn’t seem to want to let go. “I’ve already seen it. It was no good.” She said, frowning a bit as she tried to take her hand back, but he wouldn’t let go, he just pulled her a little closer and tightened his grip. “Come on, Babe, you gotta go out with me.” He said, leaning in a bit and grabbing her other arm. “No, I don’t.” Miri insisted. “Now please let go, you’re hurting me.” She said wincing a bit. “You don’t know what pain is yet.” He said, suddenly grabbing her tussled blonde locks. It didn’t look like she was going anywhere. “Please! Stop!” Miri’s voice sounded desperate. And she was. She was praying someone would walk through that door and save her before this got anymore out of hand. Speaking of hands, her delicate one was being pushed to her assailant’s crotch as his breathing picked up. “Scream or hurt me and you’ll wish you were dead.” He said in a hushed tone. She just shut her eyes tightly, hoping she would wake up from this nightmare.
