Steven stared out the window at the radiant set in the clear, blue sky, letting out a dejected sigh as he turned his back to the beautiful scene outside. It was summertime, the weather was perfect, and here he was stuck doing volunteer work at a hospital, and a mental hospital as that. While as his friends were out having fun on the beach or going on trips to exotic locations, he was stuck in a building filled with the mentally ill, and all he had to stare at were the blank, sterile walls all around him. By this point, he had already been working there for a few weeks and had more or less resigned himself to his mundane fate. He was mostly doing it because his overbearing mother had forced him into it, saying that the experience would help him get into college. He was already quite a good student, getting straight A’s and doing more than a handful of club activities during the school year, but that clearly wasn’t enough for his mother. If he had chosen to volunteer here on his own, he may have enjoyed it more, but as it was, he saw the place as more of a prison that an asylum. In certain ways, it definitely was a prison, to the patients at least. Very few if any at all were allowed out of the building, instead confined to their isolated rooms, doctor’s offices, or a few common rooms scattered about the facility.
As a completely rookie, inexperienced volunteer, he wouldn’t have been able to help the staff with very much, other than occasionally tidying up patient rooms, bringing them to and from their appointments, or at the very most serving them food and keeping them company as they sat silent in thought. During his short tenure so far, Steven hadn’t really noticed too many… for lack of a better word “weirdos” around. More or less, the place seemed to house and care for those with at best minor mental or psychological deficiencies. Of course there were the run of the mill patients who talked to themselves, those who heard voices or saw things, and yet others who merely had warped senses of reality. None of them, however, ever appeared dangerous to themselves or the staff, which he counted as a blessing. In fact, the few he did communicate with were quite friendly, and were it not for the fact that they were in a mental institution, he wouldn’t have known that there was anything wrong with any of them.
As is the case with any such facility, however, there’s always the one patient that everyone talked about. Steven had only ever heard of this “Anna” from overhearing conversations between nurses, doctors, and other staff members. He had yet to see her in person, but from what the other people were saying, he surmised that she was either incredibly shy or simply catatonic. He also heard from some of the other male staffers or volunteers that she was also apparently quite attractive, and that if she weren’t deemed crazy, they would have definitely… made advances towards her. Those conversations always made Steven feel a little sick inside; even though he didn’t exactly enjoy his time at the asylum since it prevented him from having fun with his friends, he nevertheless saw the act of caring for the people as a good thing, and that all of them, no matter the illness or differences, should have been treated with respect. The way those other staff members and volunteers talked about her, even though he had never met her, made him angry.
As a temporary summer volunteer, however, he kept his mouth shut, and as a temp, he was always shuffled around between various doctors and patients, being assigned to cases where they were short staffed for whatever reason. As he was pulling on his uniform, one of the nurses came in and told him that he had been assigned to care for Anna. Telling her that he would be right out, he proceeded to finish dressing. The uniform fit well over his fit body, though perhaps a bit loosely. Standing at 5’9”, his 145lbs frame was fit and toned, but not extravagantly muscular by any standard. His skin was fair, contrasting against his short, black hair and deep brown eyes. It was about lunchtime now, and so his first task would be to bring her food, and if need be, serve it to her. Walking out of the changing room, he went to the food cart, picking out a tray and carrying it down the hall. He took a peek at what was on the menu today, and saw that lunch consisted of simple spaghetti with meatballs, orange juice, and bowl of soup down the hall. He was careful as he walked with the tray towards Anna’s room, not wanting to spill anything on the white scrubs that every single other staff member wore at the asylum. When he arrived at a door, he took a peek inside the window and saw that she was sitting in a chair at her table, facing away from the door and towards the wall.
“Lunch,” he simply called out after knocking on the door. When he received no response from the girl within the room, he held the tray with one hand as he opened the door and stepped inside. Having been trained how to deal with patients, Steven carefully set the tray down in front Anna at the table where she was sitting, careful not to touch her or make sudden movements as such actions could cause adverse reactions from some of the other patients. “Anna, I’m Steven. I’ll be your…” he trailed off as he turned his head to look at her for the first time. What the other guys had been saying about her was right. She was an amazingly, stunningly beautiful woman. He couldn’t really tell how old she was, but he was certain that she was relatively young, but nevertheless older than him. HE couldn’t really tell how tall she was as she was sitting down, but he could surmise that she was probably a bit shorted than him at least. What he next noticed as his eyes dropped from her beautiful face to her ample chest was that she had rather large breasts, only barely concealed by the white shirt that all patients at the asylum wore. They almost appeared larger than they were on her slender body. His eyes shifted back to her face, her flowing blonde hair and sharp blue eyes literally sucked the breath out of him, and he could only manage to stare at her for what was probably a few moments too long. After all, he was just a simple teenage boy, and any man, regardless of age, would have found Anna to be extremely beautiful. After a little while, he came back to his senses, blinking his eyes and clearing his throat. “… I’ll be your attendant today. Do you think you can manage to eat on your own, or would you like me to feet you?” he asked with a soft voice, partly because of his training in addressing patients, and partly because he was still genuinely still in awe at the beautiful woman currently sitting in front of him.
