Alex’s hands fidgeted with the tie as he slid the knot up with a grimace as he felt the unaccustomed tightness around his neck. It was rare that he ever wore anything other than jeans and a T-shirt, but today was a one of those occasions that called for something a little more formal. He was celebrating a birthday in fact, his Mothers.
His hands fell to his side as he gazed at the reflection in the mirror; his blonde hair fell just shy of his shoulders and the fringe hung low partly concealing his clear blue eyes. People said he resembled his Father, But he had no idea about that. He could barely remember the man; it had been almost thirteen years since he walked out the door and out of his life. That was why tonight was so special; his mother had raised him by herself, sacrificed a lot so he had everything he needed.
Truth be told Alex had been the man of the house for a number of years, But only now that he had finally turned eighteen did he actually feel like it. It was now his turn to take care of his mother, and it all started tonight. He had spent months planning and saving so he could surprise her with a night out, Even now as she prepared to go out she had no idea where they were going. With a final glance in the mirror he straightened his tie and slid the jacket of his suit over his shoulders before slipping out of his room.
Making his way down stairs he waited for his mother to join him, he could feel himself getting more and more nervous as he paced back and forth across the living room floor. It was worse than prom night; he could feel his heart pounding in his chest with each passing second.
