Abe Wagner was 49 years old and stood at 5 feet, 10 inches tall. He wore black glasses which complimented his salt-and-pepper black and grey hair. He had deep brown eyes and was of average build. He worked hard to stay healthy and while he was not muscular, nor did he carry around a beer belly.
He was somewhat frustrated. It had not been a good few years. First, his company had massive financial problems. He had to let a lot of good people go but, since he was an executive, his job was secure. His bonus checks, however, were not. His quarterly bonus started dwindling and then just stopped indefinitely. The CEO explained that the bonus checks would probably be halted for at least 3 years or so and was an act of desperation to keep the company afloat. He told his wife that he was lucky to still have a high-paying job and that a lot of people were out of work. She didn't seem to agree and missed the extra luxuries that his bonus checks would bring her...jewelry, trips, and so on. It was not long before she filed for divorce.
For the past year, Abe had been living in an apartment downtown near his office. He rarely got to see his 17 year-old daughter, Karen. Growing up, she was his special princess and he always spoiled her the best that he could. Now, he was lucky to be able to drive to the suburbs once a week to take her to a dull franchise restaurant. These dinners were usually rushed as she was always coming from practice for school stuff or extracurricular activities and then was antsy to meet up with friends afterwards. He felt that his little angel was slipping away from him and in a year, might be off at some college somewhere.
Thus, he was thrilled when his ex-wife agreed to let him take Karen somewhere at the beginning of the summer. The luxuries were still hard to afford, so a beach trip or shopping in New York were out of the question, but he still had the house on the lake they had gone to every summer (and some Christmases) for the past decade. He thought it would be nice to spend some quality time with Karen, away from the distractions of life and away from his ex-wife.
Then, Karen had asked..practically begged for permission to bring her best friend Adella along for the trip. His heart was broken as his dreams for quality time melted away. Karen bringing a friend probably would mean that Karen and her friend would giggle and do things off by themselves while he was stuck alone. But, she was daddy's girl and Abe was never able to tell her "no." He figured that at least he would have his daughter around for breakfast and dinners, even if she did have a friend with her. He had known Adella for some years now, so he at least knew that she wasn't a pain.
He loaded up his SUV with his suitcase, groceries, and an old TV that he planned to install at the lakehouse to replace the even older non-widescreen one they had there now. He drove up the highway to the suburbs, pulled up to the two story house that was no longer his home and rang the doorbell.
