It had been a bad morning for Private Roger Hacket of the 5th Cavalry Division of the Army of the Republic. The boys in blue had just been handed their hats by the crack troops of the Army of Norther Virginia under Robert E. Lee. Roger was the victim of a mini-ball in his thigh, and fearing he might lose his leg, he had cut it out himself with his bayonet. The 6'2 200 lb soldier was all muscle and his blue eyes matched his uniform, and on this day that bought him a trip south in irons with 100 other prisoners. Being wounded he was taken to an aid station manned by volunteer nurses. They were the angels of the battlefield revered by soldiers on both sides for their kind treatment of the wounded.
