The life of a half elf in a human city wasn't easy. In general, the "knife ears" as they were called were looked down upon and could only get jobs as common works and servants. That is not to say that all half elves lived in poverty, some saw being in societies shadow as an opportunity, and rose as slumlords and crime bosses. These individuals, and there lackeys, lived lives filled with all the good things money could buy.
Rui was once such half elf, a thief working for one of the crime bosses. He was fairly low in the pecking order, but he was working on a job that would launch him into the big leagues. There was this house, the master of it was some kind of rich nobleman, and he was going to be gone for a whole week. It was the perfect chance to sneak in, take as much loot as he could, and sneak out. With a haul that big, he was sure to move up in the world
The night the master of the house left, Rui sneaks into the manor. With the owner gone and it being this late at night, the house should be empty. No servants who stayed behind to clean would stay this late. Not even trying to be sneaky the thief moves around the house, grabbing anything that is not nailed down.
